Yeah give Larceny a go it’s under $30 so you’re not taking a big risk.

I like the Makers Mark private selections or RC6.

I prefer this over the standard Weller products like Special Reserve/Antique and 12 year. It’s more expensive but I’m guessing much easier to find and actually much cheaper than what idiots are paying for Weller on the secondary market.

Thanks guys, just picked up a bottle of Larceny today at my local shop. The 1L was only $30. The only fancy Maker's I saw was some barrel proof one.

The shop also just got a bunch of Wee Beasties! However they were priced at $45 to the 10's $50 which seemed to make no sense.

Your link inspired me to look around online at bourbon mashbills. Unsurprisingly Buffalo Trace, my go to daily drinker for Bourbon is an undisclosed but low rye of <10%. Also no surprise a Bourbon I don't really like, Woodford, was at 18%. Shockingly however, Four Roses Small Batch, which I thought was ok, is a blend of 20% and 35% rye whiskys. I remember finding it super sweet, so I guess the sweetness takes the edge off the rye?

Not a bad little dram. First impression was really sweet/caramelly, but then it sort of rounded off a bit after I let it breathe for a while. Don't have any on hand, but it seems a bit more flavorful than I remember the Maker's? A perfectly fine $30 sippin whiskey.

Cheers

Yeah if you come into it with the right expectations of as you stated a $30 whiskey it’s not bad. See if you pick up any mint. I picked this up on the OlD Fitzgerald version that this replaces but it was generally younger.

I really liked Wee Beestie but no way I’m buying it for $5 less than the 10. Wee is around $35 here vs. $50 for 10. I think I really like young peated whiskys.

Rye is supposed to add more spice but in my experience rye whiskey can often be
Quite sweet to my taste. For instance I like Buffalo Trace and Weller but find Sazerac rye to be much too sweet.

If you like low rye bourbon give Jim Beam variations a try. This prohibition release is great at only 86 proof and non chill filtered, tons of great classic bourbon flavors.

If you can’t find the below see if you can get there new limited release Old Tub which is similar but 100 proof bottled in bond.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not really a bourbon guy in general, but I do like to keep a bottle or two on hand for a changeup when I'm in the mood. Unfortunately we don't seem to get near the variety of Bourbon up here as I see posted from people down in Kentucky/Texas, etc. Another one besides Weller I've wanted to try but have never even seen is Old Ezra 7.

And super jealous of your Beastie pricing. I would make it a daily drinker, alongside Monkey Shoulder, at that price. No idea what the difference between old and young peat is. Might have to buy a bottle to find out.

Old and young peat just meaning that Wee Beastie at 5 years is a young peated whisky.

Oh just that you I think with younger peated whisky you get more the peat flavor and less of the impact of the barrel influence which I enjoy, in moderation.

Are you in Canada? I’d kill for one of these Alberta Premium Cask Strength 100% rye whiskies.

That along with Lot 40 Cask Strength would be instant buys. I’d even buy the regular Alberta Premium if I couldn’t find these. It was Trailer Park Supervisor Mr. Lahey’s favorite, RIP. If I ever make it back into Ontario I’m stopping into the first LCBO and picking up a bottle.

Got my yearly call from my local to pick up a bottle of Elmer T. Lee. Up from $30 to $32.80 but still a steal to what taters are paying on the secondary for this. Very nice easy sipping whisky but not that complex and nowhere near worth the prices fools are paying on secondary.

Elmer t Lee has been a long time favorite of mine. Sad that it's such a pain in the ass to get for last 5 years.

In NY, unfortunately for my whiskey habit. I do prefer the heavy meaty peats of the Ardbegs as opposed to the more delicate nuanced Lag 16.

Shamed to admit the only Canadian I've ever tried is Crown. Only made the switch from beer to whiskey ~2 years ago. So much to explore!

Ahh, are you in NYC? Some great selection obviously but yeah also higher pricing. I know in Western NY pricing isn’t much worst than Texas and if you want bourbon other than Buffalo Trace products like Weller the selection and variety was better.

