Thanks for clarifying. It’s just odd, I feel like **** day after if I have a few shots (Unlike light beer). I went to a bar maybe a month back and asked for a triple on the rocks and the server made a comment about “wow you must be having a rough day” lmao and my friend made a comment even though he goes out to drink alone and gets hammered.

Your post has inspired me!

What is everyone's worst whiskey purchase(s)?

mine:

3.

Spoiler:

Jameson IPA caskmates.

Not really a Jameson fan to begin with, and I liked the IPA even less. Reminded me of drinking bud light with lime or something. Thought since I like IPA beer, this might be a decent whiskey. I was wrong.

2.

Spoiler:

Bird Dog Bourbon

Randomly walked into a hole in the wall mom and pop shop and impulsively bought this due to the cute dog on the label. When I got home found out I'd overpaid a ton on it (paid $40 on like a $25ish bottle iirc). The whiskey itself wasn't any better than like a $15 Evan Williams or something. This is the one that taught me to research before I buy.

1.

Spoiler:

Suntory Toki

This one is just flat out disgusting, imo. Super strong metallic, tinny note that is impossible to ignore. No idea why this one gets such good reviews. Taste is just subjective I suppose.

Honorable Mention:

Spoiler:

Jack Daniels Honey

Hands down the most disgusting liquor I have ever drank. Sickeningly sweet. Doesn't make the top 3 only because I bought it as a 50mL just to try so wasn't stuck with a bottle of it.

^^Had that Jameson IPA caskmates at a Jameson pregame party area in the parking lot of Reliant stadium in Houston before a football game. Had it after like six tailgate beers from a plastic cup but thought it was ok. Wouldn’t buy it but it wouldn’t say no if someone offered a glass. Better than a lot of young craft whiskeys or even worst anything from TerrePURE. It’s two year old mystery sources whiskey aged using sonic technology. Not sure if sonic tech is just playing loud bass music in the warehouse. I bought a sample 50ML bottle for fun and yup it’s bad.

Also the Suntory whisky is fine, really boring but nothing wrong with it and would be happy to drink if someone offered it.

Lastly I would even count that JD honey as whiskey.

For all my European whisky peeps with Lidl’s, highly recommend this.

It’s mystery sourced single grain scotch, aged 20+ years. Got it for 40€ and my father-in-law said he perviously got it for 25€. Any barrel aged spirit aged this long for those prices is crazy.

My favorite whiskey review site likes the Lidl offerings.

https://malt-review.com/2015/11/12/l...-28-years-old/

Single grain, like single malt is Scotch from a single distillery. Single grain is whisky made with grains other than malt. It’s usually made in big whisky factories, in column stills in industrial parts of Glasgow or something. No picturesque Islay or Speyside countryside with touristy looking distilleries with nice looking copper pot stills. This is the stuff used to blend into your blended whiskies of 1.75L plastic bottles of Old Smuggler. That being said I’m always on the look out for any forgotten barrels from the corner of the warehouse that accidentally sat there for 20 years, which they forgot to put into paint varnish after a few years. I like these aged one off single grains. Almost paid over 100£ for a similar spec one from the Cadenheads shop in London.

Drinking out of the bottle would take away most of the point of whiskey for me - smell is such a big part of the experience and a tulip/snifter (preferably glencairn) glass is a must.

If you're really drinking half a bottle of 110 proof every day, that seems a bit insane to me (although it makes me feel a bit better about the amount I imbibe )

Although according to WaPo you're still not cracking the top 10% of Americans(!!).

Last years Stagg release. Distributer just sitting on these or the retailer or is Sazerac hanging on to them and just getting them out? Whole system is shady.

Jeebus, I've seen that Stagg @ $500 near me. What's the normal retail?

nice snag!

Supposed to be around $100.

So, yeah...I think I paid $120...

Re: last year's stagg. True story. DC is kinda the wild wild west when it comes to liquor sales. The story my guy told me, which is most likely true...distributor held some back for restaurants...covid happens...my local got some of allocation.

So when my local liquor store has a Pappy 15 for $1300, are they making like $1200 in pure profit?

That seems insane and/or illegal? Surely that has to run afoul of some price gouging laws or something.

Yeah, the whole situation is pretty ridic. The secondary market for bourbon, as likely everybody here knows, has been insane for last decade or so. Buffalo trace refuses to do anything to combat secondary market and continues to keep retail super low for BTAC and Van Winkle (as opposed to the Willett approach to retail price more inline with demand). This results in a lot of hassle for retailers...how do they manage highly allocated items? By the letter of the law, if they mark them up, they're supposed to lose future allocations, but that doesn't happen super often as far as I can tell.

So some retailers have gotten tired of having a billion calls to see if they van Winkle/whatever at retail so people can immediately flip the bottle for 10-20x. And decided to price at or near secondary market value. Some retailers just save bottles for good customers, and some run lotteries.

I don't know what the right approach is, and I'm not a retailer, but I *do* have some sympathy with the spot they're put in here.

Interesting.

Admittedly, as a retailer it'd be pretty hard to resist the temptation to cash in in that spot. I'm guessing there's a lot of "selling" of bottles at retail to other shops for them to flip in exchange for a cut.

I guess when you get into stuff like 15 and 20 year old whiskeys, there's just no way for a producer to increase production and meet demand in any timely manner when demand goes through the roof (which I think is what's also happened wrt Japanese whiskies like Yamazaki 12, Hibiki, etc?)

The internet seems to think that BT doesn't care to raise the price on their end because those couple of bottles of pappy they allocate are seen as a reward for retailers buying cases and cases of all their other stuff.

Your last sentence I think hits the nail on the head. BTAC and other stuff is seen as reward for buying cases of Fireball and vodka and other crap. Those highly regarded bottles from BT would lose some its allure if they raised prices and it‘s more profitable for BT to use is a requirement to allow them unload other bottles.

Kind of the equivalent of someone putting a picture of a rare steak in the vegan thread? Or maybe the opposite I guess someone posting about great alcohol in the quitting alcohol thread?

Picked up a few bottles this month.

Both of these are really good, first time I have had the small batch select, really enjoy the carmely spiciness and just the right amount of heat.

Haven't cracked this one open yet, but the bottle is beautiful.

You won't find lesser price for wine anywhere else.

Lot more options in that price range for wine.
i totally agree with you buddy. I think wine is way too much expensive nowadays. Good wine is only something rich can afford X"D. it has become a luxury
