Basically followed the race plan I’d laid out yesterday. Detail in the photo but after 10 quick strokes I settled into a rhythm and went through the first half of the race in 1.52.8/500 average and then slowly turned the screw between 2500 and 4000 before ramping it up more. The last 500 was just under 1.47
Potentially not the most efficient way to row this distance, needing such a marked acceleration in the final 1k, but definitely less traumatic than going on goal pace the entire time.
In the final 300 when I knew I had the PR locked up, I was telling myself that I would ‘retire’ this distance and concentrate on the shorter distances but I think it’s inevitable I do it again in the jest few months. If/when I do, I’ll pace it 0.5 secs/500 faster in the first half and then attempt to ramp up the finishing pace a little earlier and I think I could probably get closer to 18.30....particularly if I commit to more distance work moving forward
Looking at my times logged on the C2 website, even this new time is a relatively weaker time vs my peers, compared to the 1k and 2k. I’m approx 90th percentile for 1k and 2k but approx 84th percentile in 5k. These will
Improve as I move into the 50-59 group in a few months time but the 5k is relatively weaker still.
Not sure if this is because they’re more popular distances, an indication that I’m not doing the distance work or purely a reflection of my relative athletic ability at short vs medium distance
