A few pages back I received a recommendation to buy a Nomos ripoff under the Rodina brand. I purchased it and have worn it for some time now. Anyway, still not enough of a watch guy to purchase a real deal big name, but I had my eye on a Steinhart Ocean One in green for some time. Just made the purchase last week. Loving it so far.

I love my Steinhart Nav B Chrono. It's not my most expensive watch but it's still my favourite.

That's sweet. Congrats! Can you provide some background? Like where you found it, how much did you pay, did you get it checked out by a shop prior, have you gotten it serviced after purchase?

I bought this book A Man & His Watch. I really like it. You can look through it all in about an hour, but it has great, large pictures of some cool watches belonging to people such as JFK, FDR, Bill Murray, Paul Newman, Mario Andretti, Nas, Ralph Lauren, Steve McQueen and Sylvester Stallone. I would like it to be twice the size with more pics and stories, especially from celebrities, but it's a decent length at 200 pages. I'd think any guy here would like to have it on the coffee table. I got one for my step-father as well. Maybe he'll pay it back by giving me one of his watches someday!

Let's talk watch maintenance.

Hard to believe it was about 6 years ago when this thread got me hooked into this bad boy (Seamaster Pro 2255.80 Electric Blue):

Wear the thing pretty much every day, and don't baby it at all. As such, there is plenty of wear on the bracelet and some small scuffs on the bezel.

Should I care? Looks totally fine to the eye, but not sure if I should be trying to preserve the thing in any special way. I've heard of things like Cape Cod cloths, but I haven't had the nerve to fiddle around. Curious what, if anything, ya'll are doing.

Also, the watch is like 12 years old now and hasn't been serviced. Still keeps fine time as far as I know, though I'm not paying super close attention. I see professional servicing is super expensive - worth/not worth? I still love this watch every time I put it on, and can see myself wearing it easily for another 6 years and beyond.

What do you think about MVMT?

Mass-produced crap, just like Daniel Wellington. Having said that, if you like it, that's all that really matters.

Should you care about your watch looking like you actually wear it? That's ... up to you. For what it's worth, it's meant to be worn.

If you're asking what will be best for the future value of the watch, the answer is keep it in the box and never take it out - but that's boring. Constantly polishing the watch will be worse for value (and aesthetics) than simply wearing it and allowing it to show it's age.

I don't think it's necessary to have your watch serviced on a strict schedule. I basically send mine in when it's running weird.

amead- Do you know if the prior owner had it serviced? If you bought it pre-owned from a store they may have done some servicing before selling it, in which case you're probably good for another couple of years.

DIY polishing seems like a disaster waiting to happen, if you really want to maintain resale for that keeping service records will do a hell of a lot more than buffing out the desk swirlies on the clasp.

I got the jeweller to ask Tag to refinish it, but I'll soon get to confirm how good (?) their customer service is.

I'm not sure how easy it will be to refinish that, but I'd probably leave it regardless.

Certainly not a DIY job. Just waiting to see how much they'll charge (I'd hope that they can do it...).

If its £100s I'll live with it. Or pay, sell it and buy a blue dual Milgauss which I fell in love with in a casino last night.

Do you think the fault is more likely to return after it's happened once? Or assuming they fix it properly should it be less likely to screw up again?

Get the z-blue Milgauss either way! It's one of my grail pieces. It is a little thick and heavy, though. You might want to try one on.

That's the one, especially now I've seen it on different straps (not my pic):

Tag have confirmed that they cannot refinish the titanium carbide...

They have however kindly offered to let me pay almost £500 for a new case.

Im thinking about purchasing my first watch. I've found a second hand tag aquaracer for $1895 AUD and I'm sure the price will get knocked down too. Blue face in great condition from reputable dealer.

Aesthetically I really like it but I'm a watch novice. Thoughts on whether this is a good or even fair buy? Am I naive to think I can wear it with anything? A friend has reservations about the blue face.

I wouldn't wear it to like, a white tie state dinner, but for day to day that's absolutely fine to wear both dressed up and down.

I don't know what the Aus market looks like, but seems like a high price for a brand and model that are not super hot right now. $1500 USD is not, imo, a sweet spot, you can get just as good of a watch for less or a much better piece for not a lot more.

For maybe $500 or so more you could get a used Omega Seamaster or a Breitling Superocean, for little less money you could get an Oris Aquis or 65 on the grey market, for a lot less you could get a Mido Ocean Star or Seiko SBDC053.

If you're set on the Tag, just checking on Ebay confirms that in the US used Aquaracers go for more like $1k USD.

Agreed, seems a little high (although peace of mind buying from an AD is worth something).

My recent experience with Tag has put me off them for life, I'm getting my AD to give me a trade in on my Monza once I get it back from them. (Expensive) lesson learned.

I did spot this when I took mine in for repair.

Thanks for the advice gents. I'm still very attracted to it from an aesthetics pov and like you said can be worn with anything except maybe black tie dress code. I'm going to pull the trigger if I can get the price down.

Edit: oris look pretty cool too.

Looks good on you, although I hope you never have the unpleasantness of dealing with Tag's customer service reps.

Decisions, decisions...

Tudor North Flag looks great, and has an in-house movement for a reasonable price.

The Aqua terra is just class, and I love the rubber strap.
