Bali, particularly Kuta.
Probably cat.2, but I think a case for cat.1 can be made.
Just a wasteland of tourists destroying what should be a beautiful tropical island - water undrinkable, food potentially lethal (and guaranteed to add speed to anyone in a bid to find a usable ****house) and locals trying to rip you off with some of the crappiest merchandise available at outstanding markups. Beer is cheap (although nasty), so there is something.
Worst of it is my wife loves it and drags me & the kids there every chance she gets, and I'm too weak to tell her to piss off.
Sad really.

Tell her the entire island is run by the Indonesian mafia, that usually does the trick.

+1 to Bali.

Cumberland, Maryland - Here are some highlights from wikipedia.

The Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area is one of the poorest in the United States, ranking 305th out of 318 metropolitan areas in per capita income.[1]

The population of the city has continued to decline since 1990, with the 2010 census population of 20,859 the lowest since the 1900 census.

It was once Maryland's second largest city.

I went to school near there, it was terrible... nothing to do, and nothing even remotely close to do. Trips to walmart were an event.

No. Not only are some parts of it incredible, it is becoming increasingly gentrified, so even the crappy parts are fewer and smaller.

^^^obv i am kinda biased (although i'm not from baltimore, i have lived here for 6 years or so). I was with you when i first moved here thought it was just an overall terrible city. Since then, it has slowly but surely grown on me. It really is not that bad, stay away from certain parts (just like ANY city) and you will be fine and most likely have a great time.

Alberta is a ****hole. Sorry Edmonton and Calgary but not even your cheaper booze can make me hang out there. Also, if Winnipeg, Manitoba were toilet paper I wouldn't wipe my ass with it.
Totally agree with most of this. Funny how you forgot the worst city in all of Canada when it comes to the winter. Oh nevermind, its right over there in your location. I guess its nice the 2 days it doesnt pour rain.

um no. With the exception of the northern residential parts of town, you are likely to encounter someone pissing on your sidewalk (federal hill area) or a group of downtrodden crackers who don't like you and will jump you if you haven't lived in the neighborhood for at least two generations (locust point). Or mugging you and running back to the projects (Little Italy, Fells Point). Guess that leaves Canton?

Also, DC generally ok.

Vancouver has the worst winter weather in Canada? Am I correct in guessing you have never been to Saskatchewan?

I have spent time in the winter of Saskatchewan. I mean its obviously a matter of opinion but ill take -20 and sunny for 5 months any day over 4 degrees, pouring rain, all day every day. Going a month straight without seeing the sun to me is awful, but obviously to each their own.

Springfield, MA is an absolute sh** hole and unfortunately I reside in a suburb of it.

Yes, with those conditions, Saskatchewan is better, but Sask has some -40 quite often, sometimes for weeks at a time. -40 is just really nasty.

Get bent, the Okanagan is gods country. Okanagan > Vancouver, i agree on your views of Manitoba however.

Useful thread. I value your first hand observations.

Forbes did an article on America's 20 Most Miserable Cities which they claim are
  • Cleveland, OH
  • Stockton, CA
  • Memphis, TN
  • Detroit, MI
  • Flint, MI
  • Miami, FL
  • St. Louis, MO
  • Buffalo, NY
  • Canton, OH
  • Chicago, IL
  • Modesto, CA
  • Akron, OH
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Rockford, IL
  • Toledo, OH
  • New York, NY
  • Sacramento, CA
  • Youngstown, OH
  • Gary, IN
  • Philadelphia, PA

but I agree that the international list is even sh*tier.

And Popular Science rated The World's Dirtiest Cities

Milan, Italy
Norilsk, Russia
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Mexico City, Mexico
Dakar, Senegal
Sumgayit, Azerbaijan
Linfen, China

Can't believe NY hadn't been mentioned yet.

Anywhere people have to do this qualifies as a sh*thole:

This from Camden, NJ

I actually like a remarkably high percentage of the places named in this thread, a handful of which are among my very favorite places. You folks in the sticks have some strange ideas.

All that being said, I hope the guy who has to do all the Google street view driving in south Arizona is paid well, he deserves it.

Having traveled through much of America, I can +1 to a lot of these sh*tholes, and add one or two of my own.

+1 Million to Camden, New Jersey. For a while there it had passed Detroit as the murder capital of the US. One night after a concert at the Blockbuster/Sony/whatever it is now Center I took a wrong turn and ended up in Camden. I'm not one to roll up my windows and lock the doors, but holy sh*thole.

+1 to Memphis, though I hate to say it. Seems like it could be a really cool city if the people would take the initiative to clean it up a little. But it's just a dump. Same could be said for St. Louis.

+1 to anything in Ohio.

+1 to Baltimore. Anything outside of the Inner Harbor is just god-awful.

+1 to Oakland. You'd think that maybe San Francisco or Berkeley would rub off a little charm on this dingy sh*thole, but you'd be wrong.

Must add:

Pretty much all Island Resorts. Think about it: if the people who live there can really only get minimum wage catering to drunk, obnoxious tourists, their quality of and outlook on life can't be high. Next time you go to the Bahamas or Puerto Rico take a walk around outside the resort area. Stray dogs, homeless people living out of shopping carts, needles everywhere, the works. Sad really.

Ely. Ewww. If Reno is ghetto, Ely must be....?

Texarkana. Just because you weren't creative enough to name your city after something besides the states it borders.

And the best for last: The Tenderloin District in San Francisco. Yes, pretty much every other part of the city is beautiful, which makes this little 50 sq. block pocket of sh*tholery even more sh*tty. I mean, c'mon, you name your neighborhood after a cut of meat, you're bound to be the unwanted bastard child of Nob Hill.

Also, not really getting the hate for Philly? Sure there are sh*tty areas, but the city as a whole comes nowhere near sh*thole status.

Now this has to stop. The tenderloin is one of the greatest places I've ever been. Somehow, right in the center of the most gentrified city on earth, is this 10 block area which is stuck in some kind of 1970s crime movie time warp. I once actually stayed at the YMCA there for a couple nights and there were gangs of bums having bottle fights in the streets, and people in bell-bottoms were trying to sell me drugs that I had never heard of before! Utterly magnificent.
