Did a lower body workout a couple days ago, but there was nothing worth logging. It is what it is.

4/20/19

-Press
135x4x5

-This is without a doubt the lift that has been negatively impacted the most by my losing weight and not lifting as much, to no surprise. Coincidentally, I don't enjoy doing this lift very much anymore, and am sympathetic to any rationale for doing it as little as possible.

Sitting back supported dumbbell press

65s x 8
70s x 2 x 7

Shrugs

Shoulder lift machine

Sad to see this S&F Stalwart no longer being able to press bodyweight.

My bodyweight is a lot lower. It is quite possible if I prioritized it I could press 170 pounds.

I just did a quick estimation with an online 531 calculator (which have proven accurate for me in the past) at 135x6 (which I am very confident I could do) and this is almost a BW press.

At some point I did a leg workout not worth logging.

Moving on, I have this health issue I am not sure what to do with. A few weeks ago I probably overdid it with the pull-ups and I developed some serious tendinitis/swelling in my left elbow area immediately following a pull-up workout. As a side effect I also had some tingling going down into my pinkie, indicating some ulnar nerve impingement is going on.

Anyways, my strategy had been to pretty much ignore the issue and hope it goes away, but it hasn’t. I can still power through the discomfort and do my normal routine, but I pretty much have some level of elbow discomfort/ pinkie tingling most of the time, which gets worse with certain lifts, and is disconcerting and not ideal.

I will probably continue to do ignore the issue and monitor is the situation.

Maybe you could go lighter on the lifts where it hurts - or do a slightly different lift for those - until it doesn't hurt and then ramp back up.

Yeah just find some pulling exercises that the joint can better tolerate and do those. Lat pull down, neutral grip or supine grip, etc.

Workout 4/24/19

-Following Yugo and Renton suggestions I did the first pulp set neutral grip. This actually hurt my elbow area much more than normal pull-ups do. Oh well, we tried. I switched back to normal for the 2nd set and it actually wasn't too bad today, for whatever reason.

Pullups
7x10, 4x8
102 total

-I think I might try to figure out a way to get a belt and hang weights and throw in some weighted pull-ups. I have tried the holding a dumb-bell in between your legs method before, and I just didn't like it at all.

Machine pulling stuff

Curl stuff

-My top set was alternating standing dumbbell curls, 45sx6. Before I started all the pull-ups I probably would have had a hard time doing 40sx6 weighing 20 pounds heavier. My arms don't actually look any bigger, and this hasn't transferred over to any other lifts that I can tell, so not sure how useful this is, but is an interesting aside nonetheless.

-Afterwards I took my son to the YMCA and played some basketball with him. He is obsessed with Steph Curry and all he wants to do is jack 3's, despite the fact he can barely shoot far enough and his make % is < 10 %. All else being equal, I feel at this point like he would be better served doing layups, but the way basketball is going, maybe not. Maybe 7 year olds should be spending their time practicing jacking up 3's.

You can also try different pulling stuff for a while or assisted pulling (bands or something) at a weight where it doesn't hurt.

Re: shooting 3s. The bigger issue for a 7 year old is that their mechanics will have to change for shooting 3s anyway so shooting a bunch now with (I assume) improper mechanics will make it very difficult to learn proper ones later. So they will have a slight (or large) disadvantage since they will forever shoot 3s inefficiently.

I'm just impressed a seven year old is shooting 3s on (presumably) a regulation height basket - mine play in a league with 8 foot rims (first and second graders) and no one is really capable of bombing away from distance yet even given that.

He has a pretty solid chucking motion. But Yugo is correct it in no way resembles a legitimate shooting motion, and theoretically he would be much better off waiting.

This is of course mitigated by the fact due to picking non athletic, non tall parents he isn’t jeapordizing any athletic future, so I am inclined just to let him do what he wants and have fun.

Also, he is in a league that plays on the shorter courts, but when he is playing with me he is playing on 10 feet, because I am not going to play with short rims, so he is just going to have to go back and forth with rim heights for a couple years and cope with it.

And no, I can’t dunk on 8 foot rims and it is so obvious I have no chance I havent even bothered to try.

Definitely impressed that son of Kelhus can hit 10% of 3s at that age. I'm impressed he can even chuck it that far.

Serious question: I remember back in the day you used to lament the fact that you didn't think your son would be into sports at all. Now he seems like a fairly typical sports-loving kid (or perhaps moreso). So, how did it happen?

I had no idea. Pretty impressive. As I'm sure you realize, I was referring to the new Politics and Society subforum here. He's already racking up the posts there.

f'kin lol. Sounds like there's great discussion to be had with some of modernity's most cutting edge and innovative thinkers.

Thought you may appreciate all of this guy's content. Social Psychology researcher who expatted to Finland to do heretical (literally) research on things like race, intelligence, personality traits heritability etc.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR...eQeBxTw/videos

The ones with the bearded guy wearing glasses are more technical. The ones by himself are more colloquial.

Thanks, it is definitely something I will put on the Youtube/Podcast rotation, although it is likely I won't provacotively comment on it here, as I am trying to avoid being too provocative right now.

Lament might be a strong word. I don't remember the post in question, but it may have been tongue in cheek.

Anyways, to answer your question how did it happen, the answer is probably "The Patriarchy." I am kidding, but not really. For good or bad, I am a few beers in and just finished posting in Politics, so I am feeling very abstract and philosophical right now.

Like most (but not all) kids he is fairly sensitive to mainstream gender norms, and seeks peer acceptance by emulating them. So basically, he is a typical socialized hairless ape.

I guess the goal moving forward is to try to impart it is ok to be different and to respect everyone regardless of their differences. Although my understanding is that moving forward the lions share of socialization is going to be done through peer interactions, so I guess the hope should be he makes good friends.

Anyways, here is a video of the 3 point chuck, with a rare make. Needless to say, this was not the first attempt to document this shot, and also needless to say he was over the line.

I guess lament wasn't quite right, it was mostly just an observation you made. Didn't sound tongue in cheek, IIRC. It was probably more than 2 yrs ago.

Weighed in after gym today and was 173. Not too alarming, but something to monitor. I have been on a Firestone 805 kick as of late, having 1-3 pretty much every evening, so probably shouldn’t be too shocking a result. Could also just be variance. Time will tell.
