Maybe

kind of look.

Have not been a watch-wearer since childhood so not sure what would look good on me. My wife says to go for silver rather than gold colours. The exact model will depend what's available when I get there.

I also definitely want a more accurate movement like quartz rather than what some might see as a more authentic mechanical movement.

Don't like those. You could go with a SARB033 or SARX035. You don't need your watch to be that accurate when you have a phone that tells time.

Those look nice. I think I'm going to have to see some IRL to make a final decision.

My personal perspective is why settle for second-best. I'm sure this has come up earlier in the thread and both types of movements will have their fans and people will define best and second-best their own way. That's cool, not wanting to reopen any old arguments, just my own view.

Also part of the point of my getting a watch is so as not to have to make an obvious move to take out my phone and look at the time in front of clients. At the moment I usually look at the client's watch where possible but the sometimes have their arm in the wrong position Another time I was like "Your watch has stopped hasn't it?".

Also knowing myself I wouldn't resynchronize a mechanical watch every week because that's what I'm like and it would start to get further and further away from the right time.

But thanks for the links. I'm going to do some exploring on that site and get some more ideas.

I really like it, it'll probably be my next watch (and most expensive). I'd prefer it if it was an automatic rather than hand wound but it won't put me off.

i mean, it's one of the most thoroughly discussed and comprehensively researched watches ever produced. i don't think anyone here can summarize this beyond: "great watch, you won't be disappointed."

i disagree pretty strongly with this. the speedy pro has a 42mm case, but it wears much smaller. anything over 40mm is usually pushing it for me, but the speedy wears smaller than most of my 40mm pieces. the automatic variations on the speedmaster are larger (+2.25mm) and thicker (+2mm), likely in part due to the addition of a winding rotor. it's a much less versatile size.

also, unless it's the only watch you ever wear, you'll find yourself resetting it anyway. setting and winding my watches is kind of enjoyable in this ritualistic, hands-on sort of way. if i'm going to carry around this pointless piece of tiny clockwork machinery on my wrist, i'd like to interact with it as often as possible.

finally, this isn't a speedmaster issue, but for automatic watches with a display caseback, the rotor often covers like half the movement at any point in time and gets in the way.

also this just arrived. in love:

Damn, that's a nice piece.

But tercet, you know Omega makes automatic Speedmasters, right? They just aren't the "Professional" aka Moonwatch. And while 1a2a is right the one of the current automatic versions(there are several) is bigger, if you're willing to buy used there are so many limited editions and short run variants that you can get an automatic in dang near any size you want from 39 to 44 in any color.

thanks!

i'm not an expert on the various branches of the speedmaster family tree by any means, but aren't those resized automatic models running eta movements with chrono modules added on? not necessarily a dealbreaker for everyone, but definitely something to be aware of before shopping.

the big problem for me is that i think the subdials were repositioned to accommodate, and it throws things out of balance to my eye.

Re: Let's Talk Watches

The Speedy "Reduced" 39mm, in the picture, is an ETA with modules so the pushers are offset, and it is one of the most common and popular automatic Speedmasters since it was cheaper than the Pro and made for like 25years.

But all through the 1990s to the present they also made a bunch of other variants, including day-date, 12-9-6 subdials, bicompax, moonphase, etc. sometimes with the ETA/module-addon, sometimes with a Valjoux 775x variant movements, and some modern automatics with the caliber 9300. There's literally dozens of em.

Re: Let's Talk Watches

thanks for clarifying, Fly.

for anyone considering a speedmaster and getting decision fatigue, when i was trying to decide between the various models, it seemed like all roads led back to professional moonwatch. it was this conversation with myself over and over until eventually settling on the same damn watch that everyone else has (for good reason):

"oh, so you like a pared down case size/shape with manual wind? check out the first omega in space!"
"but no hesalite and white batons are more legible than metal leaves"
"professional moonwatch then"
repeat

it's a pretty maddening product line, all things considered.

Agree, the speedmaster line is a total dumpster fire. Mechanical chronos are kinda overcomplicated by nature, though, nobody wants one for its simplicity, so it seems kinda fitting.

Re: Let's Talk Watches

have you tried both models on?

Omega has done a lot of good things over the last 5ish years with their movements and new watches, but every time i have put one on i felt very underwhelmed.

I have no idea who at Omega decided that producing multiple limited editions a year was a good idea or that they should dilute their flagship product with dozens of non-limited editions.

They have other historic lines to call chronographs, plus they could just come up with a new name, but they slap a tachymeter on pretty much every chrono they make and call it a Speedmaster.

I guess they're selling the **** out of them? IDK, I hardly ever see speedmasters in the wild. I probably see 15 or 20 seamasters for every speedy.

Has no one noticed the serial on my seamaster?

There are 44 models just in the "Moonwatch" subcatalog of Speedmaster's at Omega's website, another 24 in the "Racing" category. And there's no apparent rhyme or reason to which is which, both categories have different sizes, different dial layouts, different materials, movements, etc.

As mentioned, that creates a lot of decision fatigue when someone decides they want one and go to the store. There are legitimately like 5 different classic black/white versions currently available. 38, 39.7, 40, 42, 2 nearly identical 44s that are just in different product lines.

The Seamaster is easier, you want the blue or the black?

Hodinkee have started selling some new watches, quite a number of them priced under USD3k, and all limited edition, and all looking beautiful.

If you're interested in that price range, I think you could not possibly make a mistake with any of what they're beginning to sell.

It's kinda sketchy that they still present themselves as a review site that now sells the product they review
