I bought my TT sub for 10k euros couple of years ago and I dont regret it even a tiny bit. I didnt even like watches that much and now I'm very happy that I bought it. In my case I payed with my own money which makes me feel that I've accomplished something to be able to afford such a watch.

Other thing is if you buy it youll most likely be able to get the same amount that you spent on it so its not like youre pissing away 10k.

For me I was happier with my purchase for every day that went. I would say that if you want a Rolex just go for it, you can always sell it later on and get at least 90% of your money back unless you go for all gold watch.

If you're stressing this much about it, and not to ask a prying question, but is your mother easily going to take such a big hit in one go? like if 10k is a lot to you, isnt it a lot to ask her to stump up in one go? like if thats not her usual price range. Plus, really, whos expecting to be getting 1k gifts every year from their mothers in their 40s?

And I fully agree, people buying big ticket items when they dont even own their own home is ridiculous
If the money was an issue with her, I definitely wouldn't be asking for it. She's pretty well off. Her husband has like 30 cars. She spent about $4k on an Omega Speedmaster Pro for my 40th birthday and expressed how she sees a watch as marking the passage of time.

It's not so much stressing as realizing I'm talking about making a watch the most valuable thing I own, and taking a step back to think is that really what's important.

Eh, I'd quibble with that. A modern steel Rolex will hold value, absolutely, but vintage is speculative. A brand new Sub will be 80-90% of what you pay for the next decade almost guaranteed, but a 1970s GMT could lose 50% or gain 50% depending on the whims of the market.

Yeah, it does feel like the market is high right now on vintage Rolex, but it might still go higher. I don't really know.

Totally neglected the fact it was a vintage watch...

i mean, a 10k watch is a piece of jewelry, a luxury item, so there is always an opportunity cost in parking money in one. If you are thinking about long term financial impacts it will almost never be prudent to sink 10k into a watch.

i bought a hulk, wore it a couple times then put it in a box for 2 years and sold it bc i never wore it and needed the cash. Took a 10% haircut bc i sold it back to the same guy i bought it from and turned the watch into cash in 2 days.

Bought a BLNR and wore it almost every day for three years, over the last year i have prob worn it 20 times.

I have never felt bad or regretted spending the money on all of the pieces i have had, but i have accepted how absurd it is to have two years of car payments hanging on my wrist when a $100 G Shock could outperform it in every functional way.

Automatic watches are obsolete technology and even a $80 Seiko 5 is an extravagance worn for personal aesthetic reasons, forget the G-Shock, my phone tells me the time. Even if it's just part of an outfit, from 10 feet away you can get some $10 Chinese quartz piece of **** in whatever style and color you need and only a tiny fraction of the population will tell the difference. To this day the watch that got the most compliments and notice per wear of anything I've ever bought was a $20 wood quartz watch I bought and wore for a few months back during the wood watch trend.

But I do think resale value should be taken into account precisely because of your story. If you had spend the Hulk money on something more niche that haircut wouldn't have been 10%, and you wouldn't have been able to get the BLNR with the proceeds.

And I think I saw you talking about having just got out of cc debt in credit thread, bighurt, so buying a Hulk definitely doesn’t seem prudent if living on the edge like that. For me, it wouldn’t be me spending the money, my mom can afford it and it’s something I could never sell (unless desperate times), so cost and resale are less important factors. I know my mom would appreciate the birth year narrative and that I would value it for that reason and where it a lot as well.

I'd just ask for $10k worth of cocaine

I don't know if my mother would embrace that narrative. Maybe if it included hookers.

no cc debt here, have not carried a balance for over 10 years I also had the BLNR before i purchased the hulk. Not living on the edge, but i recently had to find a new job which took longer than i anticipated.

And i have a zenith captain windsor annual calendar chrono, which does not have much liquidity

Always been attracted to Datejusts with the fluted bezels, but don't quite have the wealth to spring for a Rolex. I've been looking into jumbo Tudors, though I'm a little hesitant buying a 25+ year old watch. Any thoughts on reliability/cost of owning a vintage Tudor?

anyone got a good eye for hublots? Someone in one of my frequent flyer groups posted a wrist pic of his classic fusion and I'm like 75% sure his hublot is fake but idk

imo, if you are trying to stretch the budget don't buy vintage. But, i value accuracy a lot.

no eye for hublot but post the damn pick you tease

My mother didn’t go for it. Guess I’ll have to wait nine years!

finally told a buddy to go ahead and try getting me either the BLNR or Pepsi on jubilee. Whichever comes first, im not that fussed.

I have someone that might be able to sort me another watch at almost no wait, but debating on using that level of pull on a daytona....

Is it cheaper to buy an entry level new men's Rolex online rather than in a physical store?

I'm thinking of buying one as a gift for a family member.

Does anyone know of any reputable and competitively priced online stores? Thanks. Trying to avoid fakes as I'm new to watches.

Also, any thoughts of having the inside of the watch engraved?

I never engrave anything, just in case I'd want to sell it in the future. If you're sure you wont, go ahead, but what would you write, your name? thats kinda weird. If it was a gift for a friend/relative it might be nice.

As for where to buy, technically if a rolex dealer gives a discount they can loose their AD, so online might be better price wise, as long as its from a well respected company. I'd avoid ebay!

Thanks for your input. You're right, engraving limits him being able to sell the watch in the future if need be.

never bought from an online store but watchrecon has a lot of reputable sellers. Rolex does not go for much of a discount but if you are willing to go LNIB you can get ~10% off retail. Discount varies on demand/how new the watch is.

One issue is my mother thinks walking around with a $15k Rolex on my wrist could put me in danger.
