I agree Rip is too reactionary in general but I took that as mockery of a bad question rather than of foam rolling.

Why was it a bad question? I think Rip was pouncing on the 'tissue quality' comment but thats what nearly everyone says.

Doesn't improving "tissue quality" imply some kind of biochemical alteration? Seems like the wrong choice of words to me.

Whether it's worth jumping on him rather than interpreting the question charitably and giving a useful answer is another matter, but the response seemed to be to be within Rip's normal level of cantankerousness.

The foam roller and any other technique that you do yourself will probably not work, because the intensity of an effective ITB release causes so much pain that you can't do it to yourself. And you can't apply enough force in the right direction if you wanted to.

It has been my experience that foam rolling doesn't work, because you can't hurt yourself nearly as badly as someone else can hurt you. Any of you guys that have had a crazy girlfriend will attest to this.

Trade the foam roller for a piece of 3" PVC, if you insist on doing this to yourself. The foam is in fact too friendly.

Here's what I think off the top of my head
1. rugby
2. american football
3. basketball
4. hockey
5. football
6. baseball
I would say

1) Football
2) Rugby
3) Hockey
4) Basket
5) Soccer
6) Baseball

Dhani Jones had a show on travel channel where he traveled the globe playing various sports and went to England to play rugby. To me he seemed bigger and stronger than most of the rugby guys but just didn't have the stamina to play a full game. I don't think the fight would last long enough for that to come into play.

I would also take hockey players above basket players just becasue they already fight all the time and most basketball guys are pretty thin and if you just attack their legs they have no shot. Sure LeBron would kick someone's ass, but Bron is a total freak of nature.

Perhaps I'm overvaluing the toughness factor that comes along with rugby experience. I suppose since so much endurance is involved in rugby they're more like a hybrid of football and soccer players.

I could be overvaluing the shear size of NFL guys given the terms of the fight. Given that it is taking place on an open field, the rugby players could use strategy to separate the smaller guys from the linemen at which point they could beat down those guys with numbers and then focus on taking down the big guys.

[dork]I sound like I'm talking about how to pull mobs in an MMO or something (Well I guess it is pretty much the same principle)[/dork]

Quick form check guys. My buddy started lifting and here's a video of his clean and press. Is his double knee bend timed well? And is he pulling with his arms?

He is both pulling and pressing much harder with his right arm than his left.

Heh, 0:47 when he does the backflip off the swing brings back some memories of when we used to do that as kids. Backflips, backflip 360s/540s, 720s, 900s, great fun. Hours and hours spent after school on the playground messing about. It's not actually that hard once you get the hang of it.

trying to figure out which group of athletes from differing major sports would win in a fight isn't much different than trying to guess which ones would be the best typists. fighting is a skill, it isn't directly correlated to strength and athletic ability. abstract things like "toughness" fall by the wayside in the face of skill. if you think that because you squat or deadlift X amount of weight that you are somehow now a hardass, well, lol.

i would love to see someone with similar stats and lifts, but with no fighting background try to get on the mat, ring, or octagon with me, it would be quite the good time. there are also people 50 pounds lighter that you couldn't pay me to spar with for 30 seconds.

I just brought it up for a fun discussion. I like speculating about stuff like that. It's kinda like that game "would you rather..."

I assumed you were being totally serious and wanted a rigorous scientific debate on the matter.

I interpret that sarcasm as being directed at KPC's post rather than mine. Get him KPC!!!

A team of 15 rugby players from anywhere in the world selected based on their "scariness" would make me poop my pants...

NZ would have a strong representation imo. :P

Actually... the team would probably be maybe a couple of guys from england/wales (and i guess chabal from france) and the rest would be pacific islanders.... maybe one or two south africans to take care of the eye gouging and general dirty work.

tbh I dont know if any aussies would get a start...
