Picked up a couple of books off Amazon. Having trouble getting anything decent at my local shops but at least I can read about them.

Seems like most of the recent chatter here has been about bourbon, I moved to a new place and did a big buy of scotches anyone have any suggestions of ones I should try based on what's here?

The new ones i got:

Ardbeg Uigeadail
Bowmore Gold Reef 1l
Bunnahabhain 8 Year Old - The MacPhail's Collection (Gordon & MacPhail)
Caol Ila 12 Year Old
Lagavulin 16 Year Old
Nikka Whisky From The Barrel
Octomore 07.3 5 Year Old
Yoichi Single Malt

The ones i already had in the back that are harder to see
Macallan 12
laphroig QA cask

Did the latest purchase on masterofmalt because i can only find about 5 different single malts around here.

Lagavulin 16 and Coal Ila are the only ones I had tried before although i've had the regular bowmore and quite like it.

Are you asking which other whisky's you should try besides the ones you have there on the shelf? Obviously try all of those.

I would do this order over three sessions, if that is what you are asking:
Dalwhinnie, Cardhu, Glenrothes, the Japanese ones / Macallan, Bowmore, Bunna, Laga / Caol, Ardbeg, Laphroig, Octomore. The session breaks are pretty close you could probably move them one either way. Just don't start with the stove pipe first and you should be good.

If you want to branch out from those:
If you are in a smokey whisky mood you could try Talisker and Bruichladdich peated. Seems like you have the bases covered with the Ardbeg, Laga, Laphroig, and Caol though.

If you want lighter, try some of the offerings from Glenmorangie or Highland Park. For a good sherry bomb I like Aberlour A'bunadh.

I just started re-ramping up my scotch collection, been on bourbon for a while now.

I second the recommendation of Talisker, Highland Park, and Aberlour Abunadh. I would add Clynelish 14, Glendronach 18, and Glencadam 15 to that list, none of them are peated and all great quality for the price. Oh, and Springbank! Get the 12yo cask strength.

As for where to buy, I highly recommend whiskysite.nl
They have very good prices and selection, and their shipping is like 50% cheaper than MoM or TWE. It takes a little longer, though lately bottles have been much faster to arrive (10 days instead of 20-30).

zomg, get the Caol Ila 18 and thank me later. Also Laphroaig 18 is amazing but becoming harder to find

They only arrived a few days ago, which is I guess unfortunate after reading the post above that peated whiskys get worse if they are opened but I doubt they will last long enough to make a difference. I have already opened all of them to try, nothing worse than going to someones place who has a great collection and 3/4 of them are closed so you feel bad trying them.

The Cardhu is like 20EU here so it's my go to cheap one that I drink when I'm getting drunk vs having one or two. I'm not a huge fan of the glenrothes so doubt I would get that again but it's also one of the ones I can get locally. I've had both the talisker skye/storm which from memory I liked but wanted to branch out. I've had the standard glenmorangie so i'll try a different one, there's an 18YO on MoM for 100EU maybe i'll add that to my next list

The octomore is from Bruichladdich, it was the only >100EU one I bought, it's very strong probably not my usual taste, Laphroaig/ardbeg are definitely my go to at the moment love that smell.

I've had the standard Aberlour and I quite liked it, i've added the Abunadh batch 57 to my next list thanks! I've never heard/seen Clynelish 14, Glendronach 18, Glencadam 15 and Springbank i've added them all (except the Glencadam which appears to be sold out on MoM) to my basket so I don't forget though i'll probably cull it down for my next order. I think over half of the ones I have at the moment are peated or 'heavily peated' which is definitely my preference at the moment so branching out sounds good. I'll definitely check whiskysite.nl might be cheaper not having to come from UK (I'm in Spain) though I got free shipping last time and it was 2-3 days so will just come down to overall price. Just did a quick check and it appears to be 5-10% cheaper, good tip thanks!

EDIT: Just did some more comparisons, seems about 50/50 which are cheaper on which site, but MoM displays in EU but charges in GBP so probably ends up more expensive after actual conversion rates

I'm a huge fan of Laphroaig, I may splurge on the 18 for my next order, this is the only one on MoM

https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskie...-whisky/?srh=1

looks like whiskysite has the standard 18

https://www.whiskysite.nl/en/laphroa...years-old.html

The caol18 is pretty reasonable as well

I'm a big fan of the nikka although it's the only blended in the collection it's excellent for the price, pouring from the bottle when it's full is not ideal though.

