I've heard pretty high praise about those specific headphones I THINK

Do a YouTube search on "lachlan likes a thing QC25"...I'm pretty sure he reviewed it. You can look up other reviews as well obv

the kind of noise you want to block out matters to an extent.

probably recommending qc20i though!

Tidal is the absolute stone cold freaking nuts. For those that don't know it's basically spotify but lossless flac and $20/mth. Jay Z bought the company out recently and relaunched it a couple of days ago. There's a 30 day trial I recommend anyone with a decent setup check it out. The difference between lossless and spotify premium's 320kbps music suprised me, definitely way more noticeable than I thought it would be in everyday listening, made it a lot more enjoyable.

Not endorsing them but:

- what's your setup?
- do you definitely have 'extreme' set in spotify?
- what music were you listening to?

i believe that some stuff (older stuff i presume) in spotify isn't 320kbps. but other than that i'm finding it hard to believe you are really noticing this big of a difference (any difference?!) unless you are an audiophile with really nice kit.

I want to get my mum some headphones, she'd mostly use it to listen to a podcast or radio in bed or on a plane, maybe occasionally while walking or on Skype or for music ... nothing fancy, what sort of headphones should I go for? In ear, headband, lightweight?

Barely an exaggeration to say she's never used headphones before.

Putting on the ear tips might be annoying for her though

I really liked these!

Especially for the price.. Worked great on the plane. Nice build quality, comfortable, noise cancelling works well.

Ask her. Not meaning to be facetious but advising people to go with IEM's if they aren't comfortable with them is a waste, I had pretty good IEM's that I gave away because I couldn't get used to them, similarly if your mum wouldn't wear a pair of headband phones out then they aren't going to be the right choice. The thing with IEM's is that you don't know whether you hate them before you try them, the other types can be decided on aesthetics / comfort / portability then decide which headphones are the best in group.

If it's your mums first pair of headphones comfort would be the biggest factor I'd guess

dean, this is probably a good choice. when she has it, you can help her figure out which tips she wants (she'll almost certainly be small or medium), and then it's easy thereafter. these look to the the same fit as the QC20i and it's super comfortable and feels really stable in the ear. it's also a mile away from using a proper set of IEMs with foam etc, you don't feel 'plugged up' whatsoever using these. so i'd prob pick these or a lightweight on ear pair.

so i've considered buying the jaybird bluebuds x for a long time but held off thinking that a new model must be on the horizon given how old they are. it finally arrives and it's seemingly the exact same headphone in different colours. so disappointed.

google jaybird x2 for more details.

Any suggestions for some over hear headphones.

Priced <£75
Good noise cancelling.

I don't want dre's or anything like that but any decent standard of headphone I can get for this price would be great. Suggestions would be really helpful.

Not sure about active noise cancelling headphones in that price range. For passive noise cancelling, probably the ATH-M50. Massdrop might have some good options as well

i assume you want closed, but need more details on where you will be using them, what music, etc etc

(to be clear i'm not going to be able to answer the question even when you provide all that information, but someone else will)

You aren't going to get noise cancelling at that price you may get decent isolation but if I was in the market for some reasonable over ear phones I'd be looking at the Audio Technica ATH-M50x.

You can get these for about $170, sorry I can't think of anything cheaper but these really are good headphones.

I just got a pair of these to try with the home system... if they are as good as some say, I will have to get a closed back mobile pair for the tables.

Nice 6 month old used pair... saved more than 700$ :P
08-29-2015 , 02:34 PM
If you like that sound signature and want a closed back pair of similar quality, you might wanna check out the Fostex TH-900
08-29-2015 , 05:45 PM
Thanks... I am going to have to give these T1's a good listening to first. but really, I should have gone mobile before home set up. Oh well.

Shure came out with electrostatic IEM's. My mind is blown - KSE1500

Hey all,

Total newbie here. Looking to get a pair of headphones that will last me a long time. Budget: $300 or less. I was looking at the Bose noise-canceling QuietComforts but seems people in the forum think there's better value to be had at that price ($300).

Will be using mostly to listen to music while coding.

Any recs would be awesome.
12-02-2015 , 10:27 PM
the main draw of the quietcomforts is active noise cancelling which is best in class. they are a fantastic pair of headphones to own for flights. if you fly for more than 10 hours a year, buy them, use them solely for that, and never regret it imo. (note: it's a personal preference thing, but i'd recommend the in ear 20s over the over ear 25s = easier to sleep it, smaller carry case, less sweating)

but yeah, they don't give you $300 sound quality. the most important question to ask yourself is 'do i want open or closed?'. open headphones generally sound better but leak a lot of sound - are there going to be other people in a room with you? are you in a workplace? will you ever use them outdoors or on public transport?

other questions are: what type of music will you be listening to? do you like a lot to hear a lot of bass?

you probably aren't going to need to spend $300, but it's a shame you didn't post this last week as there were some decent black friday deals.

Yeti,

Thanks for the reply. I don't fly much and, given that I'll be using these near others who are working, I think I want closed.

I'll almost exclusively use them indoors.

Music: classical, some top 40, some hip hop. Not sure how much bass I want (total noob here).

I was looking at the Sennheiser PXC 450s. They seem well-reviewed (the company and the specific pair).

Thoughts?
12-03-2015 , 05:05 AM
i just asked about bass because some people prefer really over the top unrealistic bass, and some headphones cater more to that. sennheiser are generally pretty 'neutral' and play the music like it's supposed to be heard.

pxc 450s - is there a reason you are choosing a pair with active noise cancelling? you are paying a premium for something you don't care about.

i don't know much about closed headphones. if i were you what i would do now is google 'best closed headphones $300' 'best closed headphones $200' 'best closed headphone classical music' and start reading stuff. head-fi is the oracle for this stuff so any hits on there would be worth reading. you're going to see talk of amped v unamped - a lot of the more expensive and higher performing headphones really need an amp to shine, or sometimes to even function at a reasonable volume. you'll be wanting a well reviewed unamped pair.

if you don't want to do any of that (and i don't blame you), then the sennheiser momentum over ears would be a good choice.
12-03-2015 , 02:08 PM
Hey again,

Well, I thought I wanted noise cancelling even though I don't fly much. Or is that loldumb? I mostly work in a student lounge where others are working, moving around, chatting, blah blah.

Just looked at the momentums, they look good. Do you own 'em?
