Prime tomahawk bone-in ribeyes $13.99/lb, caps and eyes $18.99/lb.

So good:

This weekend they have some great looking prime tri-tip for $7.99/lb.

This thread is for SF Bay Area stuff, so definitely post non-city stuff as well.

Crafty Fox is great. I haven't eaten there, but always a great tap list.

I haven't been to Standard Deviant, their beer list sounded kinda boring to me. Thanks for the review, now I don't have to bother checking it out.

Bare Bottle is OK, but I wouldn't make a trip there unless you have kids. It's a great space and very family friendly, but the beer is only so-so. Many better places to visit in the city and east bay. For breweries in SF, Cellarmaker (for IPAs and stouts) and Almanac (for sours) are at the top of my list. Fieldwork and Rare Barrel in the East Bay. Also TONS of beer bars in SF with consistently amazing lists - City Beer Store and Beer Basement my current two favorites.

FYI there's also currently some SF beer week chat in the EDF Beer thread.
Thanks! The beer week discussion in the other thread looked great. I was in LA for half of beer week but i want to make sure to stick around in 2019. Had an awesome time at the events I did go to.

I'll check out City Beer and Beer Basement for sure. I already love Cellarmaker. Fieldwork beer is amazing; I went to their biergarten in Monterey and was disappointed, at 9:30 on Saturday night most of the good stuff was already tapped out. However, I'm sure the original one in Berkeley is much better.

Joe,

Bummer. I go to Fieldwork Berkeley prob a couple times a month, and I can't remember anything on the draft list not being available. Also, looks like the Monterey and San Mateo lists suck compared to Berkeley and the other ones. Coconut Milk and Eliza are my two favorite from the current list, and El Cortez (new) sounds great - none of those available at Monterey.

Hey, so the plan is to check out Saratoga our first night on El D's recommendation. Will have some time to bum around before dinner, and was thinking of checking out the Tenderloin District. Is the Luggage Store/Tenderloin Forest worth checking out? Anything else in that district I should know about?

After dinner, would we just be able to stay in that area for bars? Will most likely be staying at Hotel Vitale

Hoping to get motivated enough for a TR after--but I'm pretty lazy.

Edit: For the second night the plan is to hit up Chinatown, any reco's for food, bars, things to see in the area welcomed

Thanks in advance

Auralex,

Tenderloin is sorta like skid row in sf. Lots of homeless, drug dealing, prostitution, etc all over that area. So not an area that’s great for sightseeing or anything.

But lots of bars and restaurants in the area, ranging from old divey neighborhood places to fancy new hipster places.

Whitechapel
Beer basement
Black cat
Whiskey thieves

Are a few tenderloin bars I like. You could look up some of those if you have specific things in mind. Or you can just walk a block over from the Saratoga to Polk street, which is lined with bars and restaurants for blocks and blocks.

Awesome, thanks El D. Polk St. sounds like the better spot for after dinner.

I'll save the walking around/shopping for Mission District.

Aura,

Just turn right (north) on Polk and it’s like a half mile to a mile strip full of bars and restaurants. I highly recommend bob’s donuts!

Finally getting around to reviewing my dinner at Villon:

Best meal front to back I’ve had in my year in SF. GF and I shared 6 things.

The Outstanding

Hawaiian Bread
Gnudi

The Very Good

Venison (the chimi was different & superb)
Beets

The Good

Okinomiyaki

The OK

Octopus & Merguez

The desserts were both great but by that time we were stuffed. Will certainly be returning once the menu has changed.

Uh, chef-fy notes: Place should be getting a Michelin Star if it continues to work out the kinks. Small restaurant - 50 or so seats - should be consistently good. The chef has the best pedigree one can have (longtime exec sous at EMP) and it shows I think. All the food is still casual and accessible which I likeI wonder how much time he spends in the kitchen, I walk past it on the way to work and i usually see another guy running the kitchen.

Anyways, I haven’t been to a lot of the SF great restos yet but it’s easily the best meal I’ve had in the city. Technique and flavor all on point for every dish. Hopefully it wasn’t just an “on-night” as it was Valentine’s Day.

92/100

O,

I told you about that Hawaiian bread!

Glad you had a great dinner. I’ll make a point to go back and try the gnudi.

What are the other places you’ve really liked in SF so far?

Edit: just took a look at your earlier post and missed your tenderloin request. So many good divey/neighborhood/ethnic places there. I’ll make a new post soon with my favorites.

