Gaddy, you might be the first troll we've ever had in the whiskey thread - congrats!!!

It sounds like the money is an issue for you. Instead of going out, stay home, drink 2 bottles of mad dog, and watch Netflix. If you're feeling really crazy, order a pizza. If not, just make due with a nice bag of microwave popcorn.

Or you could spend more than that... I'll even answer your next question of what to do when you're there?

All this coming from the guy who has an insatiable desire for $900 hoodies. When you're old, I'm sure you will look back fondly on all those great clothes you had.

Gaddy,

Fwiw, at a whiskey bar in sf (hard water), a flight of half ounce pours of 10, 12, 15, and 20 costs $125 (regular menu, not an event).

Update your notebook, I don't even own a single hoodie!

I think we'll just drink from our bottle of Blanton's while watching what people in the buildings across the way are doing for NYE from our 17th floor view.

Haha, it's all good and you seem like a nice dude from your posts... just take it from an old married dude with kids, if I were young and had a bunch of disposable income again, I would never pinch pennies on experiences while spending dough on stuff, which is what your post sounded like. Just my $.02, if it's a bad read then all the better

I'm not one to pinch pennies. I'm about to blow 4 grand on an Eames lounge chair. It's more about not wanting to pay for the $160 one out of principle when it is more expensive yet so much worse than the other location. And I don't want to drive out to SD in the rain, then have to drive back in the morning to make it to my mother's Rose Bowl party (I'm a USC alum). That SD one does seem great, though. I wish they weren't shafting us here in L.A. I sent an email complaining to the GM.

I may not be being clear here. I'm not saying you are cheap in a general way. I'm saying you are clearly willing to spend a lot of money on possessions, some of which are highly depreciable or not of great practical importance, and yet you are hemming and hawing over spending an extra $45 for an experience that may be unique and memorable. Of course it's your money and you can do as you like with it, my comment is simply to say that in a general sense (not talking about the merits of this particular event), I would go without that sixth varsity jacket or pair of sneakers before I would pass on a memorable life experience over money.

Which, again, maybe isn't exactly the case here, but your post certainly makes it sound like you were largely motivated by price. (And, side note, it seems completely obvious and normal to me that events would cost more in a place with higher operating cost / cost of living / median income. You don't expect to pay the same thing for housing, or dinner, or a movie ticket in a big city as you do in a smaller town... why would this be different?)

SD is the eight-largest city in the U.S. and second-largest in CA in terms of population. Talking to the GM, apparently LA location didn't get a Pappy 23 this year and SD did, so nothing can do about that. But at least match the lesser whiskeys SD is offering in the taste. Just hard to stomach that they offering an inferior product, less of it and at a greater cost than sister location. Yeah, I spend a lot on clothes and stuff, but I'm making sure I'm getting the best price. I didn't just buy the Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman from the local Design Within Reach for $4500, I bought it from place in Illinois with the upgraded leather for $3800.

They are offering a slightly more easier to find product, not necessarily an inferior one. I think this is one of those times to have a little Zen and enjoy what's in front of you.

Rarity drives price but in a blind test what would you enjoy more? Probably 50/50

Van Winkle Special Reserve Bourbon Lot B. 12 Years old⠀
Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye 13 Years Old⠀
Pappy Van Winkle 15 years Old⠀
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Years Old⠀
Pappy Van Winkle 23 Years Old

They put in the 23 year rather than the 12, and they add tastes of the three other Van Winkles all for $35 less.
The pours have to be smaller right?

Enjoyed a nice Irish whiskey at my buddies place tonight but didn't quite catch the name... asked him to send me a pic of the label.

Back home and finishing up the evening with a wee dram of Oban 14 y.o. — have the next week off from work so maybe another nip or a nip of another is in order...

Non-budget whiskey - I've had it once, but only after quite a few other drinks, so don't quite remember exactly what I thought of it. But people really rave about this whiskey. Worth getting the High West Midsummer Night's Dram for $89.99? K&L keeps getting 30-50 bottles of a time of it, which sell out within the hour. Wondering if I should grab one next time.
Gotta admit, I really like the Weller. Can be difficult to get in the UK though.

I went there once and had an ok time, but was there with super lame company. I bet it would be an awesome place to visit solo or with fun friends.

@judge,

I'm local and would offer to buy you a pour, but last time I did that for somebody in this thread it turned out to be a horrible mistake.

Anyone do their own barrel aging? My wife got me a Breckenridge barrel, our preferred bourbon, and I'm looking for ideas. I started my first batch, a manhattan, and am already thinking of my next batch. I prefer old fashions, but I'm not sure if barrel aging would add anything since the bourbon is already aged. Suggestions?

sipping on some caol ila 18, this bottle never fails to amaze me and now that Lag 16 prices have risen to ~$90 a bottle this may become my go to nice bottle.

I use 5 liter oak barrels (charred) to age Manhattans. The result is worth the effort. 5 liters is about right for me based on my drinking habitats. You might not need so much! To key things, use a good bourbon (I like Noah's Mill) and absolutely use only Carpano Antica vermouth. This is the only vermouth I use whenever I make Manhattans. The result is a mellower and smoother drink. I like my Manhatten strong so I mix 3 parts bourbon to 1 part vermouth. Add the bitters per glass. Lots of opinions on all of this per Google.

Enjoy...
