For those who might be interested, the bourbon exchange Facebook group got shut down today. Guess the bottom is falling out of the secondary bourbon market.

and tried it again.
still a bit harsh and not balanced.
talisker 10 is much better in my eyes.

I agree on the Storm review, normally I love Talisker, it's what I go for when I am in less of a peaty and more of a sea salty mood. An old flat mate got me a bottle for my 30th and it's only had one dram out of it in 5 months. There is something about it, it's a little more muddy/mulchy than I like, and there almost a burned taste rather than smoky to it. I will keep working on it - next week is St. Andrew's Day, after all, so a whisky is in order - but I don't think it'll win the day.

The Glenfiddich 14y

Nose: Toasted Oak, Sweet Toffee, Sherbet Apples & Pears, vanilla, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Pepper, Coriander, Bourbon.

Palate: Sweet Toffee, Wood, Spices, Rich Vanilla, Dry Fruit, Bourbon
The finish is medium in length, Dry, Oak vanilla & Spices up to the end

Loads of Wood Spice & Vanilla uncomplicated but a nice dram non the less I think the 15 solera is the better option at nearly the same price.

So this year I decided not to put much/any effort into finding van winkle. Lo and behold, a store I frequent saved me a bottle of 20, so that's nice. I guess the multiple thousands of dollars I've spent on whiskey with them this year qualified me to buy an only slightly marked up bottle of pappy

On a somewhat interesting related note. Store manager told me they only received 5 bottles total across the van winkle vertical (which I believe to be at least close to correct). They could have gotten multiple cases if they bought a ton of crappy flavored vodka from their distributor. Interesting move by the distributor I guess, but seems like no store owner would buy a bunch of stock that would sit around forever just to get more van winkle unless they were going to price gouge on the pappy. So consumer loses in the end

I tried High West Whisky today. I said "the one with scotch in it" since I didn't wanna pull out my phone and look up this thread just to figure it out lol. It was really good, and even at $13.00 a glass I can't really complain about the price (maybe I should, though).

After that I went to another lounge/bar type thing and tried Black Label. It was ok, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be though (maybe due to me having HWW earlier). The only reason I got it was because my friends wanted to take shots with me, and I imagined JW to be the most tolerable for female palates that aren't too fond of whisky in general. No, we didn't shoot it (luckily) since we were given a pretty healthy portion. I guess that's the tendency when you order something neat from a bartender

Had been finishing off the end of a few bottles to make room for some Christmas spending. Recently killed:
Aberlour A'bunadh
Balvenie 12 Signature
Bruichladdich - Laddie Ten
Glendronach 15 Revival
Glendronach 21 Parliament
Glenlivet Archive 21
Old Pulteney 12
Springbank 18
Would buy any one of those again, especially the A'bunadh, Laddie Ten and Old Pulteney -- excellent value.

Couple days ago I added:
Glenlivet Nadurra 16
Macallan Gold, Amber and Sienna
Tried the Macallan's right away, was underwhelmed and somewhat scared that the age statement line was no longer.

The next day I searched for any remaining stock of Macallan 12 and came up empty, so added:
Macallan 18 x 3
Macallan Cask Strength
Macallan Fine Oak 15
Glendronach Parliament 21
Glenfarclas 25

That trip clued me into a 10% discount (which means that I am only spending three times the rest of the world outside of Canada rather than the regular four times factor) deal going on this weekend so went back today and added:
anCnoc 12
Ardbeg 10
Auchentoshan 21
Glendronach 15 Revival
Glenfarclas 105
Glenfarclas 15
Oban Distillers Edition
Another bottle of Macallan Fine Oak 15
Highland Park 25 (in honor of ElD)

Looking forward to all of these, the HP25 most of all.

Floppy,

Wow! And that HP 25 is amazing. It's very expensive here, so must be totally absurd in Canada. Enjoy!

Got my bottle of Whistlepig yesterday and just now I'm tasting it. Very good as I remember from the time I had it at a bar.

The nose is slightly sweet. I always get a sense that ryes/bourbons have a "woody" nose that that Scotches do not. This one still has that woody nose but it is not overpowering. It feels sweet at first taste, and then the spicy flavor kicks in. It is remarkably smooth for being bottled in bond.

For comparison I poured myself a bit of Buffalo Trace rye, which is roughly half the price of the Whistlepig. The nose in the BT is noticeably more tarry and not as pleasantly sweet. Also bottled in bond the BT has more burn and the taste is not mildy sweet as the WP is.

Overall I think for the price point the WP definitely delivers. If you're a rye fan get your hands on a bottle.

great collection, but why did u pick up those 3?
for the price of the macallans u would have got a glendronach 18 and a glenfarclas 21.
by far better values in my eyes.
and i would have picked up glen grant 10 instead a anCnoc.
but otherwise super yummy lineup!

The 10% discount plus a $100 gift card kept the total under $3K. Probably more than the value of my car and almost 1,500 buy-ins at my current play money stakes. (lol bankroll (and car) nit ITT)

ElD - The HP 25 is pretty damned good. Probably a sliver behind Balvenie Portwood 21 for me, but very close. $315 even knocking 10% off here, ouch.

ElT- No pics, but this will give a rough idea >WhiskyBase alternative to real whiskey porn clicky<

manndl - I have never tried anCnoc before so wanted to give it a try. I will buy anything I have not tried before or anything I have and enjoyed. I hadn't tried those specific Macallan's yet either, was curious and failed to do any research at all before grabbing them. I have enjoyed every other Macallan I have tried (limited to 12, 18, Fine Oak 15 and Cask Strength) but was underwhelmed by these. I think I prefer the Gold to the Amber though. The Sienna was much better than either of the other two. I have yet to try a Glen Grant OB as well so will be on the look out. No Glendronach 18 or Glenfarclas 21 around here right now but based on the others I have tried in their line-ups I would buy either in a heartbeat. Canada being Canada though there is no way I could get the 18 and 21 for anywhere near the price of the Macallan's combined. That Glenfarclas alone would be $130 here and the Mac's totalled $165, but your point still stands.

Quick question, I am a relatively newb when it comes to whiskey have just started enjoying it in the last 1 and 1/2 years, took some whiskey tasting classes earlier on in the year.

Anyway I bought a bottle of Macallan 12 Fine Oak and noticed there were a few particles floating around in it, I sort of remember this being mentioned in the whiskey class and IIRC it is due to chill filtering, or in this case non-chill filtering, is this correct? Because I sort of remember chill filtered just being 'non' cloudy, if that makes sense, so maybe the particles are from the cork or something, not sure. Either way I'm going to drink it but just thought I'd ask out of interest.

should be drinkable without a doubt, but the 12 year fine oak should be chilled filtered.
usally non chill filtered whisky have atleast 45,8%.

went to a whisky tasting held in a store yesterday with two buddies.

the store it was held in had a selection of five arranged: the arran 14, highland park 12, talisker 10, ledaig gordon & macphail reserve mull, caol ila 12.

the guy said in hindsight said he should have switched the order of the ledaig and the caol ila as the former was cask strength. most agreed. it was quite an interesting one and i havent had a cask strength before. my buddy added a drop of water to his, but it ruined the smell imo. really dulled it down

after that you could sample some random stuff and had ardbeg uigeadail and balvenie doublewood 12. then went back to buddies place and had some more ive never had before: glenmorangie quinta ruban and port charlotte peat project

i'm thinking the glenmorangie will be my next bottle

it was a great day!
