I may not be being clear here. I'm not saying you are cheap in a general way. I'm saying you are clearly willing to spend a lot of money on possessions, some of which are highly depreciable or not of great practical importance, and yet you are hemming and hawing over spending an extra $45 for an experience that may be unique and memorable. Of course it's your money and you can do as you like with it, my comment is simply to say that in a general sense (not talking about the merits of this particular event), I would go without that sixth varsity jacket or pair of sneakers before I would pass on a memorable life experience over money.
Which, again, maybe isn't exactly the case here, but your post certainly makes it sound like you were largely motivated by price. (And, side note, it seems completely obvious and normal to me that events would cost more in a place with higher operating cost / cost of living / median income. You don't expect to pay the same thing for housing, or dinner, or a movie ticket in a big city as you do in a smaller town... why would this be different?)
