I work out from time to time and the girlfriend is really into yoga, and aerial yoga if available.
I was looking at sublets in the city to maybe spend 3-6 months there without having to buy all sorts of furniture more than once if we decide to move out of the city. They were pricing in at ~3k/mo. I cringe at numbers like that because it's astronomical compared to what I'm used to, but I would do it still if it were important to be in the city.
I guess I'd prefer to not have a long commute. I drive ~30 minutes now and would like that or shorter, though if I were taking the BART as opposed to driving I probably wouldn't mind. I'd love to be able to walk to work (I think), but I'd also love to have a yard and a small garden and actual rooms. I obviously see the merits of living in and living outside of the city I guess I'm looking for experiences of people who have done either or both. I haven't lived w/ my girlfriend before so I guess I don't really know enough about our living preferences.
Been kinda late getting to this thread. Right now seems to be a pretty good time to house hunt. I just had a friend come up cuz she and her boyfriend are getting a place as he is working in Fremont and they locked up a really cool loft space in Emeryville for 2350 a month without too much drama (unlike when euro and I house hunted in July and it was madness).
They were both somewhat put off by rentals in the city - being able to get rid of cars not withstanding and they really liked the craftsman home type places that are available here. They were really surprised when I showed them my house and what we were getting for the same money or cheaper that they were looking at apartments for.
Commute to financial district should be super easy from Berkeley area. From Ashby to Montgomery is 20 minutes on BART. I know people who go from Rockridge to Daly City - it's just worth it to them to be over in the east bay. Friends also cited that they like that it's a bit quieter and less crowded here, but it's super easy to get to the city so you get best of both worlds. That's where I fall. But some people really like being in the center of the city. Totally a personal choice. We have a garden and it's adorable :-) Going to be working in it today since I neglected it over the winter.
Oh! And wanted to add my friend talked the landlord down to a 6 month lease because she is feisty but also because they want to get a feel for the area and not feel locked in for a year. So that is a very real possibility for you if you are nervous about long commitment to one area.
