I don't know what's going on over there but it doesn't seem #1.
Well not Indians specifically. Apparently they are sending out vaccine to a lot of the poor South Pacific countries that are near by, so that is one factor in making it less fast than it could be.
USA#1 definitely has an edge on the vaccine because it controls a lot of vaccine production. Other than UK and Israel, I can't think of any countries that are even close in how quick they're getting people vaccinated. Even Canada is pretty damn slow.
A country like NZ can afford to be a little more deliberate in their vaccine program. If you wanted to be ahead on the vaccine rollout the you had to have acted before the vaccines were developed and pre-ordered a ****ton of all of them because you didn't know which ones would pan out. And you had to be real early in the pre-ordering, because some countries who pre-ordered aren't getting their orders fully filled on time. Ordering now doesn't help at all, no matter how much cash you're willing to throw around.
USA #1 did a ton of pre-ordering. That's part of the reason why we have a shitload of AZ vaccine stockpiled that isn't even approved in the US and we're sending it to Canada so it doesn't just expire. I guess NZ didn't see the need to light their money on fire like this.
Sure, if they wanted they could probably get some shitty Sinovac or something else and shave a couple of months off of getting everyone vaxxed. But just being patient and getting some primo Pfizer (or whatever) into every New Zealander is a fine strategy since they're completely open for business anyway with no community spread.
Another benefit is that by being slower they have the advantage of seeing how these vaccines have performed in hundreds of millions of people before deciding how to proceed themselves. That's a benefit that is often forgotten because most of the vaccines happened to be extremely successful, but if they weren't, then having access to this data before deciding which vaccines to procure would have been huge.
They're not going to be quarantined "forever". They'll probably get everyone vaxxed within the next several months.
So if your choice is being NZ with almost no COVID deaths, minimal lockdowns, and probably 6 months (at most) behind on vaccine available for everyone (compared to US) versus the cluster**** we had here but sooner vaccine availability, it's pretty clear which of those situations is really #1.
If you want to pick on someone, pick on Japan. They're taking their sweet ass time (less than 5% of Japan vaxxed when I checked last week) and still planning on having the Olympics there in a couple of months with people coming from all over the world and no requirement that athletes be vaccinated. That is true idiocy.
