El D,

I figured it couldn't possibly be almost half the cost.

Thanks

RBK,

I'll say it before El D does. "Read the thread". This isn't meant to be dickish but it's been answered about 8.2 times on every page....no matter how many PPP you have set as default. I've read it several times and am about to start another reread...there is sooo much great info from real sources

That said I'll probably still answer it tomorrow when I have more time and are more sober. Whisky is awesome and I love helping people get into it.

Edit- If you still hate the smell of JD you will most likely not get very into most Bourbons without a decent amount of time spent drinking. While JD is technically "Tennesse Whiskey" it is very very close to being legally allowed to be "Bourbon". (More on that later).

Nope. On sale at county run liquor monopoly in close in DC suburbs for $22 or something. Regular price $25 maybe? Picking up another bottle tonight, will confirm w. Pics!

El D, nice write-up on Balvenie. Just got home from Venice and found myself a Port Wood 21. Also got bought a Correyvreckan and Quinta Ruban.

Don't know what it is about airports, but they always make me buy more whisky than I can afford.

any suggestions for the best brand to get started and any tips for the best way to develop a taste for it would be appreciated.
I would try something completely different from JD, go to a bar with a friend and try two different whiskys and do a tasting of those. What I'm going to propose it's quite a gamble but I would include an islay there, Caol Ila 12 imo, it will be really different from the mental image you have about scotch, even if you don't like it you will find it somewhat interesting.

Any tried Balvenie Golden Cask 14 (rum cask) or Laphroaig PX Cask?

I've had a liter of the Golden Cask and will get another the next time I visit the duty free. It's better than the doublewood 12 and has also won whisky of the year awards. Get one if you can, very solid.

Last night I finished my bottle of Bruichladdich 10, and I'm looking to buy another Bruichladdich bottle but I'd like to try something a little different. I want one of their unpeated bottles, and these are the ones I see in klwines:

Rocks ($40)
Organic ($60)
2006 Barley ($70)
Laddie 16 ($110)

Anyone tried those? There have been reviews of the first two ITT, but not of the last two. I really liked the Laddie 10 so my first instinct is to buy the 16, but it would be nice to have some impressions before I shell out the money. Shark doctor, was your bottle the 16 or something different?

ET: I haven't tried the laddie 16 yet. I really enjoyed the Bruichladdich Laddie 10 and enjoyed the Bruichladdich Peat even more.

FML. Went to buy a few bottles of the Knob Rye and they were out Anyhow, for the doubters: $22.99 on sale.

Having some friends over tonight and might do a blind rye taste test with some combo of the following:

Hopefully it's less of a fail than my attempt at a bourbon taste test.

Nice. As I understand both are only sold at tax-free stores. I'll try to grab a Golden Cask on my short layover tomorrow, carribean rum cask sounds too interesting to pass up.

@foobar

Ha, I use the same monthly list from MC liquor's website, they definitely have some good monthly specials and despite the slightly higher tax, still come out to be cheaper than ABC.

So much for the taste test. Drank old fashioned's all night and killed the Willet and the High West. I prolly made them wrong (1.5 parts rye + muddled sugar cube w/ 2 dashes bittters and orange twist), but I'd rather just have rye neat/rocks.

Drank a lot of brown liquor around the fire on my patio on a ~35 degree night. Should have been a great night but instead my college roommate/long-time friend got way out of line/seriously over-aggressive w/ my neighbor who is also now a long time friend.

meh.

When I drink a lot of booze these days I'd rather just listen to music I like and forgo the drama. DAMN YOU WHISKEY!!!!

You used Willet in Old Fashioneds? Ouch.

Sorry to hear the night wasn't as good as it should have been.

I make mine much heavier on the whisky. More like 3 parts rye 1.5 is light by most standards. Usually it's between 2.25 and 3.

Edit- Agree some of the best nights are whisky and youtube/other music.

Since you don't drink a whole lot you may as well get something good and not worry too much about the price. An aged scotch will usually be tastier & smoother than a younger one. And since you like extra dirty martinis I'm thinking you'll want something with a lot of flavor... I'd recommend Highland Park 18, Laphraoig 18, Talisker 18, Lagavulin 16, or Ardbeg Uigeadail.

And also Springbank. It tastes like a dirty martini with hints of swamp gas and anchovies. Weird, but really good stuff.

Nomad:

When I first started making sidecars, diablo gave me advice in the cocktail thread to the extent of, "when making spirituous cocktails, its worth it to use good booze". Seemed like old fashioned fit the bill of "spirituous" cocktail, so I used good booze.

Okay, so I got a 45 min layover at Vienna's airport and thought I'd stock up some more, but I need to plan ahead. I'd appreciate recs on what's good on this list: http://www.heinemann-dutyfree.com/wi...20&order=price

My plan so far:

Balvenie Golden Cask 14
Balvenie Doublewood 12
Talisker 10
Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or

Those prices are pretty high. Do you have access to the regular stuff at home? If so I would just stick to the duty free only bottles and pick up the normal stuff home.
