i think jones would be at worst a flip against cain and jds

and a big favourite against everyone else. (cept maybe cormier)

Jones putting on 40 pounds a scary thing
09-25-2013 , 02:02 PM
Personally I think cain would wreck him
09-25-2013 , 04:15 PM
I still think Jones is the "most dominant champ*" of any weight class.

I learned two major things from the Gus fight.

1. Gus is the real deal

2. Jones leans on his size and reach advantage more than I thought

I used to think Jones could clean out the HW division and now idk
if he's even a favorite over Cain

Before Jones failing to take down Gus I thought he was one of the very best MMA wrestlers in the world(Chael fight). Now I see he might have trouble with taller fighters he can't use his leverage on.

*Calling him the most dominant and staying away from the pound for pound bs because it's not possible to properly compare them but we can only compare how they performed against their opponents.

Does anyone else think jones could be a lot more impossible to beat if he added a good jab to his arsenal or is that just counter productive with muai thai and messes up his feints and kicks?
09-25-2013 , 04:26 PM
No he could def jab more it wouldn't affect his muay thai at all.
09-25-2013 , 04:52 PM
Any chance we see a more complete jones next fight with better foot movement and a jab?

How if at all does this last fight change your opinion about Jones's chances vs. Anderson Silva?
09-25-2013 , 08:08 PM
I'll wait until Silva/Weidman II before I think about that will go. Right now, I'm curious as to just how entertaining it would even be.
09-25-2013 , 08:10 PM
doesnt change my opinion of jones at all really.

Just think higher of Gus.

Still think he'd take silva down and rape him.

It doesn't change your opinion of his wrestling after man handling cheal and then failing to take down Gus?

I think he would probably outstrike silva and if not he would take him down and finish him. Watch the machida fight if you want to know what that would look like.

if chael can easily take down silva, so can jones .

the fact that gus had great tdd is still mind boggling tho. Didnnt know it was legal from europeans.
09-26-2013 , 12:42 AM
Quite a few strikers w no wrestling background have added elite tdd. JDS, Liddell*, Gustafsson, Crocop, Machida, Aldo

*Liddell had some wrestling background.

That just strengthens Kirby's argument that it's more of Gus being surprisingly impressive. Do you mean it should change his opinion in that Jones is susceptible to having "off" nights in wrestling?

If so, and I hate to say it, but I really feel like Jones had an off night all around and will dominate the rematch. Maybe he lost the hunger with all his nike money.

Yea just don't put liddell in such a list. Oh you forgot weidman.

Chael isnt the wrestling powerhouse a lot of people think sadly. Hes good obviously but hes not as good as a lot of people think. He looks amazing vs strikers though.

I would love to know how people think Jones beat Cain in a 5 round fight. I think he would do well against some of the top HWs, but I would bet against him vs Reem, JDS, Barnett, Cain and probably Werdum but some of those are really close.

I don't think it was that. I think he was genuinely surprised at what Gus was bringing and it threw him off. He was not prepared for that. But he rose to the occasion and won. Also, and this probably doesn't mean that much, but Greg wasn't allowed in his corner. So his coach wasn't able to give instruction on the fly and calm him down. But again, he worked through it and won.

I don't know how anyone could think Jones would be a favorite against Cain or JDS. I would absolutely take Jones over Reem, Werdum, and Barnett though.

I won't give a whole lot of clout to Gus's takedown because he kind of caught him off balance but I think Jon only got one takedown and Gus nullified it by getting up before Jon could do anything. Jones was out wrestled the entire match both offensively and defensively which is amazing considering his previous fights vs Evans, Bader, and Cheal where he not only beat them at wrestling but dominated.

I attribute this much more to Gus's size than his actual wrestling prowess. Jones is unable to use his weird leverage and angling on a taller fighter. Maybe I'm grasping at straws here but I think it's not really safe to assume Gus became the best wrestler in LHW over night.

This combined with reach in striking is why I am beginning to doubt jones' chance at HW

The latter 3 are close for me. Like Reem obliterates him on the feet, but you never know with Reem, half way through the round he could pull inverted guard and figure out a way to lose the fight. Barnett would be interesting. Wouldn't shock me at all if he blew right through Jones or Jones was able to keep him back and maybe take the wrestling to him. Werdum and Bigfoot would be slight dogs (I think they would be favorites vs current Jones mind you) but are just super dangerous HWs with heart and I think could not be counted out.

Cant disagree with any of that, CC. I would still be pretty confident in a pick'em with Jones vs an under-roided overeem or slow motion Barnett. Barnett is a true killer though. Reem has the heart of a mummy.

He couldnt finish a JDS half in coma. Kinda did the same with bigfoot the first time around.

I dont really see cain finishing jones.

But I could see cain's takedown being a problem if Jones wants to give a kicking lesson again.

A heavy Jones must have insane TDD overall tho.

Well if Jones put on 30lb of muscle or whatever, that's a whole different story...
