I've relegated boxing to the rugby off-season. I tried a few seasons back to do both concurrently, and it was way too much. Current season runs until the end of August. Then I'll probably take a few weeks off, then I'll probably get back into boxing in September.

Can you describe how a boxing class or whatever you call it would go? I was thinking about doing boxing at my jiu jitsu gym but it looks more like a fitness class than actual boxing. To me it looks like they will do like jump rope or running for the first 15 minutes, then work on a combo with a partner super slow for like 15 minutes, then try the combo a little faster for 15 minutes then super light sparring at like 15% effort it looked like to me for the last 15 minutes.

It seemed like a super waste of time to me but i've never seen a boxing class before so i dont have any idea what i'm looking at.

I would say our beginner classes are along those lines. If you've never done any boxing before, those ind of partner drills are pretty good for learning technique, positions, etc.. Even for just getting used to punches coming at your face.

On the other hand (and I don't know what it's like in your gym obv), our beginner classes have a massive range of skill and fitness level. And generally the better\fitter people will gravitate towards each other when we're doing partner work and moderate their intensity accordingly.

Obviously I'm going to say that if you're at all interested, just give it a shot. If it's already included in your gym membership, you might as well.

In my gym (and from what I've read around the place, this is fairly common), it basically follows the classic line of do the beginner classes for a while, if you stick at that and halfway reasonable coach will be like "ok, now try this", after a while of that they'll say "wanna try light sparring", etc. and it just naturally progresses. At some point you'll hopefully gel with a crew around your level and have plenty of opportunities for sparring\higher level training from there.

And the flipside being if you don't have any aspirations for sparring, fighting, etc. just doing a 60 minute boxing class a few times a week is probably pretty good for burning calories.

Forgot to log a couple of sessions... shockingly there was nothing of note. Some 160kg deads. Some 60kg presses. Some 100kg benches. Some 100kg squats. Chinups, pullups, dips. I've also been in an on running battle with a cold for the last couple of weeks.

Today...

squat: 3x5x100
press: 4x4x60
bb row, facepull, reverse bb curl

Weasel thinking of boxing too? Maybe we could extend this situation another 8 to 10 times and get a rotating cast of H&Fers down to Brazil for Diggstown 2: Proto-Ant Mestizo. Then all the posters that loco keeps saying he'll beat the **** out of because of his superior heart and desire will conveniently be in one place!

Thanks for the reply. That was very informative

Monte,
Ya I'm thinking of boxing but it would replace two sessions of bjj so I'm not sure. It looks a little boring to me. And diggstown is such an underrated movie. It is so good

Injury update!

Fractured left scapular. Pretty interesting one. Sort of vertical direction with a dog leg from the coracoid process down to the lateral border. Both docs said "huh, that's weird".

Heavy contact in a tackle. Other guy also went off with what looked like a lower arm injury. So I think I probably made contact on his forearm and\or hip.

Thought it may have just been a stinger, but five minutes later, I still couldn't lift my arm, so went off.

Still hurting the next day. Xray confirmed fracture. Also got an mri to check for other damage, but havent got the results yet (lol public holiday). Pobably doesn't matter, because it's just going to be imobilized for the next number of weeks anyway.

That was the penultimate game of the season. Seems reasonably likely it will be my last. gg rugby.

Side note: Is it possible to be a non-responder to normal doses of pain killers? The first few days I was taking in the rage of 250mg codeine per day. Didn't seem to do much. Last few days I've beeb taking ~40mg oxycodone per day and it doesn't see, to do much...

Snitch,

Yikes, that sucks; feel better, man. It's a good thing you've been practicing barely lifting over the past few years, so your body should already be adapted to the level of sloth you're going to be exposing it to over the next month or so.

And yes, certain people are low or non-responders to opioids; discovering that you're a bogan that can't even get ****ed up on hillbilly heroin has to be a pretty big blow. I'm sorry for your loss.

Bonus info: Utrasound also showed an existing supraspinatus tear.

Can't say I've really noticed anything going on on that side. So hooray for non symptomatic muscle tears?

Cheers, bros.

Follow up xray today + consult with specialist. Confirmed no displacement and no ruptures, so no surgery required.

Emphasized caution over the coming weeks because if it does become displaced, the surgery to repair is significant.

Probably looking at six weeks of immobilization.

Good news! I almost wrist curled a 2kg dumbbell yesterday!

Sling is off. Rehab beginning. Will make a return to the gym next week for all many of light lower body machine exercises! Can't wait!

Remember 5 years ago you were complaining about elbow pain from pullups/chinups? Did you find a way to fix it?
