This thread lately has been mostly a scotch discussion, where did the bourbon drinkers go? I'm looking for some new bourbons that I don't know about. Currently my favorites are Basil Hayden's, Woodford, and I suppose Blanton's. Enlighten me please.

As a matter of fact I just ordered 10 miniatures of American whiskey. I'll come back to this when they've arrived and I've tested them. Think I've switched to miniatures now, permanently. Then I will not get the undesired side effects . I've found out that during the first shot you are able to taste anything, after that you go kind of numb.

I just started drinking scotch whiskey and I'm sad that I waited so long.

Started off with a Balvenie doublewood 12 and nearly finished it in 3 days. Decided I wanted to leave 1/4 of the bottle so I went and picked up a McCallen 12 and Dalwhinnie 15. They're all so amazing!

I read some of the reviews and people pick out all these flavors. I have a hard time really tasting anything but an Oak / Cigar taste. My palate probably sucks.

Cool thread, subscribing.

Trying to find a bottle of pappy van winkle in the Boston area but I get the same response everywhere so I doubt I'll be getting one anytime soon. Anyone know where to get this?

Any opinions on Corner Creek Reserve? There's a limited supply available in Toronto right now, it costs about the same as Wild Turkey or JD, thinking about trying a bottle but the few reviews I have found very wildly so I don't know what to think.

May have something to offer here. I'll probably concentrate on miniatures, after some trial and error.

My scale, by which I'm intending to inform about my findings
  1. + = drinkable
  2. ++ = recommend
  3. +++ = definitely recommend

Here we go, American whiskey:
  • Jack Daniel's Original: +
  • Buffalo Trace: +++
  • Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select: ++
  • Noah's Mill: +++
Will return about the rest of the American whiskey miniatures I just got. Hoping to give more elaborate analyses with time. Feedback is of course very welcome!

I called all the Kappys in the area and basically they all had it this morning and it instantly sold out, some places might be getting more in on Friday so one can only hope.

The 10 is good, but I wasn't overly impressed. Go for the 15. Better value imo.

Chicago 'burbs.

I had bought other bourbon at places I knew had carried Pappy in the past and when I did I talked to the managers about if they had lists (none I talked to did). I called them and kept up to date on when it would be released, and I called more frequently in the past week when I knew Illinois' shipment had been sent (per the ORVWD FB page). Then I drove to three different stores and bought it. All in all I probably spent about 90 mins and made about 20 extra phone calls, but it was worth it in the end.

what did you pay for the 12, 15, and 20? I heard prices were extremely inflated this year but that could just have been one store I checked out.

I paid $60 for two of the 12s. I paid $100 for the third (gouging). Unfortunately I only saw 15 and 20 at the gouging place and paid $120 and $170 respectively, which is just mild gouging as compared to the 12. The last place wanted $350 for the 23 (lol), I saw one bottle elsewhere for $250, which I'm guessing is retail.

I've never had a bottle of Van Winkle bottle. They are near impossible to find in NC. I've tasted a few here and there and always liked it but... I like most whiskeys and I was never really blown away by the ones I've tried. I remember being specifically underwhelmed by the 23 yr old for the price. That said, I am still reaaaally stoked to be going to a Van Winkle Tasting at a local bar that somehow managed to get Julian Van Winkle III to visit for a tasting of all of the bourbons from Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery in a couple weeks.

Also, the American Whiskey club that I'm in is sending me my second bottle any day now and it will be Hookers House 21 year old pinot noir finished bourbon. I can hardly find anything about it but definitely excited and curious. Anyone tried it?
