You're not getting that liquor into Canada without either smuggling it or paying twice what it's worth in duties.

I ordered a bottle from Neteller (retail about $150USD) with points and it showed up with $330CAD (the Canadian retail price was about $275CAD at the time) tacked onto it from the border, had to send it back. A free "prize" bottle.

The Canadian liquor stores don't really have anything special or exciting bourbon wise. They have some of the older scotches at flagship stores (biggest ones in Toronto), but horrible value obviously.

Goose is right. As laid back as Canada is on most things, they're surprisingly uptight about liquor coming in. To the point where people won't ship aftermarket whiskey from US to canada cause risk of it getting intercepted is super high.

But let's say you figure out how to get the booze to your friend...whisk(e)y is a pretty broad category. Can help with recommendations if you can narrow it down a little bit. A good place to start is:

American (ie. Bourbon/rye) or Scotch?

i got a sample from this super pricey whisky
but sadly it wasn´t really my taste.
i really liked the nose:
plum +flower notes, but also old copper coins
taste:
dried fruits, honey+ginger but then gets smooth like a old cognac
aftertaste:super dry&tannic

the finish killed it for me,but i´m super happy that i didn´t it.
the cost of such a bottle could lead me into bankruptcy

That's like a 100 euro sample, was it a trade?

I was going to ask if you've ever had a Karuizawa. Did you open that one? I'm interested in your notes, not like I can afford one but I'm still curious if all the hype is deserved.

All,

Just pre-ordered a Supernova 2015. http://www.reservebar.com/products/a...supernova-2015

$206 w/ shipping+tax to CA. They just sent me a coupon code w/ my receipt. If you order one, try VALUEDCUSTOMER for $10 off.

My last Ardbeg purchase (Perpetuum) was underwhelming, and reviews of the 2014 Supernova (I never tasted it) were not that great, so I was a little hesitant to pull the trigger. But, eh, they said it's the last Supernova ever and I'm a sucker for this ****.

I tried the perpetuum recently and didn't think it was that good. A friend mine has the 2014 supernova, I need to exchange a couple of samples with him sometime soon.

i will pass on this SN.
i had the SN 2014 version and thought it was slightly better than the Perpetuum.
but still not good enough to buy it for the hefty price tag...

foo,

Lol, like prior Ardbeg Galileo and Supernova releases, this one is not actually aged in space, just celebrating whisky aged in space.

Hmm,

After further consideration, it /does/ seem unlikely that they'd launch enough booze into space to sell bottles @ $200-whatever.

Anyhow, relevant article:

I have no idea how the guys running the International Space Station agreed to let a barrel or so of whisky sit there for 3 years. I guess there's some experimental value in it

Tens,

a) You can pay to get commercial payloads sent into space, stored in space, etc. It's very expensive.

b) There were twenty test tubes sent up, not a barrel. That will have cost Ardbeg a ****load of money, maybe millions. Sending a barrel of whiskey into space and storing it on the space station for 3 years would cost a crazy amount of money.

Here's the white paper they wrote about the test:

Personally, I think it's a bunch of bull****.

Can any of you guys recommend a good Irish whiskey? I am primarily a bourbon/rye drinker. Recently tried some red breast 12 and tbh, it had a horrible finish for me.

Powers johns Lane? Green spot?

Thanks. Will give the Jameson special reserve a go.

How's the willet bourbon? how old? WFE Bourbon is nearly impossible to find here in the northeast. Seems like most are gift shop only bottles.

Would love to try some one day but seriously, Willett pricing is going the way of Pappy. I mean, Willett didn't even distill any of its bourbon.

So the ISS-Ardbeg aging process was an experiment. I would imagine that flavor profile isn't the primary concern when launching food up into space though (speaking generally for any food/drink company)

Even though it costed Ardbeg and Nanoracks x amount of money to conduct this experiment, I'm sure there's some marketability in saying "we have **** up in the ISS!"
