Re: Whisky

Emptied the cabinet and see what i have.

Current lot that i'm trying to get through.

Ones at the bottom are mixed in with standard spirits.

Think i'm going to go for Ron Swansons Lagavulin next

Had the angel's envy rye for the first time in quite a while this past week and remembered how much I really enjoy it - sweetness you don't normally find in rye (from rum finishing) but without it being overpowering/off putting. Probably not a "open er up and drink the whole bottle with a few friends" type of pour, but def a nice change of pace for a glass or three every now and again.

Re: Whisky

ET,

After you went to the trouble of posting that for me, how could I not go for it?

Did a little tasteoff between the three special Glenmorangies I have - Signet, the new Companta, and Artein.

Artein I love. Super tart plummy/prune-y flavor. The Companta is a little redder color, and is more fruity on the start and middle, lot of cherry-ish flavor with a bit of orange, and then has a little bit of that tart stonefruit flavor on the finish. Sweeter and not nearly as tart as the Artein. Really loved it, but love the Artein more. The Signet is of course completely different, ton of chocolate and coffee flavor there.

Re: Whisky

Diablo,

Nice! Did you get to talk to the Glenmorangie rep?

I have some extra cash coming in this week (from winning the NFL pool, if you remember I told you about it) and was planning to spend some of it in a nice bottle. I saw that the Companta is back in stock at klwines, would you recommend it at $100? FTR, I was planning to buy the Balvenie 21 but that one is a regular release so it will be around to buy it at another time.

This cask strength Talisker looks interesting too, but I'm wary of no age statement independent bottlings. http://www.klwines.com/detail.asp?sku=1154938

i would buy that in a heartbeat if i had a chance.

i`m going to a whisky tasting tomorrow and this is the lineup:
1.Flight:
CÁRN MÓR Vintage Collection (Single cask @ 46 %) - Highland Park 1998, Strathmill 1990 and Benriach 1985

2.Flight:
Strictly Limited Edition @ 46 % - Auchroisk 1998, Blair Athol 1998 and Mortlach 1997

3.Flight (Single Cask Malt Scotch Whisky in cask strenght):
Beinn À Cheo Glen Moray 1995
Celebration of the Cask Braes of Glenlivet 1994 and Macduff 1991

looking forward to the 2.flight since i only had whiskies from mortlach so far.
CÁRN MÓR is the oldest independent bottler and i their masterclass at the last whisky fair.

ET,

I didn't actually go to the presentation in redwood city, I just ordered a bottle to the sf location.

Absolutely recommend it for $100. And while I love the balvenie 21, I just don't think it's worth it for almost $200. It's great, but I think there's more interesting and more complex stuff for less money than that. Buy the companta and the talisker and buy me $30 in drinks next time you're in sf, all for the price of that balvenie 21!

I'll also prob order a bottle of that talisker now that you've pointed it out, dammit you're costing me a lot of money!

Diablo,

1) I can get the Balvenie for $160 so there won't be an extra $30 to buy you a drink next time.

2) I saved you $25 on the companta so the way I see it you owe me a drink next time I'm out there! (probably june)

I guess I'm ordering both bottles today.

Re: Whisky

My dad turns 60 in a couple weeks, I'd like to get him a nice bottle of scotch for part of his present but I don't know much about it, he loves Glenlivet 12 and I'm not really sure I've seen him buy anything nicer than that for himself. Would a better gift be Glenlivet 18 or something like Lagavulin 16? also open to other suggestions in the $100 range.. thanks in advance

The glenlivet 18 or the glenlivet 16 nadurra are probably good choices. Unless you know he likes peaty scotches going from glenlivet to lagavulin would probably be a bit much taste difference.

Vike,

Either of those glenlivets (18 or nadurra) would be great IMO. I'd prob lean towards getting him the 18 because the cask strength nadurra will be too intense for a lot of people.

... And since you're going to be under your budget if you buy the 18, get him a couple of glencairn glasses to go with the bottle, then make him open it and have a drink together.

Glenmorangie Quinta ruban: a bit on the sweet side but delicious.

Bunnahabbhain 12: unpeated islay, no smoke at all, but lots of maritime flavors.

Highland Park 12: this one will have some peat but not nearly as overpowering as with talisker or laphroaig.
just tried the Glenmorangie Quinta urban and it was great, i like the sweetness and the port flavor. i guess the Bunnahabbain is next on the list

Mann, I'm surprised that no whisky stood out, seems like a collection of good ones from the descriptions.

Diablo, in case you haven't purchased the talisker cask strength yet, klwines just discounted the talisker 18 to $110. That's a smoking deal for such a great bottle!

Smile i got 1 more.

poured me another dram

this should be simular to the cask strenght that klines sells.
since it is 57% and i`m a wimp i put some water in to get around 50%.
nose:super smoky, ash, later seaweed and some lemons
taste:wow smoke and ash but some critus fruits coming in the middle before it ends in smoked seaweed.at last the typical chilly catch of talisker kicks in.
aftertaste:long, almost no cask but hints of tropical fruits.
great stuff!

Re: Whisky

I'm pretty happy with my Bunnahabhain 21 too, they make some really great stuff.

Still waiting for them to ship the Companta and Talisker. Klwines is usually pretty good about shipping stuff fast, but apparently they have been slammed shipping pre-orders. Crossing my fingers so I can get them before the weekend!

Re: Whisky

Hi,
I, with the help of friends and family, have created what we think is a very special collection of Islay Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in miniature form from all 8 working distilleries of Islay.

Any questions? What do you think?
