Have heard awesome things.

I think (a) you should see if you need to get a reservation ahead of time, and (b) that they are closed aorn because they are moving to Philly from the burbs.

This thread is making me feel old. I used to to frequent McGillins/Lucy's/Drinkers, et al a fair bit. I liked McGillin's the best of those places by far. Also Finnigin's Wake on 3rd & Spring Garden was fun. My hangouts of choice shifted to the Art Museum/Fairmount area in my late 20's a few yrs ago. St. Steven's on 17th&Green (good rotating taps & good food), Green Room on 21st&Green (Sunday Ticket & pool tables), and Kelliann's on 16th&Spring Garden (sort of a dive but decent/cheap food across from CCP) are all pretty good sports bar type places; much more my bag than the Irish Pubs of the world, meh...
+1 on Northern Libs being a solid neighborhood (as long as you're not too far north of Girrard) - I am consistently surprised at how many people still think it's a ghetto when the topic of Sugarhouse comes up at Parx or Harrah's. Haven't been to Sugarhouse so maybe it is a craphole for all I know but the neighborhood in general and the Piazza is not bad.

For Roast Beef - Caffe Chicco near Broad & Oregon is a hidden gem, though their hours are limited.

So I'm moving to Manayunk in a little over a week, and I'll be working in the KOP area. What are the good poker rooms around Philly and is there anything decent that isn't too out of the way on my trip home from work? I mostly play 2/5 but sometimes 5/10 as well, very rarely tournies.
08-16-2011 , 10:50 AM
it's between harrah's chester / parx / sands bethlehem

i don't really like harrahs room but people do, i like parx but the games aren't great during the week, never been to sands

as for proximity, none of them are that close to you
08-16-2011 , 11:22 AM
KOP, you can hop onto 476 and then 95 to go to harrahs. probably a 25 minute trip, depending on traffic.

for parx, probably 30-35 minutes, gotta take 76 to 95

sands, never been and dont even know where it is.

Where in KOP are you working?

There's a game at the Cigar Bar on Main Street... .50/1, though.

Also, for roast beef, Nick's Original Roast Beef is my favorite sandwich of all time.

Just had DiNic's in Reading Terminal Market for the first time a few days ago. Might be one of the best sandwiches I've ever had.

how do i get an invite to that ashes game?

I'm gonna be working for GSK that I guess is in KOP/Upper Merion or so.

Thanks for the tip. .50/1 is a little low but it might be something good to head to every now and then for a more relaxed game.

The outside seating looked pretty nice and the service was excellent, I think I just ordered bad for my taste.

The Frankford Hall is awesome (Stephen Starr beer garden). It's everything the Brau Haus had + 1000x better - the atmosphere with the outdoor bench seating is phenomenal. Definitely check it out it's near Johnny Brenda's in Fishtown.

Apparently Vetri is opening an Italian style beer bar right on 600 North Broad near Osteria and Stephen Starr is also putting in a new england style seafood join adjacent to Vetri's beer bar. Pretty awesome stuff happening in Philly!
I am moving into 600 on Broad (official name for the loft apartments) in 12 hours. Very excited and the lofts are gorgeous and brand new. Also pretty excited about all the new shops and restaurants in the area. The location isn't quite Rittenhouse but we think the rent is a pretty good deal given how nice our interiors are and how much space we're getting.

congrats ash you'll be the 3rd 2p2'er in there, DemonDeac is moving in there I think 9/1 and I'm moving in 10/1 lol

We have a two bedroom on the second floor. My roommate plays poker full time (5/10 and 10/25) and I play a pretty high volume of 2/5 and 5/10 as a side job. We both have cars and play at Parx 4-5 nights a week. Let us know if you guys every want to come out with us to play.

We should also do dinner at one of the new restaurants (Starr/Vetri) once you guys are moved in.

600 on Broad blowing up!