El D,

Thanks for doing the research on Fieldwork! I'll make a point to go to the one in Berkeley next time I play poker at Oaks- good to see it's much better than the crappy one in Monterey.

On the minus side, I'm surprised there's only one double IPA on tap. I love them, and I assumed that was Fieldwork's bread and butter since that's usually what they send out to the bars near me.

On the plus side, good selection of cans! First time I've seen Fieldwork beer in any other format than on tap. I'll be grabbing a bunch of those to bring home.

Joe,

Tap list is always changing and they usually have at least a couple of big IPAs on draft.

Cans often sell out fast, but they fill growlers and sell crowlers - 32oz cans.

Hey! Yeah the bread was perfect. I would go again just for that tbh.

Thanks a lot re: tenderloin. Fwiw I feel like I need to thank you on behalf of everyone who has come to this thread for advice. You are simply an awesome poster - thorough, extremely versed in many different topics, to the point, and so helpful. Your posts in this thread have been so appreciated from this SF noob. I'm aking the GF to Saratoga either tonight or tmrw as per your rec earlier in the thread btw, will report!

I've eaten at:

- Progress (above avg, nothing special though)

- Nopa and Nopalito - both awesome imo. I think they are great examples of well-run, consistent, great restaurants. I've gone multiple times and have never been disappointed.

- Gary Danko - very ok, good service. I feel like their Mich star is a lifetime achievement star rather than actual

- Kronnerburger (fantastic)

I worked for a bit at Lazy Bear so I ate a lot of the food there. It was all pretty good. Will prob eat there at some point.

- Zuni Cafe - solid. Had a great burger on focaccia (I'm really into burgers). Usually i don't go for "fancy" burgers so I was turned off by it being on focaccia but it was great.

- Elephant Sushi - VERY meh

- Moya - awesome Ethiopian. I love this place

- Perrenial - Was good, interesting menu and I love the enviro-friendly concept. Lacked a little in execution. This was when it was under the old chef who has since left.

- Chez Pannisse - had a really great meal here. I know it was enhanced by the fact that I knew I was eating there, but while it wasn't world-class, the food was simple and refined and I liked it. Had a great pea ravioli dish. What a beautiful restaurant....it felt like a cozy home.

- 4505 BBQ - I'm a big bbq fan and have been disappointed so far. Interestingly enough, I didn't like it that much the 3 times I went TO the restaurant (when I first moved to SF it was and maybe still is on Divis & I lived closeby), but the other night I had a hankering and got it off Caviar, and it was awesome. The pork shoulder is where it's at.

- Outerlands - before the gf and I made it official and moved in together downtown she lived in the outer sunset and this was close by. Um, it's a fun menu and it changes and obv has a great weekend beachy vibe. The food is kind of hit or miss imo...more hits than misses. Another spot for great bread. Those potatoes with aioli they have as a side are stellar.

- Trouble Coffee - I am a coffee lover and make my own at home and I LOVE their Elbow Grease bean.

There are more I"m prob forgetting.

As you can see I haven't hit a bunch of the destination restaurants. I worked for a bit at Per Se so although FL is obv on my list I've had a lot of keller's food and as it's more of an experience I'm waiting for that big occassion. I want to eat at:

State Bird (even tho the Progress made me less excited)
Trestle - this spot really interests me. Has anyone been?
Octavia
La Ciccia
Aster
Saison
Manresa
Atelier Crenn (I look forward to this more than any other I think - I'm worried about being disappointed. I love the woodsy, outdoorsy vibes)

I’ve spent a lot of time in Asia and worked for a good number of Asian chefs in recent years and I just find myself naturally shying away from super high end contemporary Asian places as of late. The flavors feel a bit tired for me. It’ll prob change as what I’m into changes but yeah for now it’s just not what I am looking for.

O, goof: Thanks for the kind words! I like checking out new places and enjoy hearing everyone else's feedback as well.

O - impressive chef pedigree, very cool!

I love Kronnerburger too. My favorite Bay Area burger.

BBQ - great BBQ simply doesn't exist in SF. There's some a little better in the East Bay, but nothing really great. Best I've had in the city is probably Cathead's on Folsom.

Re: places on your list:

State Bird (even tho the Progress made me less excited)
I've been twice and really enjoyed it. Not as great as the insane reviews, but def very good and creative.

