je,

Black label is a great scotch to get started with. Black label rocks is still one of my standard bar drinks.

I recommend Old Pulteney, Glenlivet, or Glenmorangie.

Celebration drink needed.

Background: any sort of milestone is celebrated with a bottle of scotch (in my family). For example, from my end; first condo: Gold Label. First house: Blue Label.

Now I have my first baby coming anytime now. I'm thinking about Macallum 18.

Thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Shark,

Most anything you get in $200-400 will be awesome. I don't know about Macallum, but older macallans are definitely nice. I do think you pay a premium for the name brand of macallan and can get other stuff that's better at around the same price.

The Samaroli Evolution 2011 I posted earlier is around $350 and ****ing amazing.

Ed, where on earth are you getting those prices from?

I just bought the Macallam 18 for $270. Fwiw, I'm Canadian and bought it from the LCBO.

Read the posts again and take a wild guess.

damn. I'm such a noob; I didn't know you can buy these bottles at such a discounted price online. Do they deliver to Canada? (klwines.com)

The LCBO/BeerStore gives us the major shaft on prices for booze here. A huge chunk of the price is provincial taxes

SD,

Dude, you have the ****ing Internet right in front of you. Please don't ask any more stupid questions in this thread. Thanks.

Let me rephrase:

Being that I have never order alcohol online, can anyone share their experience with this process? (delivery time/reliability/best site to use and why).

Or is it on similar levels ordering ~DVD's on eBay or Amazon?

Don't even try to order to Canada, by the time you get it, it will be even more expensive than the LCBO.

I once ordered a free bottle (loyalty program gift) of Balvenie 21 portwood. It came with $280 of duties when it arrived (more than the cost of the bottle at the LCBO).

Shark, Goose, Neko:

LOL Canada. Now I understand why a friend visiting last week was so excited to pick up 3 nice bottles from Cask.

LOL Canada indeed. For reference, 24 cans of generic macro-brew beer (bud, labbats etc) will run you $40+ dollars. Probably close to double what you pay in the States.

Ok, so now that's done with. (LOL Canada)...

Apparently, from what I was told, Johnny Walker is pulling a fast one.
-They're getting rid of the green label, and repackaging it as Gold Label Reserve and upping the price from the regular green price point but lower than the regular gold price point ($70 to ~$80-90?)
-the original gold label is getting repackaged to a new "Platinum Label", while, of course increasing the price from the regular gold label price point ($100 to $150)

I grabbed 4 bottles of the original gold label; in the process saving 50%.

Shark,

I think black label is a very solid blend and great for drinking on the rocks or in cocktails. The more expensive ones are fine, but IMO you can get way tastier single malts for the same price.

ED,

I like black label; always have a couple of bottles in stock. With that said, I love Gold label. I can have it neat all day, and am pretty sure I can have it in my cereal if I ever run out of milk.

With all this said, my knowledge and palate for Scotch is currently very limited to the Johnny Walkers, Chivas Regal 18, sprinkled with a bit of Bruichladdichs and Glenfiddichs. I'm looking to explore the world of Scotch and am pretty open to any and all suggestions.

FTR, I'm normally a creature of habit and my everyday drink is actually a Rye (Crown Royal)

Last edited by Shark Doctor; 09-14-2012 at 01:03 AM. Reason: replaced whiskey with rye, for the nits

Green Label is superior to BL and GL imo, would suck if they didn't make it anymore. Might buy a couple bottles as a financial investment lol
