Good Luck Today!
Thanks man!
My day didnt go as well as I had hoped, but I got a gold medal for my age/weight class and went 5/9 with 683/507/650.
I got light headed on my last squat warmup. I got scared and didnt want a repeat of my last meet (bombing out of nationals on squats due to getting light headed), so I dropped my opener to 617. I smoked that, then went up to 683 (half way to 750) and got that with no trouble. It didnt feel super easy, so I decided to attempt 711 on my 3rd which would have been a small PR. I got down to the hole fine, but I shot forward with it on the way up.
Bench was not a total disaster, but it was close. I missed my opener of 507. I havent missed a weight that light since I can remember. I was wiggling my right elbow on the way up and the weight went down and up, so the head judge said take it. I smoked the 2nd attempt at 507. 3rd attempt I tried 573 in my SDP. I had not missed a weight that light in this shirt before. Well, I wiggled my right elbow again like the first attempt, so I missed this too.
DLs went about as expected. Smoked 606 opener. I got 650 on the 2nd attempt, but it was harder than it should have been because I got a little forward. 3rd attempt I tried 661 and barely moved it before my back told me it was time to let go. I might have gotten 661 or better on the 3rd attempt if I had not used up so much energy on the 2nd one.
My teammates did great.
SHW open gal won her weight class and set a couple WRs Thurs.
Wife won her age/weight class and set a new DL PR with a super hard grinder. She is so fun to watch.
SHW 51 year old teammate won his age/weight class. He squatted mid 800s and took 903 for a ride. He smoked it, but got two reds for depth. They said he was a half inch high. It looked good to me. I think he got robbed.
220 open guy took 2nd in a very tough 220 field. He squatted 882 and totaled something like 2007 for PRs.
The WPO on Sunday was epic. Cash prizes for 1st - 3rd in each weight class were $2000/$1000/$500 and best lifter over all was $2000.
Dave Hoff totaled 2915 @ ~296 including a 1232 squat. He won best lifter, but not by a lot.
My female 148 teammate went something like 480/275/418 (all meet PRs). She probably finished in the middle of the pack (they only announced top 3 in light and heavy for women and light middle and heavy for men).
My 220 lb coach squatted 975, going 2/3. He got his opener bench, an easy 705 in his old single ply shirt. He put on his two ply and got 771, but they gave him two reds for going down and up. Videos clearly showed the bar did not go down and up at any point. This sucks. He missed his 3rd attempt because he was out of gas from the 2nd. He also hurt his back badly. He dropped his DL opener to 551 and smoked that, but hurt his back worse because he rounded it setting the weight down. He tried 600 twice, but hurt his back worse on each try. We had to help him get to the floor so he could get into the McKenzie 1 position. That helped a little, then my chiro teammate did some work on him for a while. He'll be ok, but I think he will be in some pain for a couple weeks.
Matt Minuth put on the best show I've ever seen. @242, he squatted 1102 & benched 925. Then he took a "light" DL opener to try to secure the best total of all time at 242. Only he tore his left bicep on his opener and dropped it. I figured he was done. Nope. He wrapped up his bad arm, took his 2nd attempt and turned his other hand forward, which looked uncomfortable as hell. He got the weight to the top and dropped it. He still wasnt finished. He took his 3rd attempt and got it. Awesome! Best 242 total ever. For now.
Chris DellaFave was close behind him. He pulled something over 800 on his 2nd attempt and would have been in the lead for the middle weight division if Minuth had not got his 3rd attempt. He needed to pull 914 on his last attempt to beat Minuth and break Minuth's minutes old all-time 242 record total. He got it about 6" off the ground, but no more. That was fun to see. DellaFave ended up with the 3rd best total of all time at 242.
Brian Carroll, the guy who previously held the all time total record at 242, was also in the meet. He squatted something around 1050. He missed his opener bench. For his 2nd attempt, it should have been good, but his handler got in the side judge's way and wouldnt move, despite the side judge trying to physically get him to move during the attempt. Then after the lift was over, he started yelling at the side judge. What a moron. They kicked the handler out of the meet and red lighted Brian's lift. Brian hurt his shoulder on the lift and pulled out. That was a bummer.
I have been reading the book, "The Gift of Injury", written by Stu McGill and Brian Carroll. My wife brought it with to the meet. I asked Brian to sign it for me. He took the time to start talking to me about myself and wrote some nice stuff in it above his signature. We talked for about 5-10 minutes. Super nice guy.
I saw a bunch of 1100 lb + squats, 900 lb + benches and 800 lb + pulls.
The women were damn impressive too. A 132 lb gal squatted 617 with probably the best squat form I've ever seen. Her DL and bench form were pretty much perfect too. A 165 lb gal squatted 683. A 198 lb gal (Crystal Tate) squatted 755 and pulled 661. Crystal won best female lifter.
Another gal tore her ACL on her 2nd or 3rd squat. I heard she went to the hospital, then came back to bench. Her bad knee was all wrapped up. She got her 1st and 2nd bench attempts using one leg. On her 3rd, the weight went up towards her head too fast and she broke her arm. Awful.
Cliffs: I went 683/507/650 and a gold medal at WPC worlds. Not what I was hoping for, but not the worst meet ever.
I'll post some videos when I have more time.
