Went to Vancouver, B.C. over the weekend and grabbed a few shots:

For some reason I liked this shot I took in our hotel room of our dirty window:

And of no photographic relevance, I also happened to take a photo of this RR Phantom:

It was a bit overcast here and I was disappointed, but it all cleared up just in time to see the eclipse. I took some photos, but I haven't processed them yet. My telephoto lens is a cheapy though, so I don't have really high hopes.

Will post results tomorrow regardless of how they turned out.

Alright. Here are my eclipse photos. They aren't terrible good, but I did say I'd share them no matter how they turned out:

These look pretty cool to me. I had 80% cloud cover and never was able to find the moon.

One of these days I want to get a telescope and mount converter and try some cool moon/star/whatever shots. It actually doesn't look that expensive and seems like it would be a lot of fun.

Fantastic pictures. You could run some of them in National Geographic without a problem.

I looked through some of my photos and I don't really have anything good. My landscapes generally aren't really good, but I'll keep an eye out for you.

I really like the composition of the quoted photo, though I think I'd personally like to see the exposure executed differently. There is a lot of potentially awesome detail lost in the photo which would enhance a lot of the nice compositional elements (I can make out some cool converging diagonal lines, the tree trunk spacing, etc.)

You might need a tripod to get the effect that I imagine in my head. For example, I shot these at night on a tripod in front of my house:

I admit that looking at these now, the white balance isn't the best I could have done, but I like the exposure. Maybe a little too hyper real or maybe you didn't have a convenient street lamp, but maybe some compromise?

Either way, nice work.

BTW, when I saw your photo above, it reminded me of this photo I took last fall in Virginia:

I was convinced I was looking at stars and not snow.

This has probably been mentioned somewhere in this thread, but can someone make recommendations on a reasonably priced DSLR for a n00b photographer?

Reasonably priced = < 1k
Thanks

On the Canon side you can get a Digital Rebel XTi for like, $600 and the new XSi for I think just under a grand. I haven't read about what improvements they've made between these two models, but they are both good cameras, afaik.

OK, so the XSi hasn't come out yet, but here is an article comparing the two:

From the link above:

"The camera which will most be compared against the new EOS 450D / XSi is its predecessor the 400D / XTi. Predecessor is a slightly unfair term though as explained above, Canon’s keeping the 400D / XTi in its range as its entry-level model, with the new 450D / XSi designed as a step-up model. In its favour, the new 450D / XSi features two extra Megapixels, Live View, a slightly bigger 3in screen, and a kit lens with Image Stabilisation. Beyond this you also get an improved viewfinder, spot-metering, 14-bit processing and slightly quicker 3.5fps continuous shooting, along with a better-looking body.

These all sound like significant improvements, but as we’ve illustrated, the jump from 10 to 12 Megapixels is smaller in real-life than you might think. The new stabilised kit lens is certainly welcome, but you could of course buy a different – and better – lens with IS instead. The bigger screen, 3.5fps shooting and improved processing are all nice, but hardly deal-breakers not to have them. Of course everyone places different weightings on new features, but arguably the most important on the 450D / XSi is the inclusion of Live View."
