Los Angeles: Things To Do And Places To Go Los Angeles: Things To Do And Places To Go

well dunno about prices but I'd check out eagle rock and silver lake.
mount washington is decent but not sure there are many apartments.

might be kindv cool to get a loft downtown but that's probably pretty pricey.

I'm not to familiar with areas south of the bike and I'm guessing prices are alot higher near the water but if you can afford it manhattan beach and the other beach cities would be a nice place to live and not to terrible a commute.

Would appreciate some feedback on which area you guy's think would be most suitable to move in to for my interests and situation:

The areas I'm considering are #1 Wilshire/2nd-ish (Bungalow area) or #2 Oceanpark/main-ish (Basement Tavern area). I currently live in a house in Palms and would be moving for nightlife/lifestyle reasons. Am 28, work from home, surf 2x/mo and have a 65lbs dog I take out for running 5x/week so it's really important that I'm in an area that's not absurdly crowded so I'm able to do that without dodging people left and right on my runs. I suspect there are residential areas near both spots (e.g. north of Wilshire or east of Main) to do this.

Nightlife wise I think in general I've grown to like a more upscale vibe - so if backwards hat college bros are more prevalent in the Ocean Park/Main (basement tavern) area then I'd prob lean towards #2.

I'm having a difficult time deciding between the two areas so would appreciate your thoughts either way. How bad is the homeless situation in #2?

Trying to stay around 3-4k/mo and would like a spot with a patio/balcony.

My man!

I've been to 1, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 24, 30, 33, 34, 35, 42, 48, 53, 54, 56, 65, 68, 69, 77, 89. That's a **** ton, but so many more to try.

Favorites of the bunch are probably Sotto, Ink, Jitlada, and Sapp Cafe (but I really love Thai food). Just went to Cassia last Friday, it was really, really good. Good enough to get me and the wife out to Santa Monica for our semi-annual trip. Gwen is brand new and walking distance from our house, so we'll definitely check that one out.

edit: Oh ****, and Bludso's of course. Bludso's is amazing. And Salazar! Salazar was awesome.

Johnathan Gold's writing is so good. I highly recommend reading his 101 reviews.

Also, the doc City of Gold is fantastic.

He is not afraid to walk in and give a huge try at any cheap Asian place in Torrance

Glad to see Nickel Diner make it. Nickel, Langer's and Baco Mercat only ones I've been to. I go to Nickel for brunch every Sunday.

I've been to 30 of those...haven't tried some of the new additions or Trois mec. I'd recommend Shunji (used to be top five for several years) for sushi (he worked with Asanebos chef back in the days). The lady doesn't like animal very much and doesn't think it deserves that high of a ranking, but she loves cassia a lot. Not sure if I missed it but tar & roses is very solid as well but I didn't see it on the list.

One place I really need to try is n/naka. So much hype.

Going to LA for a quick trip from Dec 3 - Dec 7.

Staying in Santa Monica for 2 days and in Ojai for 2 days. Hoping to do some hiking near Ojai if the weather cooperates.

For cultural things, we're not really into the whole Hollywood thing. Prob will go check out the observatory one of the days we're down there.

Mainly we love to eat and drink. We take full advantage of Chicago's food scene and consider ourselves reasonably adventurous eaters. Looking at places on the list of 101 restaurants right now, will take any restaurant or bar recommendations you guys have.

Was in Ojai a few years ago, lovely place, bit sleepy.
Hiked a lot up around all the huge hoses on the sides of the hill, really good hiking.
We stayed in a place with log cabins, perfect for a 3 day trip, but was in July so no weather issues.

Great wine and craft beer bar near the end of the town and there is a lovely coffee shop just as you come in run by an English guy, excellent coffee.

No posts for a year and a half....damn, LA must be dead

My wife and I will be there in Fall of this year. We will be airbnb'ing and hitting up all the usual stuff....everything is so spread out but what would you recommend as an area base to stay for the week? So far looks like one beach day, day in HOlloywood with cheesy tmz tour, one day at Getty Villa and area, Universal, one day hiking, comedy clubs, etc.

Neither of us are huge 'rides' people but we want to check out Universal. Besides rides is there enough stuff to do? I pretty much will get sick after a couple non intense rides.

I haven't been to Universal in about 15 years, but I think they still have the hour-long tour bus ride around famous movie lots, and that's worthwhile. Then there's that Harry Potter stuff to walk through now, plus City Walk is outside. You can easily spend a whole day there. From downtown, you can take the red line metro train to Universal and Hollywood, plus the Expo line to the Santa Monica Pier.

True! But of course DTLA is hardly the jewel of the city (even if I still like it) and you’re there in July. Try January.

I gotta give ActionJeff credit - just seeing this thread bumped and w/o reading his post - I'm still annoyed by it all over again. And I still remember his screenname when I can't remember someone's name 30 seconds after meeting them. That's some staying power.

Lol and it wasn't even this thread:

I was in LA for one night and out of the hotel for under 4 hours and didn't do anything and it was by far the most miserable place I have ever been in. It is hard to explain how one can honestly believe that every aspect of a place they have barely seen can ooze negativity and human suffering and be so awful and distasteful, but there you have it. It was the air, the water. The airport. The way everything was set up. The people I encountered and the way they talked, the way they socialized, the way they functioned and their motives. I will never go there for anything unless it is absolutely forced on me, and I can't really even explain why, but the mere thought of being back there makes me feel physically sick.

I'm with Cliff Robertson, block it off and make it the worlds biggest prison.

"The way everything was set up." lol. Turns out never left the LAX area.

Still annoyed - has to be my #1 most tilting post on 2p2 not made by Spladle.

No thanks. I would have just quit if they tried to send me here in January.
