Fun trip report, thanks for sharing ^

-----

French Laundry wildly exceeded my expectations. French isn't one of my favorite cuisines, but given how much everyone raves about it, felt like a thing to try. So when a non Japanese meal became my new #1 all time, I was pretty surprised.

Loved the menu. Oysters and pearls were my favorite course but really everything was wonderful. The service was "only" very good, but not in a way that detracted from the experience. The only negative thing I would say is having the cheapest whiskey on the menu as a $50 version of Wild Turkey was a bit obnoxious, since I already spent $600/head on a meal. But still think it was completely spectacular experience that I'd recommend a major foodie try for a special occasion. Took some friends for their wedding present and it was a obviously a huge hit.

The dessert plate at the end was special, even compared to other fine dining.

Dan,

I agree with French laundry being amazing and a worthwhile special occasion trip for a foodie. But the last time I went (about 2 years ago), I found two things pretty annoying. One was their wine markup compared to other high-end Bay Area places. And the thing that really annoyed me was the number of supplements/surcharges on the menu. But yeah, it’s great.

Those were two of the lasting impressions I took from my first visit to TFL in 2006: the asinine wine markup (I had a few of the bottles on the list and they were all coming in at ~5x retail) and the supplements that I felt somehow compelled to get.

TFL and Keller have earned their place in the pantheon but in 2019 I'd much rather go to Single Thread or Saison. But it's entirely possible I'm jaded.

Diablo and other locals,

Do you have a recommendation for a brunch spot in the Mission? Not Lolo, since the wife an I have already been there and we'd like to try somewhere new.

Going to SF next week and so far I have reservations for Sushi Hon and Alcatraz at Night tour. I think we'll hit Tadich for dinner and Rickhouse for drinks one night, and get lunch at City Beer store too. On the latter, do you know if we can find Tilquin there and drink it at their tasting bar while getting some food?

ETA: Actually, I just saw this picture so that answers part of my last question!

Eat some seafood at sabella and lottore at wharf. Bubba Gump shrimp at Pier 39, Knockout pizza is good spot too

ET,

I really like mission beach cafe. Foreign cinema/lazslo is great. Pork store cafe for more homey/diner style brunch. But there are tons of great spots for brunch in the mission.

Cocktail places I haven’t been to yet but have heard great things about and want to go soon: beehive and true laurel, both in the mission.

Tadich is nothing special imo. But it’s totally fine and a sorta kitschy old school dining experience.

CBS often has Tilquin, and you can drink anything from the store at the bar.

Diablo,

Thanks. I made reservations for Foreign Cinema. We've been there for dinner and the wife loved it, so I don't mind going back for brunch this time.

Tadich was a recommendation from a wife's friend. This thread's recommendations are way better.

Please review if you do this! Their food always looks good on Instagram but I've never actually eaten there.

I was just at True Laurel for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed by their food.

I was just at true laurel for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was really impressed with the food. For a bar with only small plates I thought the food was phenomenal. Drinks were okay but I prefer beer most of the time so trick dog would be my preference for just drinks

JL,

Was there a wait when you went there? If so, how long?

Seems like their menu is pretty small, what were the highlights?

True Laurel is awesome, Lazy Bear crew never misses.

When I was there there was no wait but we had a group of about 20 and had pre-booked something (a small holiday event for a team at work). Here was our prepped menu:

Bar Nuts - Didn't try (I was late)

Cacio E Pepe Chicaharrones - Not much Cacio e pepe flavor to me but delicious nonetheless

Raw Oysters - Didn't try (have avoided oysters since getting sick at Novella last year), well received by those who ate them

Cauliflower Salad - really excellent, well seasoned and great blend of flavors

Crispy Mushrooms - IMO a must order. Great replacement for french fries / onion rings. These blew me away and the dip was excellent

Loaded baked potato - Tasty and well done, but not wouldn't go out of my way to order again unless in the mood for cheesy broccoli

Pumpkin Al pastor - Fantastic and delicious. Incredible amount of flavor, pumpkin cooked perfectly to have enough chew to be 'meaty'. Worth trying for sure

TL Patty Melt - I appreciated the execution and presentation of this, but did not like the beef flavor. Reminded me of buying ground beef in a tube from discount grocers (slightly sour, wet socks smell/taste). Not sure if it was a bad night or what. Would prob give it one more chance and then not order again if it was the same issue. Very generously salted though, which I appreciated

Cookies - The main disappointment of the night. These were not good and baked in a weird stick type of shape.

Regarding drinks:
Mai-o-mai was the top drink for the group. Thought the coffee rum float was an interesting flavor and contrast
In the Pines, enjoyed this but ultimately switched to beer. I'm not really a new-age cocktail person.

Looking over this list there was a decent amount I didn't love but I still came away with a really good impression of the place which tells you how much I liked the cauliflower, mushrooms and pumpkin. If I headed back with the same menu I'd get those three and try the octopus and beef cheek or pork roast.

Cool, thanks for the info

Not sure your favorite items are on my sweet spot (not a fan of cauliflower and pumpkin), but I'll keep it in mind as an alternative for one of the dinners.

I like http://www.lemaraisbakery.com/ , good cafe with all the typical brunch options. (Technically the Castro and not Mission, but it's very close, 18th and Sanchez)

Can eat healthy or get a wonderful pastry. Have never had a big wait time, even on weekends.

When they emailed me about the pairing, they suggested $500/head. I asked what they could do for $150/head and I was very happy with the result.

Hopefully this isn’t too off topic, but I’m planning a trip out to Carson City to see some family. The wife and I want to fly into San Fran or Santa Rosa and spend 3 days in wine country. Any suggestions on where to go for fun 3 days of wine/beer. Would like to settle in somewhere and bike around.

what do the two of you like to drink? If you are staying in Santa Rosa, I would recommend that you focus on wineries around the 101-ish as it's easy to not realize that 1) Sonoma county is ****ing huge and 2) that wineries in and around the town of Sonoma will be a good 30-45 minutes away from Santa Rosa. I don't live in SF, but I'm out there frequently for work and would be more than happy to help in whatever ways I can

I honestly have no idea where we should even stay. Less concerned with drinking specific styles, more concerned with hitting up unique places with good atmosphere.

I'm sure others know way more about wine than I, but since you mentioned beer I'll go with the obvious and say you should stop by Russian River. It's really a fun and pretty historic spot for craft beer, even if it's been eclipsed by other Northern California breweries.

Other than that I'd probably get out of Santa Rosa. I've had a couple fun afternoons drinking at Taps in Petaluma, which has a nice draft list.

No specific bar recommendations, but my favorite city in wine country is Healdsburg (skip Bear Republic though, it's mediocre), with probably Calistoga second and Sonoma third. I asked about beer places in Sonoma in this thread a while back and got some good feedback, you may want to search for that.

I was actually looking at Healdsburg today. If you get some time, could you tell me a little more about it and why it's your favorite?
