i'm going to iceland very soon and will use it there for the first time, but will only get my hands on it when i get there. i truly know nothing about manually taking photos. are there any good sites geared to absolute beginners i could read? thanks.

Yeti,

Find a manual for the camera and study it on the way over, being able to use the camera will be the biggest step to taking good pics with it.

Really nice (and inspiring). My only comment is that for HU I would keep it to one photo of each model (in this case the blonde woman -your wife?).

I'm leaning towards Micro Four Thirds and, say, the Panasonic GF1 for my next camera as it would be easier to take on hikes and would make a decent landscape camera.

Anyone has one of those? How do you like it?

Just bought a flash gun for my camera, the Canon Speedlite 430EX II to be exact.

Hahaha yeah I know what you mean. I have to work on that part, I just did a lot of shoots with her for some reason, and I think I got some solid shots but I agree.

Not my wife unfortunately, lol. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it =D

Quick questions:

What bag do you lot use?

I've got a crumpler Muffin top 3000 thats big enough for the camera and 2 lenses, a crumpler Gigolo 9500 that's big enough for 7 lenses and a laptop. Going to get the crumpler master delhi 510 soon as well as it's a very nice looking bag and will fit everything I need if i the muffin top isn't big enough.

I use a black crumpler 7MDH for walking around and just traveling light.

When I need to bring absolutely everything to a location shoot i use my lowepro computrekker plus AW. it's ****ing huge. it fits my 17" macbook, two cameras, four lenses, two flashes, and a boatload of accessories. heavy as a bastard though.

Had a chance to take a stroll in and near Central Park this weekend.

Taken with Nikon D700 and Nikon 24-70mm lens.

C&C always welcome.

HDR shot. Been working to try and get subtle HDR looking shots. Not a big fan of the overly done cartoonish HDR. Used 3 exposures, post processed using Photo Matix.

Love the DOF on the 24-70. Would have liked to see a little more detail from the wall in shot #1. The background is also a little distracting w/ the sky being so uninteresting that day and blowing out the detail on the buildings and tree.

Shot #2 is a little unintersting for the subject, but the pic is still pleasing to the eye.

Shot 1 & 2 both look a little flat wrt B&W conversion. I would try for a little more contrast and clarity. What did you use for the conversion?

HDR is well done, but i think you should have tried to compose with subjects that didn't include the sky on that day for obvious reasons. I think staying a little less comfortable and going off the path down to the water edge and shooting across the water may have been more striking.

I would play with the colors some more and boost the saturation on the light greens especially. The oranges look really nice. Can you post a hi-res of this shot?

Also have the Computrekker Plus AW which as you said is great for bringing everything, but I'm looking for a much smaller/lighter backpack that should hold 2-3 lenses + body. Any suggestions?

If anyone is ever trying to sell used equipment do not use Adorama. They say they pay 70% of market value and when they gave me an estimate over the phone I specifically asked whether that price was the market value or what they would pay and they said what they would pay but once I sent everything in that number suddenly became market value and they offered 70% of that. They also said they would give 10% more if used for store credit but once I sent everything in that number changed to 5%.

This is a Greek Orthodox church just a few blocks up the street from where my wife's grandmother lives in a suburb of Milwaukee. It was about 15 degrees out the night I shot this, and having to run the camera controls meant no gloves. Still, it's a really unique and beautiful piece of architecture, IMHO.

First off, apologies for being "that guy" and making this situational "help me" post, but we are hurriedly moving to Thailand in a few days and I quite a newb in the photography/cam department. In downtime from tourism stuff I'm going to be playing poker and my GF will be discovering the capabilities of our new DSLR.

I have decided that Canon 7d is the camera is for us. Price is really not a concern so I won't entertain the "too much camera for a beginner" trolling. We plan to grow into this camera and understand that this is the ultimate "ameteur's professional camera".

I just need some advice on accessories. (feel free to add anything here)

Amazon packages this camera with the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens. I am fairly confident in assuming this is the standard day to day lens that will be used for most shots.(generalized statement i know)

Other accessories I will purchase
  • additional battery
  • camera bag
  • Wireless Remote - for $12 its gotta be worth it

So now, EDF photographers, I come to you. Which additional lens should I buy? Understand that we will be initially learning on this camera in Thailand and a lot of our shots will probably be of the nature/landscape variety.

Thanks so much!
Jesse

thorleif, I'd buy either an UWA zoom for landscapes or a tele for animals. I don't know the Canon options except I think that Tokina 12-24 and Tokina 11-16 are highly regarded in all mounts.

Edit - given how your kit only goes to 28mm definitely get the UWA.

I would suggest a wide angle lens like the Sigma 10-20mm.

I think I will go with the sigma as its less expensive and slightly wider.

Should I worry about picking up some filters to start off with or do the lenses come with what I need to get me off the ground?

The Sigma is a good choice too. There are probably tons of threads and reviews comparing these lenses (and also comparing them with the Canon 10-22). Here is one that I found:
http://www.juzaphoto.com/eng/article...ron_tokina.htm

I seem to recall the Tokinas being higher regarded (e.g. the troll Ken Rockwell regards the 11-16 as the best UWA available for Nikon, and the 12-24 is the same as Pentax 12-24 which is regarded as the best UWA for the Pentax mount), but I don't think you can go wrong with any of these.

You may want to compare the weights of these as well if you will be lugging it around on hikes.

Note that there are two Sigma 10-20-s, the "old" one (which slong linked to) and the new constant f/3.5 aperture one. The "new" is more expensive but isn't really overall better optically, except for a wider maximum aperture.

Regarding filters, AFAIK lenses won't come with any. You need to figure out which ones you need, if any (!), and then order them.

I'd also consider getting a fast prime (e.g. 35mm or 50mm) for indoors/evening snapshots and portraits. They won't be expensive and won't weight much.

Awesome! thanks for the help guys.

I did decide to pick up a fast prime lens, it was less than $100. 50mm seems to be the standard for the Canon fanboys..

Again, I really appreciate the help and look forward to getting to know everyone around here as I'm sure I'll be back!
