Riding a bicycle in a notorious ghetto seems...like a poor choice. I look forward to your TR.

You're almost certainly less likely to get shot.

Have Myrtle Beach, SC been nominated? That place is depressing as ****. The main drag is almost literally endless rotting mini-golf courses and those "beachwear" shops with fading posters and towels in the windows.

The area around Nebraska Ave in Tampa (if you type 'Nebraska Ave' in google 'Nebraska Ave prostitution' is the first suggestion). Many motels rent by the hour. Although I haven't been back in a long time so it may have been gentrified.

I can easily blend in with the populance; I'll be fine. I've ridden through some of Phillies worst slums and have been... impressed? What an ungodly, lawless mess.

Haha, Nebraska ave gentrify my fat ass. It's the same as it ever was, crackheads and transvestite prostitutes galore.

Camden then Reading.

Camden makes Trenton look like Christchurch.

I found a lot of the suggestions quite bizarre.

For example, Montreal is probably my favorite city in North America and someone suggested that. But I find the culture fascinating, the mix of French/English, one of the few NA cities with a well preserved historical neighbourhood (vieux-Montreal), incredible nightlife, solid food, etc.

Someone mentioned Lyon, and I lived there for over a year and would say it's actually underrated as far as Europe goes b/c it's not usually on people's travel radar. But the food is amazing, there are some cool sites/lots of history, lots of different areas for nightlife. However, I think they pumped a ton of money into riverfront and other projects recently so it could have been a lot different in 2012 when some people were mentioning that. Obviously the "France/Europe is old and dirty" type traveler is probably gonna hate it that. Having visited most of France, I think there are tons of great cities, with Marseille, Saint-Étienne, and Nancy being the closest to ****holes.

Oh and someone mentioned Barcelona which is probably the biggest lol as it's an incredible city.

Cities like Brussels, Milan, Bratislava, while a bit stale and boring, I wouldn't necessarily call ****holes.

I interpreted the instructions as being two categories: BFE places that might've once had something going for them and don't any more, and bigger cities that have become bad.

In the nowheresville category:

Superior, WI: Where I grew up. Used to be an important port and railhead for getting things to the ships. A blue-collar city, but there was work and some businesses.

Doesn't seem to be any industry any more except for cheap bars lining Tower Avenue. Mostly an aging population just living out their days.

On the plus side, it's winter five months/year.

Port Arthur, TX: Superior with palm trees.

Eastern Colorado: Went on a trip out there a couple summers ago to make sure there's nothing to look at. I was right.

It was quite depressing going through these towns. I imagine they once had businesses to support the big farms. Now their main streets are empty storefronts with dilapidated buildings.

All the little towns along US 6, US 50 or I-80 across Nevada.

In the big city category:

Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, Wilmington DE all seemed pretty rough as I passed through. I could've just been in not great spots.

San Jose, Costa Rica seemed pretty bad as mentioned earlier. The rest of the country was great.

most places that rely on extraction of resources end up going downhill.

and places where the workers all have the same types of jobs.

Its impossible to walk around Seattle, however. The homeless there will just not stop bothering you for food and money. They'll throw their arm around you like a long lost friend and EXPECT something handed over. They will pound your car until you finally roll the window down, then immediately launch into the biggest sob story of how they ended up where they are.

The Whole Foods there is hilarious . . . the exit lane has a mile long line of homeless . . . they know every damn car coming out has either 1) food or 2) change. Usually both.

Outside of that, LOL @ Seattle being a **** hole.
This post proves that many people in the US were living in an alternate reality long before Trump was elected.

I've spent a lot of time in Seattle. For sure, there are a lot of homeless people in Seattle who are on the less sympathetic end of the spectrum. (In other words, Seattle has a disproportionately high percentage of homeless 20 somethings who look like they grew up in the suburbs and made a conscious choice to develop a smack habit because they thought it would turn them into an artist or a rock star.) But whatever. They don't chase you around. They don't hug you. They don't beat on your car. Sure, something like that can happen very occasionally in any large US city. But it is simply a flat out lie to say that you can't walk around Seattle without being harassed constantly by homeless people.

The people who nominated Seattle as a ****hole are even more delusional.

i live in seattle and in a downtown area that is dead center between 4 homeless shelters. There are a lot of bums, and most of them will ask you for change, but if you just say "I dont have any" they leave you alone. LOL at saying they are aggressive, try hanging out in Chicago, or in a real ****hole like Gary Indiana or Houston.

I will 2nd your East St. Louis & put it at the top of American cities. It isn't in MO though, it is in ILL. It is common to think it is in MO though.

The FBI has dubbed it “the nation’s most dangerous city”; the homicide rate is an alarming 17 times the national average.

The above sentence was taken from:

Google East St. Louis & read about this nightmare of a city.

I lived in a suburb of St. Louis, Mo when going to elementary school....& you always heard that you never go there day or night!

It has a major airport , ports , Penn station and path that connects you to NYC in under 35-40 minutes , a hockey team , an mls team two miles away, it has a district full of Brazilian and Portuguese women that will make your neck break from looking back (the ironbound) , restaurants galore , from churrascerias , great Spaniard and Italian food , Haitian/Jamaican etc etc etc. I'm sure I'm in the minority here on many levels , but Newark is not a ****hole imo

well, i view it differently, but i grew up in ****ty back then , nyc, and njersey .
I understand though, because that's what i think whenever i pass through most rural areas. it's about what you grow up around .

rural areas yes they have degenerated to slums in many spots. but rural areas located in tourist areas are the best of both worlds in my book as you get the nature and smart people and culture as well.
