I am so confused by this. What sort of customer buys a $40K watch from Wal-Mart? Maybe a recent lottery winner?

Is it stupid to buy a Rolex if income >100k currently lol? At a recent tourny series, I saw a few rolexes and they looked pretty damn awesome.

I currently just have a solid set of movados but def looking for a nicer time piece as I’m almost 30. Any advice for great watch brands under Rolex price range? I’m going to guess tissot, tag heur, Hamilton etc but just wondering what people think are some of the upper echelon watch brands but slightly below Rolex. Thanks.

I’ve had a Yacht-master for about ten years now. Great watch. Only thing that sucks is that you should get it serviced every 7 years or so and service is expensive.

Walmart is just the ecommerce front end for several watch selling companies, and one of those companies got an AP.

The serious answer to this question is you need to narrow your range down, Hamilton and Tissot are generally more 300-500 with Tissot focusing on dressy watches while Hamilton is more military/aviation themed, Tag is more like 1500 and their big seller is a dive watch.

What sort of watch are you looking for, dressy or more sporty, etc.

Hey I’ve narrowed down to tag heur vs a longines. I’m looking for a sporty watch as I don’t wear a suit daily and just something I can wear everyday and have on when I play poker.

The price points for these 2 brands of 1k-2k fit my range of affordability while still not being a cheap watch per se. Any thoughts on movados btw? I have a bunch. I think they look sharp and oddly people tend to think they are expensive even though I buy them on gray market for fairly cheap compared to full price movados. I like movados but def think they aren’t high end by any means. I def wanna step up to a nicer watch.

Lately I like the tag heur formula 1. Very cool looking watch that isn’t insanely pricey.

Alright, guys. I have up to ~$10k to put in a new watch. Been waiting for this for years, and I finally feel like the time is right. This is what I'm looking for:

- Swiss Made
- Skeleton or Open heart

Is there anything possibly nicer than the beautiful Zenith Defy El Primero 21 ? Doubt it !

Spoiler:

Been looking around alot and I don't think I missed anything as far as Swiss made/Skeleton/Open heart in this price range go, but maybe I did. What do you guys like and that's the kind of watch i'm looking for ? Hublot are a bit too expensive.

I'd gladly buy one in mint condition with ~35% off but those are pretty new on the market, gonna be really difficult to find a briefly pre owned one.

I don't mind waiting a couple months more though, but still gonna be difficult.

zenith gets crushed on the secondary market. I got mine at a 50% discount from topper, which charges a higher than avg markup on WR. Time will likely reduce the price you pay but there is not a lot of liquidity with the brand ime

Ah, interesting thank you. I was only checking Chrono24 up till now. You know if there is any way to insure a safe deal ? Do they use a middle man system or something ? Couldn't find anything (yet).

@thabighurt35 thanks for the infos

no middle man, just do your research about the seller. a lot of grey market sellers move product through the forums, so find people who are turning over hundreds of pieces a year. most forums have a feedback forum.

one of the links i posted was to a piece being sold by an account called delraywatches out of south florida. google that, and there's a webstore by the same name in south florida with glowing reviews and a service department headed by some guy who used to be technical director at vacheron. you could call the shop and ask if they're selling the watch you're looking at. apparently they're also on chrono24.

not vouching for this listing obv, but do your due diligence and you'll be fine.

I guess it doesn't technically count as Swiss and it's edging up above the price limit, but Glashutte's PanoInverse XL and PanoMaticInverse series is a really interesting take on the open heart concept

They are, but they look a bit too "classic" for my taste, and as a swiss I can't possibly buy a german watch !

I'm not impressed so far, you can find a brand new defy el primero 21 for as low as ~$8500, but I haven't found a single pre-owned one in (near) mint condition for less than $7500 yet.

That's about right for a product that eats it on the secondary market, grey market prices carry a slight premium over mint/near mint used. MSRP is like 11k, though, right? That's a pretty heavy discount for a flagship product like that.

Have you looked at Tag Heuer? As part of a somewhat bewildering product strategy by LVMH they made a bunch of Tags and Zeniths that look like Hublots and so have a whole line of skeleton chronographs. IMO the Zenith is the best looking of the lot but that could be just me.

Yeah I guess it's not really fair to compare mint condition price to grey market. MSRP is indeed around 11k. I could probably live with paying 7.5k for a mint condition one with a long waranty.

About that, there is some kind of international waranty so even if I buy say in the US and want to get it checked in Switzerland because something is off, there is no issue, right ?

Got to check the new Heuer 01 on wrist, it's meh, really. Just massive but not impressive. It's a much cheaper watch, and it really shows. 20 y/o me would have probably loved it, though. The Heuer 02-T although I didn't get to check it on my wrist (yet) looks pretty sick, but so does its price :P Definitly not within budget (~20k MSRP I think).

There are some grand carrera calibre 17/36 I reaaaally used to like 6 years ago when I finally went for my current Tag Heuer (Carrera SpaceX) instead, but somehow not much at all anymore.

Frankly, If you want a quality skeleton (or large open heart) swiss watch for not more than 10k, it's really all about Zenith right now imo. I know many people are unhappy that Zenith now has this Hublot vibe, but I for one have always liked Hublot (the more "reasonable" models anyway). Like the Classic Fusion Ultra-Thin Skeleton Titanium that I really gotta try on wrist before going for that Zenith.

EDIT- Damn, looks like the Heuer 02-T isnt that expensive actually, that's something else I'm gonna have to check out...

brand new but grey market. As i said there is not a lot of liquidity with Zenith watches. I bought a captain windsor annual calendar chrono for 5.5k (from a high priced re-seller) which is about 50% off retail, but search the forums and see how many you see up for sale... The defy is new and will take some time if you want a resale piece which is different from grey market

Spotted in the Delta Sky Club New Orleans. I don’t know **** about Bvlgari but I’m assuming this is fake. It didn’t have the presence I would expect from a real one.