If you’re not in Canada I wouldn’t bother with Canadian. It’s pretty soft and boring. I think it’s on purpose as I think Canadian whisky became big during prohibition and people wanted something that would mix easily.

Canadian rye is good though if you can find it in it’s pure form which is like 90% rye. Try Lot 40 if interested.

Which one? Try that harvest rye.

Battle of entry level offerings from almost all the Islay distilleries that do peated whisky.

Crazy that I avoid these lovely peated seaside whiskies for so long. There all good but I think Bruichladdich is my favorite. Ardbeg is in a way the best as it’s my second favorite and at least $15-$20 cheaper than the others.

Who knew cooking malt in fertilizer would taste so good.

Nice! Islays are by far my favorite (although I'm not necessarily always in the mood for one).

Coincidentally was at Total Wine today and was torn between the Port Charlotte, Springbank 10 and the Uigeadail. Went with the Oogie in the end; go with what you know you love I guess.

Personally I'd go Ardbeg~~>Laphroaig~~>Lagavulin. Lag seems less in your face and more along the lines of a Talisker/Oban type offering. If younger = peatier, I guess that might be the extra 6 years toning the peat down a bit?

Never tried Bowmore/Caol Ila/Bunna. Still have yet to try a Bruichladdi, though they seem to get universally rave reviews.

Also picked up a bottle of Buchanan's today for $29 and was surprised by the pleasant smoke. It's like a Johnnie Black for $10 less.

lag 16 is my favorite under 100 whisky and i would take that every time vs the lineup you have there Nit.

I am a caol ila fan as well and their 18 y/o is spectacular but i can never find it. I find their offerings to be more smooth and less punch you in the face with smoke compared to the laphroig or ardbeg offerings. ITs not to say i dont like those as the ugiedal is another favorite of mine, just a different experience

How much whisky do you drink in one sitting? Is it messed up to pour a glass of four shots with ice once in a while and just sip over 2 hrs? I just wonder if this is ok or degen? I don’t drink on a daily basis and tend to drink on weekend so I honestly don’t see anything wrong with it.

I typically drink 2 or 3 glasses neat of roughly the amount you see in the pic I posted above. I'm guessing that's roughly ~2 shots a pour maybe? That's drunk over the course of the entire evening. I've found that I tend to pour much heavier when it's a rocks glass than a glencairn.

I used to basically only drink fri/sat nights, but since COVID I've been drinking much more frequently. Maybe 5x per week.

I'm in the middle of a self-imposed dry week atm. Just want to make sure nothing gets out of hand.

Having four drinks over 2hrs isn’t degen but having one pour of four drinks and having it over two hours is.

Ha I kid obviously no difference. Foobar has the right approach. What you feel comfortable with.

I saw this and was like uh, I drink more than that...

I than saw your pours and realized I’m probably pouring 1/2 to 1/3 what your pouring per drink. I think in the UK a pour of whiskey is 25-30 ML, roughly half a shot glass. In the US it’s I think 1 to 1.5 oz which is probably to 2/3rd to 1 shot glass.

I personally like the process of pouring more often, the uncorking/unscrewing, trying not to spill. I also feel I get a better scent, can nose it better and it tastes better when there’s less. Probably silly and all in my head.

I just broke out the baby's bottle to measure my pours with water (for science!). Turns out my pours are usually ~2.5oz, which is a bit less than 2 shots.

Google says U.S. standard is 1.5oz shot, 2oz neat pour, 3oz double. 25mL is half of those little sample size bottles? Those are some tiny pours! The advantage there is probably you get to drink 4~5 different whiskys in a night compared to my 2~3.

And even if it's just in your head, you should keep doing it as long as you believe it to be so. If we convince our brain that it makes a difference, our brain actually does make it taste better for us.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/b...-tastes-better

I think there's a lot of subjectivity involved even with the same whiskey just tasting different between your own first/second/third tastings of it depending on all sorts of things like mood, what you ate recently, etc.
