I just had so much fun at that damn place. the food was great too. but yes, it's a loud and crowded place. I'll have to go on every trip to DC for sure.

Tried Highland Park Freya and Odin side by side last night.

Both are excellent. The Freya was exceptional. I should have bought that bottle I saw in Philly on the shelf.

Interesting to hear a positive review. I was saving these two as a retirement present for a friend and there's a bottle of Odin at a local store that I can get for $200-something. Was on the fence about pulling the trigger but maybe I should? Guller are you in the US and interested in the Odin in this price range? If so, I might be able to hook you up.

I know that there's a lot of reviews out there that say that the Freya is not great, but I also loved it when I tried it a couple of years ago. Bought a bottle at Total Wine a couple of years back and I've been saving it for a special occasion.

Tried Medleton Dair Ghaelach - Tree 1 the other night. I'm not usually into Irish Whiskeys but this one was pretty unique and excellent.

Apparently they finish this in barrels made from old growth (100+ year old) oak hogshead harvested from the distillery grounds. This was tree # 1.

Just heard about this thread.

Hope to contribute at some point but not a whiskey baller by any means and have become mostly a bourbon fan and even Possibly prefer American rye over Scotch.

With that said anyone got a hookup for Poppy at retail in Houston, Tx. Heck even Blanton's has a waiting list here at the main liquor store chain in town.

Any tips for a good bourbon under $40? Just picked up some single barrel Evan Williams for just under $30 pretty impressed. I enjoyed it more than my last purchases of Knob Creek single barrel 120 and Basil Hayden. Probably prefer it more than basic Woodford as well.

Heh, thought it was a typo in other thread but, fwiw, it's "Pappy" for "Pappy Van Winkle". Unfortunately, nobody's gonna have a hookup for you as in the past few years, Van Winkle hysteria has reached ridiculous heights. Best bet to buy at retail is to be a regular patron and get in with a local (non chain) store. Other than that, you're prolly going to have to either win a lottery, camp out...Or pay secondary market value, which isn't worth the cost IMO.

Yeah I know it's Pappy, what can I say really enjoying my Evan Williams.

Local chain with waiting list has a loyalty card and give bottles based on spend. Hoping there's some type of reset where my minimal spend will accumulate and eventually get me towards the top of the list.

Speaking of Pappy. Has anyone tried any newer papies? I'm not sure when the Stitzer Weller stocks ran dry, but is the newer stuff basically Buffalo Trace profile?

Had it at a tasting last week and that was exactly my impression.
But i´m still a newbie when it comes to bourbon...

BT distilate, presumably SW mashbill. Fwiw, we've done side by sides of the SW/BT VW 20 blind and the SW was unanimous favorite. Small sample size, but there you have it.

@nit - lots of good recommendations on bottles throughout this thread. Quickly through, for stuff you should always be able to find near $40 - smooth ambler old scout 7 or 10 yr. High West rendezvous rye.

Thanks foobar I'll check the thread. I enjoy rye but right now looking for bourbon and ideally something with less eye than the old scout.

Also this is probably narrow minded but kind of want bourbon from Bourbon county.

Diablo perfect. Eagle Rare in particular sounds perfect. The only reason I was looking for Pappy and Blanton was because I recently bought a bottle of Buffalo Trace for mixed drinks and was really impressed and wanted something else from them with more depth. Eagle Rare appears to essentially be aged single barrel Buffalo Trace.

buffalo trace also makes a few varieties of Colonel E.H. taylor that are good imo. Those tend to be in the 40-80 range though.
