Inner Bootworks at Stowe is my favorite boot shop, but I doubt it's worth the drive up there to just buy boots. but if you feel like going away for the weekend anytime soon to go skiing, head up there.

re: ski's, I don't think it matter nearly as much as boots, and have little problem buying them sight unseen/untried. I've bought my last couple from Sierra Trading Post. you can find coupons online and get some sweet deals.

edit: the ones you linked to are fine as well. but I don't think you should plan on buying skiis for just a season or 2. especially if you don't ski that much, you can get 4-5, or more, seasons out of a good pair of skis (it's really about "days skiied" not "age"). I think it's better to spend $50 more on something you'll grow into (like the Rossi b78's) instead of something ok for now (b74's)

i am in thailand atm but am thinking of heading out there for 2-3 months from late june. Anybody know the best places/resorts to go?

last week TeeJay, Sponger, thatpfunk, and I hit Whistler and we had a blast. On the last day we rented a heli and hit the backcountry, the powder was sick. I'll post pics later but right now I'm scarfing down breakfast before hitting Baldface (www.baldface.net) for the week, anyone been there? Will TR when I get back.

Got to the trailhead (9800ft) at about 4am today. We skinned up 4.5 miles to 12,500' and saw our goal:



1.5 miles away and 1,500' vertical left.

So many sick looking lines but we wanted the classic Dead Dog couloir, the one off the right side of the summit. And then my buddy said he was done. He didn't have anything left. Dissapointing but the high winds and hurting knee lessened the blow. Next time we will camp around where we turned back and make it a 2 day approach, or not be out of shape weekend warriors.

Spent two days on the mountain this weekend and developed a nice goggle-shaped sunburn.

Anyone 6' tall and ride a 58? I'm wondering how wide my stance should be... I have my bindings at +9/-9 and go down the mountain reg/switch.. but I looked at some pictures my GF took and in most of them I look like I'm standing straight up. In one picture it appears like my knees are pointing in. Could that be bad? I felt fine going down and only fell a few times.. each time trying to switch edges (I'm solid on my heel side but sketchy on my toe side)

Nice pics, I really like Homewood. Usually no crowds whatsoever to speak off and some really solid tree skiing. On good powder days you can get fresh tracks all day long. Only downside is that the one lift that takes you the furthest up is so damn slow.

Skier5, those are some sweet skis, heard lots of good things about the Pontoons. How much those set you back?

750 euros with bindings and special breaks afterlike 20% off, but since I'm in europe it's prolly still more than you would pay in the states (IE saw the skis online for $600ish)

I skied on them for one day and we had a foot+ of powder (and prolly a lot more) and they're pretty ****in awesome. They float great and turn easy (though you can nose dive em unlike what some of the reviews say - yes I found out the hard way), but they aren't too great on groomed runs or anything. I'll have to give them a try on a non powder day, but I imagine I'll prefer my regular skis to these on a day where I won't be skiing a lot of powder.

I'm looking into getting season passes for next season... how is Northstar and Sierra? Seems like a great deal for $230.
I'm going to try and get classes only on MW or TTh during the winter, so I wouldn't mind a midweek pass. Sugar Bowl is $280.

The only two mountains I've been on are Boreal and Dodge Ridge, so I'm open to suggestions.

depends on how good you are/what you like. for experts northstar and sierra are two of the worst mountains in tahoe. if you are an intermediate tho you might like northstar. otherwise i would recommend alpine meadows or kirkwood for cheap season passes at good areas.

I'm a beginning rider, so I'd like a mountain with easy, long runs. I want a place that's easy to get to from Sac and not packed (but I guess most places won't be midweek). I would also like the pass to be <$300 for 21 year old college students.

Kirkwood was $280 last year for college students, so I'll consider that.

Also, since this is my first year.... when do the mountains usually close?

Alpine Meadows is my absolute most favorite mountain in the world with a great variety of trails and wide open spaces. The terrain park is also incredible if that's your thing. Northstar is a ******' zoo. When I was at Sierra it was absolutely dumping and pretty fun, but I haven't spent any extended amount of time there.

I wish I was closer to Tahoe...but then I wouldn't be in San Diego and that would also suck. Bah.

I wouldn't even bother taking them out on a non powder day. You already know they aren't going to ski as well as a traditionally side cut and camber ski (pontoons have rocker dont they?) on hardpack.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of reverse sidecut reverse camber skis myself. How much better than a standard wide waisted ski did the 'toons ski the pow? And most importantly, were they more fun in the pow?

yah pontoons have a rocker and when i said non powder day i meant perhaps a day or two after a power day or some other day where you will get some turns in but could be stuck skiing a lot of skied out **** too.

I've never skied another fat ski before and my main ski is a 178 k2 public enemy right now which i think is 80-85 under the waist. and the pontoons were def much, much better than those and just floated and allowed you to fly down the hill. they were easy to turn too (i understand that's why the tails are smaller) if that's an issue with fat skis usually.

I know this was posted a month and a half ago, but is anyone else amazed and bewildered by this picture? I mean, explain to me what's going on here, nubs. It looks like he's grinding a tree trunk.

Solids, it's a pretty standard but very cool 'bust through the trees off a small drop' shot. You just take enough speed and giver through the branches and get a cool photo as a result.
