QC is much more than 30 outside of duty free shops. At Total Wine it is 52.99. 10 is 37.99. 18 is 75.99. Ardbeg 10 is also 52.99.

This EH Taylor talk will make me have a drink of mine after probably 2 years of not touching that bottle. Bought it in ~2012 iirc, when it was still fairly easy to get it. Does an open bottle bottle of bourbon keep well? Mine is ~80% full.

Re: open bottles.

People argue about oxidation being a problem or not but the consensus seems to be that it you keep them sealed, upright out of the sunlight, they should be good indefinitely.

I think I've convinced myself that flavors fade when bottles are left a long time less than half full, but I'm not really sure if that's actually true.

A bunch of us should buy two of our favorite bottles and do a long group study on this. Drink 2/3 of one bottle, then leave both for a year, then blind sample.

Sounds like fun. I think I have 2 Elmer t lee single barrels from same barrel currently unopened that I'd be game to try this with.

I definitely noticed changes with a Lagavulin 16 that stayed opened at low levels for quite a while. I still have 2oz of it in a small bottle. I have several small samples that I've been saving for comparisons: Glendronah 15, Highland Park 18, Laphroaig 18, Springbank 15, Talisker 18.

The only problem for me is that currently I'm trying to reduce the amount of opened bottles and this experiment would go against that!

My favorite of the bunch (although I still have two I haven't tasted):

Caol ila 21yo A. D. Rattray (56.8%)
Nose: clean peat, very similar to the lagavulin 12yo, but a bit more delicate. Mineral, maritime. Mild oak, a little herbal, faint citrus fruits. Complex and outstanding. Doesn't change much with water, maybe a little more mineral.

Taste: mineral arrival, spicy, strong alcohol, sweet peat. With water it gets a little sweeter and fruitier.

Finish: peaty, mineral, very spicy, bitter oak at the end. Long, with a lingering sweet peat.

Overall: outstanding, very similar to the lagavulin 12 CS, maybe a tad more refined. I tasted some Lagavulin 12 after this one and it was definitely more raw and young. Pity that this is for sale only in the German market.

Agree. Great everyday drinker. Sadly, like many other bourbons, the 12 year is losing its age statement. May want to buy a few bottles now if you like them.

Went to the whisky bar tonight. Unfortunately no Caol Ila AD Rattay, but got to try a few things.

Westland Distillery Single Malt and Sherry Cask: not a fan. tasted like young bourbons, very oaky, not very complex. I thought they were going to be more Scotch-y (they're full barley AFAIK).

Caol Ila Stitchel Reserve: Unpeated Caol Ila, it was good but not great. A lot of cereal/barley taste, but definitely better when peated.

Compass box Flaming Heart: The 2012 edition, which has great reviews. Peaty, very nice, but also not as great as my expectations were after reading online reviews.

Blackadder Raw Cask Glenrothes 24yo: Amazing! fruity, strong, well rounded. I kept adding water and it kept getting better. https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/46...rothes-1989-ba Highly recommended if you can get your hands on it (Manndl, I'm looking at you, it's available in German stores).

Glenfarclas 105: I keep trying Glenfarclas, and I still really don't like the flavor profile. It's a me problem probably, just like when I try the Arran. Some styles I just don't like.

That's what I call a productive night at the bar! (only half pours of each, otherwise I'd be puking my guts out now).