Trestle - this spot really interests me. Has anyone been?
On my list to go too!

Octavia
Haven't been.

La Ciccia
Really good. Just simple, really tasty, well-executed food.

Aster
I've only had brunch there. It was fine, nothing special.

Saison
I've only been once, early on when it was like a $79 menu in a grungy space. Then it started racking up Michelin stars and price kept skyrocketing up. Haven't checked out the super high-end place it became.

Manresa
Only been once and enjoyed it a lot, but wasn't quite as blown away as the reviews. Definitely a great place though.

Atelier Crenn (I look forward to this more than any other I think - I'm worried about being disappointed. I love the woodsy, outdoorsy vibes)
You won't be disappointed. I've been here multiple times and loved it every time.

I have been to this, I thought it was absolutely fantastic. God if I ever work at Facebook I'm gonna weigh 250 in no time.

I also eat at Armadillo Willy's sometimes because it's right by where I work. I can't fully endorse it but if you are really hard up for some brisket it's good enough to scratch an itch.

Trip Report--Mar 1-4

Not sure if these TRs are welcomed, but wanted to share a few pictures and memories from quick trip to SF this past weekend.

Thursday, March 1. The birthday.

I've been with Anne for around two and a half years and for her last birthday I got drunk early (without her), picked a fight at dinner, and passed out on the couch.

This year I was determined to raise the bar.

So, when I got an email from Southwest a few weeks ago advertising cheap fares from LA to SF, I decided we'd go to SF for her birthday.

We'd talked about taking a trip to SF before, but never got around to it. Anne didn't know it, but part of the reason I was reluctant to make the trip was because of another girl...Laura. I had dated Laura for several years of my mid to late twenties. She was from Walnut Creek and we visited her home and SF often to be with her mother who was dying of cancer. We must've made ten trips between 2006-2008, and I hadn't been back since we split up.

In one of his stories, JD Salinger once wrote: "Probably for every man, there is at least one city that sooner or later turns into a girl....she was there, and she was the whole city, and that's that." And for me, Laura was San Francisco.

But time passes and even though the feelings never go away, they recede. So I booked our flights, packed our bags, and we flew to San Francisco last Thursday, March 1st. Anne's birthday.

We flew out of Burbank around noon, and the flight was empty. We got a whole row to ourselves.

I read a bit. I've been getting back into book collecting and picked up a first edition of Cathedral a few weeks back. Got through a couple of stories. One was good, one wasn't.

After fifty five minutes of flight time we landed in SFO and ordered a Lyft. I had booked us at Hotel Vitale, mainly due to location, so I punched that into the app and we headed downtown. Anne fell asleep again on my shoulder.

We stopped on the way to our hotel so Anne could run into a Lush store for a few bath bombs. She got a gift certificate for her birthday and she loves taking baths. It sounded like a good idea to me, so she ran into the store while I chatted with our driver about the difference between being a cab driver, driving for Uber and driving for Lyft--he had done all three. I also ran into a liquor store and grabbed a cheap bottle of wine.

We went to our room, which they were nice enough to upgrade from Full-King--City View, to Full King--Water view. We had a cool view of the Bay Bridge:

The concierge had also ordered some flowers for our room that were waiting for us when we walked in.

By this time it was about 4pm. We decided to kick back and use one of the bath bombs Anne had just picked up. It smelled like cardamom (so I was told) and turned the water black. Flecks of gold got everywhere, but we got in, drank the wine and talked. The wine wasn't very good.

(hard to tell, but the water's black. Anne brings candles whenever we stay in a hotel. They make her 'feel like she's home.'

We got out of the bath and I called Saratoga to make a reservation. We put some robes we found and headed to the rooftop terrace to have a smoke. The view was pretty good.

We headed back to our room to finish getting ready. A few minutes later we were in a car headed for the Saratoga.

We walked in and I was impressed by the layout. The bar was huge and full of whiskies. Unfortunately, the place is wildly popular and we were sat in between two other couples right next to the bar. I could barely hear anything she said, so I asked the server if she could move us. She frowned, then scampered off. Everything was booked. But, if we'd be willing to wait a few minutes, another table was about to leave and we could sit there when they did. I said that was fine and walked back to our table.

We ordered a couple of cocktails to sip on while we waited. I got a Gin Highball that I was impressed by, and Anne got some tequila-based cocktail that was OK. We were moved before we could finish them.

