If you want peated similarish price range go for BRUICHLADDICH PORT CHARLOTTE 10 YR PEATED SCOTCH, love this stuff. Slightly less peated, cheaper and underrated Ledaig 10.

Slightly peated from Cambelton I’d try Springbank 10.

No peat Glengoyne has some good stuff, bunnahabhain 12 and Ancnoc 12. Sweeter profile Ancnoc more of an ocean taste I guess go Bunnahabhain.

From the looks it seems like you mainly prefer scotch, I would recommend The Balvenie 12 Doublewood for a nice addition to your selection. Mac 12 too (I'm sure you've heard of both but they are good quality for cost staples. Nikka Coffey Grain is a good one as well. If you can find any Yamazaki 12 too!

If you’d like going to bed early I’d go for one of Grooves choices. Honestly nothing wrong with those selections but I find them kind of boring and overrated. Good choices for someone young and just getting into drinking single malt whiskies neat or even on the rocks. Zeno however is an old fart and been around the block and I’m guessing looking to expand his horizons.

Picked up a Aerstone Land Cask 10 yr. Fairly new ~$30 single malt from Grant and Sons marketed as "rich and smoky" with decent reviews so thought it was worth a try and...

this **** is terrible; do not recommend. It's smokey yes, but not a pleasant smoke, more of a burnt tire smoke. Tastes like a cheap blend, maybe a slightly smoother Johnnie Red.

Got this in today. Haven't had any in quite a while. Thinking of getting a little collection going for some varied sipping. Have never had the Bunna or Deanston before, pretty excited!

These seem to be really good solid, reliable sources. All at a respectable proof and non chill filtered, and all I think don’t add coloring. Two Islays, one peated, one not. Really curious on the Deanston.

The Deanston i gotta be honest kinda disappointed me. Not that i don't like/enjoy it. It reminds me of Jameson quite a bit

A first smell and taste of Laphroaig is what blew me away like a decade+ ago which got me into whisky. Haven't tasted it in ages, cannot wait to experience it again.

I had the Quinta Ruban 12 at some whisky tasting event once and that made me get a bottle of it like 6 years ago. Remembered it to be absolutely delicious so was eager to get that again, but saw the 14 to be quite a bit higher rated/reviewed and the price difference was basically minimal. So went with this.

For the Springbank 10, I saw a Ralfy review (2016) of this, that was enough to add it to the batch!

Springbank 10 is fantastic. I think I should keep my mouth shut and let the masses pass this for and buy Macallan and Balvanie.

I’m really interested on the one on the left. Not a Glenmorangie fan but at those prices you’re not taking a big risk. Also once again on paper the specifications seem promising.

I’m drinking a really nice American rye. Non chill filtered, single barrel, 104 proof. Probably only around 6 years old but in American new charred oak barrel doggie years that’s like 20 years in Scotland.

If you like the Four Roses small batch, definitely give the Four Roses Single Barrel a try. Around $50/bottle for me locally, one of my favorites.



I personally have been hoarding Blanton's lately, as it has been showing up periodically at liquor stores near me, and I rush and buy one every time I see one in stock on the web (up to 8 bottles + 2 I have drank during the pandemic). I think it is great, and comes in a lovely bottle. ~$60/bottle locally, people trying to get much more in aftermarket.



Speaking of lovely bottles, Willet Pot Still Reserve has one of the most unique ( and IMHO nicest ) bottles out there, made to look like the pot stills that they distill them in. And the Whiskey is delicious to boot, slightly sweet and carmely , reminds me of eating a popcorn ball.



Just bought a case to split with a friend of Noah's Mill. Higher proof, also from Willet distillery ( although I believe it is sourced ), it is my friends favorite Bourbon, and I also think it is quite good. We got it for ~$58/bottle with tax, seems like the price is going up in some places.



And if you really want to go for a splurge on something that you can actually find, try Bookers. The price has taken a jump around here at about $85/bottle (seems that it was in the $50-$60 range a few years ago ), but it is very tasty, and is quite high proof, so you can stretch a bottle a bit more than some of the lower proof options.

I don't know how I haven't found this thread before considering Whisky and 2+2 are two of the main pillars in my life, but better late than never.

Anyone else doing way more cocktails at home than usual? I've been making quite a few old fashioned recently. Mostly with ecbp bur ive been known to cheat on whiskey and make a rocks marg occasionally as well.

Not so much, but now and then. There's an indian restaurant group that makes a fantastic old fashioned, called Viceroy's Old Fashioned, by dishoom.

It needs some green tea and to be aged ideally for a month and apparently improves with age. I made a batch in january which is aging nicely. Well worth googling to see if you can find it, if not I'll dig out the book and note it down if you're interested.

Heard it’s overpriced for what it is. The 1792 and all the Barton distillery stuff is starting to grow on me. If you ever see the high rye pick it up.

not really a rye fan but bought a bottle of angel's envy rye and it is fantastic

Yeah I’m starting to lean more to rye everyday. Not a fancy bottle or anything but Wild Turkey rye is fantastic. Start with the 101 proof rye and work your way up, I love the stuff and it’s like $30 for a 1 liter bottle. Don’t buy the 81proof, start with 101 or the Russel Reserve 6 year or single barrel.

Re: rye. I too like the angels envy but it's not really reprentative of the normal rye flavor profile. Finished in rum barrels, it's way sweeter and something more like an after dinner drink than the normal spiciness you get with ryes.

If you want to try an accessible rye as a jumping off point, really recommend checking out high west rendezvous rye. It's a nice blend that IMO is a good starting point for people trying to get into rye.

Angel's Envy is really good, but at an awfully steep price point compared to more affordable options that aren't much worse.

It's good for one drink at a time; having poured myself a second glass of it, I found the sweetness to really cause diminishing returns, and I say that despite having no issue pouring multiple glasses of Maker's Mark.

I always find rye a little too spicy for drinking neat (well over ice for me) but I love it in an Old Fashioned.

I really like Sazerac Rye for an inexpensive intro into ryes ( if you can find it ). Rittenhouse Rye also quite good for a low cost rye, although may be a bit too much if you are not used to the spiciness of ryes, beginners may want to use it in cocktails.