Thanks All!

Got the following at Goody Goody they have a nice selection. Suspect I'll be back for some nicer bottles tomorrow but have been looking for these BiBs and it's the first time I've seen them, plus Antique Weller and more ER10 which I can't find anywhere for a few weeks now.

I bought a bottle of this last year and loved it when I first opened it but, after half a bottle, found I could tell that it is a young spirit and is still a bit harsh underneath that upfront woodiness.

Would def choose regular laphroaig 10 if both are available at similar price.

Diablo thanks for recommending this.

Really enjoyed this. Awesome nose and taste. A bit more burn than I would of expected but I kind of like that. Picked it up at new Total Wine liquor store which had a grand opening, $36 a bottle. Also got the flask in the pic for $3, they where giving out $10 coupons for any non alcohol purchase over $10.

Nit: nice. You'll almost certainly like the slightly higher priced and higher proofed Noah's mill as well.

Zomg: one I don't think anyone recommended yet is Oban. I'd definitely recommend that for something that still is nice and smoky, but not the huge peat of the ardbeg/laphroaig/etc.

I already put Noah on my list.

I'm not a scotch guy but Oban is my favorite and I've had some really nice Scotch on business trips to Scotland. My wife gave me a bottle for Valentines when dating and that made her wife material.

Received NSA lowball glasses as a gift tonight. Anybody else find it strange that the NSA has a gift shop?

It's not strange if their gifts have hidden mics/ cameras in them.

I go to France every year as my wife is French. Figured I'd take advantage of the fact that they have Blanton's Gold and straight from the barrel there. Just ordered a couple bottles. Tried to get the standard Blanton's to get a full tasting but can't find it even in Europe.

Nit: it's really weird to me that you're actually out there searching for blantons. I mean, I like blantons just fine, but it's not something I'd put any effort into finding if it weren't there on the shelf.

Zomg: I've had a few Nikkas but besides the Coffey which I really like, I can't really recall what was what. I currently have this one:

It's really good. Less smoky and more fruity/light than the other nikkas I've had, but it's really tasty.

You have a bowmore that I haven't had. Have you had bowmore darkest? I highly recommend that - smoky in that bacony way with nice rich sherry finish. Even better, if you can find something like this one, which is kinda like cask strength bowmore darkest. So good!

Picked up another bottle of the 36 y.o., single malt, 57.2% Caperdonich Member's Legacy I've posted about here before. The bottle is valued at $1,000 CAD but I paid higher for it at a live auction fund raiser event because the cause is a good one (yeah, yeah, humblebrag).

I think this is the third or fourth one I've bought over the years. Still haven't opened the one I got 2 years ago, gotta get to work on that sometime soon.

Diablo: I'm not exclusively looking for Blanton's, I just make a point of looking for it among other things whenever I stop somewhere. I do find it somewhat amusing/annoying that I can't even find it anywhere.

I tasted it side by side with the original sample I saved in 2015 when I opened the bottle and below is what I thought of both. "Older sample" refers to the sample I saved back in 2015, "opened bottle glass" is the one that had been sitting with the bottle almost empty for at least 6 months.

Older sample glass is sharper, opened bottle glass has sweeter nose, with a little toffee. Mouth and finish neat is spicier and lasts longer in the older sample.

With water the open bottle glass is still sweet, you really have to get in the glass to get the more herbal and zesty notes. Those notes, which are my favorite in this Scotch, are much more noticeable in the older sample. The taste and finish of the open bottle glass is kind of flat. The finish on the older sample if spicier and way longer.

There's definitely a difference between the two, but it's not as bad as one may expect. The open bottle glass is fairly good and drinkable, but not as outstanding as the older bottle sample.

Sample size of 1, and not a blind taste, but at least there's some evidence that opened bottles of peaty Scotch do not hold up as well.
Thanks for the writeup.

Did you vacuum seal the opened bottle, or just kept the original cap? Curious how much difference that makes as I've been vacuum sealing all my booze, but don't have a control to test.