Next table was in a corner--the only place I ever feel comfortable--and I felt more relaxed. Anne went to the bathroom and I took a couple pictures.

I generally don't take pictures, even though I love photography. I warned Anne I'd be taking a lot this trip so I could make a trip report after. I only like candids with few exceptions, so most the pictures you'll see are candids. The bewildered or disinterested faces are the result of that.

We started with a Hamachi crudo dish that was amazing. You can see the remnants of the sauce on our plates here:

There was a young couple eating next to us that seemed to be on a first date. At one point, the guy got up to go to the bathroom and he took his beer with him. A little odd, sure, but their waitress (our waitress to) walked up to the girl and said:

"He took his beer?! What a weirdo, like, what does he think you're going to roofie him? (laughs). So strange..."

That kind of pissed me off. And sure enough, right when the poor guy got back his date asked him why the hell he did that.

I'm trying to remember all we got....I liked the chicken dish, Anne didn't care for it too much. We got a few other dishes to split, but nothing was as good as the hamachi crudo.

We were both kind of tired, but I wanted to check out Bob's Donuts so we decided to walk to Polk St. and check it out. It was sprinkling a little bit, but I didn't mind that.

About half way we stopped at a smoke shop so Anne could try to find this strange brand she likes. I took another picture:

Eventually we found Bob's. It was everything El D said it was. Apparently, they specialize in crumb donuts, which are my favorite. I ordered three of those and a glazed. Anne wanted an apple fritter.

It had started to rain a bit heavier, so we took a Lyft back to Vitale. I think it was around 1am when we finally got back to the room and fell asleep.

Day 2- Bumming around in the rain/Chinatown/Bars

We're late starters generally (she more so), but both of us got up and downstairs in time for the complimentary breakfast that was included with my room. Actually, it's a $50 credit towards breakfast, which came close, but never fully covered, the three breakfasts we ate.

We started walking down Mission St. towards the city. It was starting to rain, and it was cold, so we hopped into a 7-11 to try to find a cheap umbrella. Which we did for $5.99.

Anne complained a bit about being cold, so I suggested she take a Snus. "It'll warm you up"

She rolled her eyes but took one anyway...love this girl

We walked around...just people watching really..until we decided to check out Mission District. We wanted to walk around the shops and maybe grab a bite to eat.

We debated taking a Lyft, but ultimately chose the Metro. Well, I wanted to take BART, but after spending way too long trying to figure out the web of maps, it appeared as though the Metro was our best bet.

The ride started underground but the next thing I knew the train was outside. I was glad to see that it was sunny.

We got off near Dolores Park and walked into a cafe for a couple drinks. She got hot tea and I grabbed a Modelo Especial.

Here's a ****ty picture of Dolores Park.

We headed up Valenica St. because there were a few book stores I wanted to check out. She found a couple indie jewelry stores she browsed. After a bit of walking, we got hungry and walked into an Indian joint that was pretty well-reviewed.

The server was really high and forgot our order a couple of times. But the portions were big and it was warm inside so we had no complaints.

It was getting a bit later in the afternoon and we wanted to chill in the room a bit before dinner so we just grabbed a Lyft and headed towards our hotel.

On the way Anne wanted to stop off at a dispensary which sounded like a good idea. There was one a few blocks from our hotel that used to be a medicinal clinic, but had converted to recreation once 2018 rolled around.

I haven't been into a dispensary except in Colorado once, and I don't feel comfortable inside. I don't really care what we get, but the clerk seems anxious to go into painful detail about every variety of edibles and strains. We ultimately decide on a joint of Blue Cookie and some sour candy edibles.

We walk back to the hotel and stop at another liquor store for another bottle of wine. She finds one she wants and we get back to the room. Time for another bath, with our souveniers.

This one is running a bit long--I'll finish Friday and then do saturday when I get some more free time....thanks for reading.

Nice TR so far!

I went to Saratoga the other night. We got an app, the burger and both sides. Burger was good. No kronnerburger (ofc), and not as good as Zuni Cafe’s, but good. The app was was these carrots with avocado and an aioli. I actually liked it a lot. The gf wasn’t super impressed. Both the sides were above average but no better.

I’d go back if I had a hankering for a burger (apartment is nearby).

I just booked Atelier Crenn for April and am stoked. El D giving it the thumbs up was what finalized my decision to go there for my gf’s bd.