I move in 9/17.

ate at cuba libre, first time I had a meal there in a long time (prob 10 years)

food was ok not great - drinks were pretty phenomenal (capirinihias (sp), mojitos, sangria, etc)

Some thoughts on restaurants I frequent or have been to in the past week or two (bolded the restaurants that I really recommend and that I don't think have been mentioned in this thread):

Zahav is very good. Went there awhile ago and the salatim was delicious. My date was vegetarian and there were some good choices for her. Portions are small.

Been to Osteria twice, can confirm that it is delicious but over priced. Not sophisticated enough of a foodie to really comment on the cuisine or even understand what half of the menu was.

Vietnam is a good Vietnamese place in Chinatown but Pho Ha on Washington has better Pho broth. Most of the hole in the wall Vietnamese places are better than Vietnam but Vietnam wins on atmosphere, location, has drinks and a bar etc.

Tacos Don Memo is an amazing food cart in University City at 38th and Sansom with a brick and mortar location in Upper Darby that will serve you the most delicious tacos or burritos in the city. Trust me you will NOT be disappointed when you go here. Check Yelp for glowing reviews. You will never go back to Chipotle again and actually enjoy it. Be wary this cart is packed with students at lunch and the wait can be over half an hour but it is so worth it.

Starr restaurants all deliver on what they are supposed to deliver on: atmosphere. My favorites are Alma de Cuba and Buddakan. Went to El Vez for the first time last week and thought the guacamole was a little overrated. I've had better (at Tacos Don Memo) but I only got the original and not one of the fancy kinds).

Sabrina's Cafe is in my neighborhood (Fairmount/Art Musuem) and it is the best brunch in the city IMO (when I'm not in the mood for Dim Sum at Ocean Harbor). Brunch and breakfast are served around the clock. White Dog Cafe also has great brunch but I believe they only serve brunch on the weekends during normal brunch hours.

City Tap House is another great "beer place" which is located in University City with a menu that is actually pretty tasty. Their entrees are all good, burger is a good cheap option and their pizzas are good.

Kelliann's on 16th and Spring Garden is a great bar with good food (get the wings).

DiMitris on 3rd and catherine is pretty awesome for no frills seafood

Standard tap and village whiskey are the best "gastro pubs"

Monks best "beer bar"

I second sabrinas cafe for brunch, easily the best value in the city

Le bec fin for that special dinner is still a great choice for me if you like french food and a long dinner. Also i love le bar lyonnaisse which is under le bec fin and basically the same menu and its ala carte menu, which is just the sickest value for the quality of food. Our bill for 3 of us was $150 bucks 3 apps, 3 entrees, 2 desserts and a bottle of wine. INCREDIBLE

Man this thread is making me miss Philly. Last I heard it was still open, but I can't guarantee it. If so, however, you guys absolutely have to go to Mr. Martino's Trattoria on E Passyunk in South Philly. It's an older Italian guy and his wife, he serves all of the tables, she does all of the cooking and dishes. They had a third person helping them serve tables as well iirc. It's only open on weekends but the service, food, and ambiance is outstanding.

The second time I went there was about a year after the first.. when I walked in with my gf he smiled at us and remarked that he hadn't seen us in awhile and it was nice to have us back. Awesome, awesome place.

I see you ventured out in the neighborhood (not that far though lol)

Haven't been but heard good things about Keliann's.

That food truck definitely has me intrigued. I had the taco's again at El Rey ($1 during happy hour, $4 dollar margaritas) and they were very underwhelming, probably partially because they're only a dollar and trying to get them out the door during hh.

Has anyone been to the Ranstead Room yet? El Rey's speakeasy? I keep meaning to go but keep finding other stuff to do.

After about 6 visits to Frankford hall, the place is starting to wear on me. Problem is everyone who isn't from the city wants to go there!

They are ok places, Ranstead room is overrated and el rey has good food.

Apparently there is a project slated for the future to rip up current Dilworth Plaza (next to City Hall) and make it more Times Square-style pedestrian friendly. Not totally sure of the deets.

Also I heard there might be a Highline Park-ish type thing (making a park out of an old elevated railway) a bit north of Chinatown, near Callowhill.
