Figured this is about the only place on 2+2 where this will be appreciated so here goes...
For the past couple of years I've been a member of the Board for a private school that holds an annual gala fundraiser. Part of the gala is an auction that, for the past two years anyway, has included a bottle of 1967 Members' Legacy Caperdonich.
Caperdonich Distillery was built in 1897 as a sister facility to the Glen Grant distillery. After only three years is was closed and not reopened until 1965. In 1977 is was purchased by Seagrams of Canada; most of the output goes into the Chivas blends. However the Members' Legacy Caperdonich, aged 36 years and now 46-years-old, is from a 2003 private bottling of only four casks by Douglas Laing Ltd — cask 4947 to be specific.
Jim Murray's Whisky Bible (3rd Edition) considers cask 4947 to be
"one of the most extraordinary batches of malt of all time" with a 96 out of 100 rating. Distilled in 1967, the single malt was bottled at cask strength of 57.6%. There were only two whiskies in the world with higher rating by 2005; apparently there are now four. The whisky has been described as being,
"... essentially a perfect whisky, with its salty coastal nose, mouth-coating marmalade fruitiness, very long finish evolving from sweet to a hint of salt and oak overlain by chocolate. This whisky has superb balance."
As a member of the Board I attend the gala with the intention of making a donation and have done so for the past two years by being the successful bidder for the single bottle of Caperdonich that has been on offer. Valued for auction purposes at $1,000, last year I paid $2,000 for a bottle and I just picked up this year's bottle for $2,700 — my "friend", who is the Director of the Board was jacking up the bidding because he knew I would go about $3K for a donation to the school. I receive a tax receipt for whatever I pay as the school is considered a charitable organization, so hey, whatever.
I shared last years bottle, #73, with a group of whisky aficionado friends during a poker home game. This years bottle, #120, will once again be shared with a group of friends at a poker home game, in one weeks time.
Here are a couple of pics of bottle #120:
This is an excerpt from Jim Murray's Whiskey Bible regarding the Caperdonich:
And finally, some info regarding the Caperdonich distillery:
The answer is "yes" — this whisky IS amazing and is unlike any I have ever tasted. I'm looking forward to next weeks game!
