Someone once said that you were losing your grip on sanity. I think that statement would be revised at this point.

Here is a link to a medical journal review documenting the strong epidemiological link between obesity and poor health.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1...&ordinalpos=14

I am not sure if you can view the entire article without a subscription or not. If that is the case and anyone is super-interested I can send you the PDF.

Enjoy

Re: **8*8*8 March version Two(2) ***88***8

so someone finally got around to making a thread about zach on lyle's forums.

http://forums.lylemcdonald.com/showthread.php?t=6654

people talking about his even fat distribution making it hard to eyeball his %. my 25-28% range may have been on the high end, but not very high and likely more accurate than the 21% measure. anyway, i think this guy is a good example of why not to just pound food right away. training is not a sprint, and neither should weight gain be imo.

I know most of the points I make are obvious. However, I feel it is points that sometimes get lost by many posters (and probably also lurkers) in this forum in a mad frenzy to get huuugggeee and strong. I know that yourself, Soulman, and many other posters in this forum have recently put on a lot of weight with the logic that you can easily cut all the fat and be better off for the effort. Time will tell whether this works out or not.

I have a feeling that in the coming years there will be a number of posters (and lurkers) on this forum who will look back and wished they hadn't done GOMAD (or equivalent weight gain strategy) to prolong linear novice gains.

What do you mean time will tell whether this works or not? Do you think I'm stuck at my current weight (which hasn't changed in 9 months, by the way) and totally screwed? The laws of thermodynamics no longer apply to me?

Re: **8*8*8 March version Two(2) ***88***8

after looking at that zach dude some more, and then looking at myself i realize its really hard to tell. i def have a bigger gut than him but i have nice shoulder/trap/back definition. so ya, his fat is pretty even which makes it hard to tell if how much muscle he has underneath. my fat is pretty concentraded on my lower belly, so much that if flex i can actually see upper ab muscles.

eta, im assuming he wasnt flexing or anything in those pics?

Re: **8*8*8 March version Two(2) ***88***8

offtopic from current bickering but...

I've been doing SS for about a month and a half now. I feel like my legs and torso are getting bigger, and i've gained weight and strength, but I really feel like my arms don't look much bigger. Would it be counterproductive to throw in a few bicep/tricep exercises for purely cosmetic reasons?

Also, I havn't made myself learn cleans yet, probably should but I haven't. Instead I've been doing pullups instead, or doing deadlifts again even if I did them the previous workout (alternating between xtra day of deadlifts and pullups instead.) Is this terrible? Can't be too bad right?

yeah he's not flexing. i don't think he'd have much definition if he were to flex though, anyway. also agree it's hard to tell. the visible fat around his chest and armpit areas seems to contradict the amount of fat around his stomach, but then it looks like he has massive fat lumps hanging off his hips.

Why do you think you eyeballing him is more accurate than calipers? Or else you think Rip is lying? You can't think you are more accurate just looking and thast he's telling the truth....

Yeah, usually 4 sets of what I call "pullups" two sets of overhand, two sets of opposite/underhand/whatever you wanna call it.

Last edited by slownpainful; 03-03-2010 at 07:32 PM. Reason: basically 2 sets of pullups 2 sets of chinups

There are hundreds of millions of Americans who are currently overweight to the point where it is negatively affecting "health" and they would be much better off if they lost the weight. I am sure when they first started gaining weight most of these people told themselves they could (and would) lose it all when the time was right.

Is SS along with caloric overconsumption probably a very effective means of gaining strength and LBM for a novice weightlifer? Yes

Are there costs to such a program? Yes

Considering most of us have H&F goals other than gaining as much strength as possible in as short a time-fram as possible, might a different programming approach be a better choice? I do not know, but I think it is worth discussing.

Calipers measure fat distribution at three specific sites, obv if you carry more or less fat there than compared to the normal person... they will be off. Its rare for someone to be so smooth.
