Not a must see, but worth seeing - Videodrome with James Woods

The happiness of the katakuris falls into the obscure bracket in more than one way. Not everyone will have heard of it but should def watch it. One of the most innovative films you'll ever see, a very bizarre mix of comedy, horror and in some parts musical.

You Can Count on Me is a great slice of life piece about a brother and sister, and is well worth seeing.

Not sure if it is obscure or not.
great suggestion.. reminds me of a few similar movies In the Bedroom, the sweet hereafter

if you want truly awful obscure films try "Plan 9 from outer Space" Bela Lugosi at his finest lol!

there was a video store in south florida when I was living there called 'Groovy Movies a Go-Go' and they had all kinds of obscure and foreign films.
And then they had one section with some really awful, old horror-type movies. I believe one of them was called, "Invasion of the Double-D Martian Women" or something like that.

84 Charlie MoPic is an incredible movie. it's a fake vietnam documentary that follows a recon team behind enemy lines, shot in blair witch style (it precedes blair witch, though). incredible performances by the actors, and it will leave you shocked and troubled. it's shot on a very low budget--$10k I heard--and hit me way harder than any other war movie.

Has anyone seen A Scanner Darkly? It is written by Phillip K. Dick, (blade runner, minority report...) apparently some kind of tripped out sci-fi drug movie. I've never seen it, but I'd be interested in someone's opinion.

imdb page for a scanner darkly
I watched it last night, actually. It was very good, trippy. The animation reminded me very much of "Waking Life," which is one of my all-time favorite movies. If you're into weird/sci-fi/paranoia-filled movies, you should definitely look into it.

A scanner darkly is awesome! I just watched it and was blown away by it.

I also finished Mike Judge's newest movie Idiocracy and though it was absolutely hilarious.

PRIMER - An indie sci-fi film from just two years ago that I loved and that seems perfectly suited for 2p2ers, imo. Smart young guys have a small business in their garage as an addition to their engineer day jobs. One day they accidentally create what turns out to be a kind of time machine, and unlike every movie ever, they actually think about what they're doing and try to use it in rational ways. But that still doesn't mean everything goes smoothly. I can't say much more without spoiling, just that I give it my highest possible recommendation, to a thinking audience.
Seconded
Thirded - below is the timeline BTW - I can't believe someone figured this out. This movie was made for $7,000!

This is actually my all-time favorite movie. Don't read too much about it, just see it.

Ghost Dog & City of Lost Children are phenomenal. Christiane F.(German version), Last Orders, and Screwed are also must sees.

A Boy and His Dog - Awesome movie with a really young Don Johnson and a dog that talks to him in his head and can sniff out women in a post-apocalyptic world.

Easily a top ten SciFi movie. 60 pages of Harlan Ellison's text fully fills a 90 minute movie.

He's not playing Bukowski either, but one the characters from his novels (although that character is similar to Bukowski).

Bottle Rocket was awesome

Romeo is Bleeding with tour de forces by Gary Oldman and Lena Olin. A 4-star script with all the stuff the kids today like: dirty cops, the mob, hit women, adultery, Anabella Sciorra and Juliette Lewis.

Bad Lieutenant with Harvey Keitel is a good flick. I'm not sure how obscure it would be considered though. Definitely worth checking out either way.

Age-Old Friends, also titled A Month of Sundays
http://imdb.com/title/tt0096774/

A great movie starring Hume Crowyn and Vincent Gardenia as two old men in a nursing home, clinging to thier independence and sanity.

While it did win some awards, I believe it to be fairly obscure, being that I'm the only one of my friends whose ever heard of it.

French Canadian (French Language film) that I saw this when it hit the theaters in limited release here in Canada in 1989, still one of my favorite movies of all time. Denys Arcand is an excellent director and I recommend all his movies, more or less.

It was subtitled in the theater which wasn't even noticable after a couple of minutes. Saw it later on video where it was dubbed and it lost a lot of the original performances. Get the subtitled version if possible.

Basic plot is that a group of actors stage a passion play and there lives start of mesh with the story....this sounds pretty hollow, its a very well written movie and a superbly acted and directed film.

Regards,
Woodguy

edit: just saw that crazy canuck recommended two other Arcand films, Barbarian Invasions, and Decline of the American Empire....I second these choices...very good stuff there.

Wet Hot American Summer : This is about a Jewish summer camp in the early 80s. This has all the people from The State, Amy Poehler, Janine Garofalo, and Paul Rudd and Christopher Meloni in their greatest roles ever. I love this movie.
