What are the best sources for trying to price a late 70's Rolex Daytona (stainless)? Most of the sites that I have looked at don't have a lot of info about the 77/78/79 window of time but that is what I am trying to price out...it was Dad's and we still have everything including box and even the original sales slip (mom paid less than a grand for it back then).

We aren't necessary looking to sell it but it was time to update insurance riders...to Dad, it was just a watch, so it got worn for everything without concern for whether it would get a scratch. But damned if I can find that period on the various sites out there...

i wouldnt know where to look it up, but you could list it on TRF and gauge the interest.

For something that specific i would imagine there is not a liquidity and subsequently pricing info available.

Thoughts on Breitling chronomat 44? Thinking about splurging for my 30th bday and buying one. Do they hold value somewhat well? Not that I plan to sell down the road but they are probably my favorite watches based on aesthetics.

My nicest watch now is a tag heur formula 1.... and I own a bunch of movados but thinking about biting the bullet to buy a Breitling. I also like Rolex (Daytona’s) but they are way out of my price range. I see I can buy a Breitling for 5k+ On the grey market which I can do (even though a little out of my price range as I’m not a baller).

Thoughts? I can buy another tag formula 1 (different color for 1k)but I feel Breitlings are amazing and look insanely beautiful. Thanks for feedback. Probably a watch I’ll keep for life and pass down if I ever had kids lol (looks unlikely but w/e).

I do not like the aesthetics of that one, but the B01 movement is a good one imo. Breitling goes for a steep discount second hand so i recommend looking on watchrecon.

IF you want to have more of a rolex look, tudor uses the same movement in their chronograph

John Mayer is back on Talking Watches and showing off some pieces he's never revealed publicly before, including a custom PP and some awesome Arabic dial Rolexes.

His collection is freakin' insane, and I quite enjoy his ideological and enthusiastic approach to collecting.

If you want an iconic chronograph you can definitely get into a Speedmaster or a Navitimer for Chronomat money and come in a little thinner on the wrist, the Chronomat is a big big watch

I have literally no inofrmation on the authenticity of the watch being offered here, but I imagine many of the potential buyers subscribe to this thread...

Hodinkee has done this a few times(they pretended a new faux patina Hamilton variant of an existing watch was a new model) but this is super egregious:

Neither of those watches is new! They came out in 2017 and 2018, that's just a lie.

I love those John Mayer videos. I would pay to go to one of his concerts if he would talk watches instead of sing his songs.

So, remember last year for my 40th birthday, my mother gave me a Speedy. With my birthday coming up in a couple months, what do you guys think of this idea? I ask my mother to get me a birth year Pepsi Rolex GMT that can count as my birthday present for the next 10 years. Basically, it's my 50th birthday present given in advance for me to wear for the next decade, but then she also won't have to concern herself with smaller presents for the birthdays between, which she could like since she finds me difficult to buy for. Every birthday, I'll wear the Rolex.

i mean, if you can get that as a gift it would be hard to say no imo. Are you talking about the new model or the vintage one? I would not pay insane premium on those right now. I bought the BLNR for ~9k when it was relatively new and the pepsi models are going for almost double that. For having a jubilee bracelet, new colors and superlative chronometer. Not worth the money imo

i have never dabbled in vintage pieces and a cursory search on prices for those would make me look at other watches for that amount of money

Birth year, so 1978. Would probably be about $12k. There are other watches I'm equally interested in for less money, but the birth year thing is part of the pitch on why my mother would do this. Those other watches are probably for me to buy myself.

1978... would that still be a 1675? That's a killer reference IMO.

Yes, 1675 is what I’m seeing. Can you educate me on what makes it stand out?

if i had 12k to allocate to a timepiece i would not be doing it on a 41 y/o rolex, but thats me.

family dynamics aside, you can get a lot for that price.

Yeah, if you gave me the 12k to spend on watches I would get both a Milgauss and a MUT Moon, but my mother values the narrative. It's obviously only going to be one watch, and I think it being a birth-year watch is what sells it.

A birth year GMT has also been something on my want list. If I were to get any vintage Rolex, it would be a Bond big crown, but the Pepsi GMT is tops on my realistic list of vintage Rolexes. I’m generally into vintage, well-made things that still seem timelessly modern — a lot of my furniture is vintage mid-century modern — and this watch fits the bill for me. The red and blue of the bezel also go with basically my entire wardrobe, as those are my two staple colors. So it’s not like this is a watch I’d be settling for. It’s one I truly want. I would just get the Milgauss and MUT Moon if given the money. But, as a birth-year gift from my mother, I would truly value this watch the rest of my life.

I've been on a Grand Seiko kick lately... narrowing down my choice, but since baselworld just ended there is nice stuff coming soon.

I wasn't in the mood for a diver per say, but the Captain Willard is just darn nice.

I like the 20th anniversary blue one with the GS all over the dial and the Peacock GMT.

For guys who have bought expensive like $10k+ watches, how did you feel about the purchase afterward? In thinking about asking my mother for a birth-year Rolex GMT to be my 50th birthday present in advance, or basically my birthday present for the next 10 years, I've had some doubts regarding is this something I really need? Is it really important in life to have a Rolex? Probably not. And that's why I don't buy one for myself even though I can relatively afford it. If you're already fully set in life, you can be frivolous with your money, but it seems ridiculous to spend five figures on a watch when I don't own a house or anything.

But this would be a gift. As a birth-year watch, I think the Rolex would make a great gift as it would create sentimental value to me and my mother. It would probably be a gift I would use more than any other gift she could give me. She finds me hard to buy gifts for and often just gives me $500 for my birthdays with something special on 10-year marks. I could see her paying for a trip or something for a birthday in the future if I didn't go for the watch.

So, what do you think, does getting a $10k+ watch seem like you don't have your priorities straight, even if it's a gift? What have been people's experiences after buying an expensive watch, or maybe receiving one as a present?

you like it, but the novelty wears off quick and it becomes a daily wearer thing.

If you're stressing this much about it, and not to ask a prying question, but is your mother easily going to take such a big hit in one go? like if 10k is a lot to you, isnt it a lot to ask her to stump up in one go? like if thats not her usual price range. Plus, really, whos expecting to be getting 1k gifts every year from their mothers in their 40s?

And I fully agree, people buying big ticket items when they dont even own their own home is ridiculous
