Just picked up an interesting piece that I've been curious about for some time.

Unfortunately I haven't figured out how to post photos here. But its this:

Well... you actually have to take a picture of the watch first, like this.

I really like it. I don’t think it’s something I’d be wearing a huge amount but it’s a really interesting piece and something to talk about. I like that it disassembles as well.

I havent actually worn it out yet, I bought it, spent 3 weeks dying of the flu, then flew to vegas. The other thing is that as you can see from the side profile, its very very fat, which makes it hard to pull the sleeve of a jacket over it. The other thing to note is that as a watch its not exactly possible to read anything at night (its hard enough during the day!)

I'll probably wear it in Tshirt weather. Its just a very unusual, interesting piece, which once I saw I had to have one. So lots of ebaying later I finally managed to get one. It also amazes me that theres very very little info out there on them.

Seiko has released their new 2020 SLA diver line of watches...

the best being the new SLA037 (centered above). It is based on the 65mas(original 1975 model) and the SLA017 (the original re-issue a couple years ago)... unfortunately the SLA037 is a re-issue of a re-issue... and has had a price increase to around $6,000 (up from $4000 for the SLA017)... on the good side it is now a Seiko H-Beat movement 8L55

I think I agree, if I was going for one it would be the middle one. I don’t think I could pull off a proper diver considering I don’t even have my PADI.

Picked up a G-shock recently, think it might be my first ever (gmw-b5000 the black full metal). It's turned into my daily wearer, didn't think I'd like it this much.

Also pre-ordered a GA-2100-1A1ER (the all black octagonal "CasiOak") months ago. They're still selling out in minutes on the UK g-shock site (and double RRP on ebay).

gf saw me looking at some watches so decided to surprise me by ordering a dozen absurdly cheap unbranded ones that all look pretty nice at a glance but are obviously low quality parts under any scrutiny

I'm guessing average watch was like less than $5 each or so but she won't tell me

a week later about half are either physically broken (band/casing) or not working

crazy how when i open em up it's just a single chip and battery

I've had some cheapo chinese (automatic) junk watches, and some of them are still going strong years later. Yes about half last less then a month, but for $10 many are worth a punt. And some are a lot better quality than expected.

And I will indeed post a pic if/when I get my Casioak, no collection should be without a plastic g-shock.

BTW I posted ages ago about my faulty Tag Heuer Monza (chrono issue then misaligned after repair). Got a full refund in the end, I think the jeweller had enough of me and took the path of least resistance. Still miss that watch, especially now the money has disappeared on my wedding.

Interesting bezel with "rotation safety system". See 6m55.

I regret not buying the Grand Seiko 20th anniversary limited edition two years ago when I tried it on at a local AD. Could have gotten it for $5500 and I think I could have traded in a couple watches I don’t wear to bring it down to $5k. Now it’s selling preowned for $7k!

that bezel....

I have never been a fan of all the "limited editions" that GS pumps out and jacks up the prices.

This is the only one I like. That dial is incredible in person. And it seems the retail price was a bargain with this one.

Classic 44gs case... it's a great case design
I would be willing to bet you could easily get into it for around that msrp +/- 500.
They also made a jdm version with gold hands and indices.

I saw it sell quickly for $7,100 on reddit the other day.

there have been two that have sold on ebay this year 2020... one from before the covid for 6k and the other a month or so ago for 5700.
I see some on the watch forums for under 5k about a year ago, but anything recently is above 5k... just under 6k.

I guess some folks want them pretty badly.

Want to buy a watch for my dad for Father’s Day. Willing to spend up to $1k. He’s a fairly simple guy and he wears a steel watch everyday (<$50 probably) - but it has kept up for last 15 years. It’s a fairly light watch so I don’t want anything super bulky bc I don’t want to risk him not wearing it. Know 0 about watches and I don’t wear one currently so would appreciate any advice. Also, given Covid - is there any chance I even get my watch by next Sunday (not a big deal if so but just wondering. Do prices artificially go up during Father’s Day and then come back down after?

I haven't seen watches GO UP during fathers day like things do during mothers day. Probably because most watch purchases are done by the wearer themselves.

you can get one by next sunday, by you better make the purchase today.

go to Chrono24 and shop via the parameters using $1000 as a cap.

make sure to get confirmation of OVERNIGHT shipping from the seller otherwise it may not make it.

in that $1000 range your choices are fairly limited to 'fashion' watches... but you can find something worthwhile depending on genre of watch your pop might like.

search by formal, sports, chronograph, diver etc...

a good place to begin looking is Seiko... you can get a decent 'Automatic' movement piece in that range and the seiko name isn't a negativism. Also TAG and Omega (swiss)are good names.

look here: <$1000

Prices skyrocketing on this. Apparently one just went close to $8,500: https://www.reddit.com/r/Watchexchan...rsary_limited/
