If your looking for noise cancelation and comfort then I would suggest the QC15's. I think these are the best for those two categories. I mostly listen to hip hop, r&b, and rock so the sound for me is great.

anyone have any recommendations for a usb headphone amp? Needs to drive Senn HD650s. Sub $300 would be preferable. A quick search found the Fubar III, but I'm wondering what people think is the best around that price range.

This little guy is supposed to be good for an inexpensive amp:

http://diykits.com.hk/dac_super_pro_dac707.htm ( $110 )

As is this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=350240031937 ($85)

If you want to go higher end, this one is supposed to be a cheaper version of the Zero DAC/AMP and apparently competes with units 3x its price:

http://www.audio-gd.com/enweb/DAC-Compass.htm ( $280 )

Anybody currently using/have used before the Sennheister PXC 350 or 450s?

My ears have a history of becoming very red/sore and I have to remove headphones after 2-3 hours (poor quality headsets). For those of us with both this issue + the usage of eyeglasses, and 5-6 hours in front of the computer playing pokers ... will I have any problems?

Another question: is there a faint buzzing sound when you have NC turned on?

Seriously? Can anyone else comment on the Sennheister PXC 350 or 450s?

OK just read this whole thread and I'm ready to ask for some recommendations/advice. I'm looking for a pair of over-the-ear headphones. I have the Bose QC3s and like them but my only complaint is that they become uncomfortable on my ears after a few hours of wearing them (hence my seeking of over-the-ear). I will use them for both home (computer/plugging into my receiver while watching tv/movie/PS3 games) and for ipod travel (noise canceling is essential for planes). FWIW, I'm not an audiophile so I probably don't need top of the line audio quality and everything I say in this post may not make complete sense.

Here are my requirements:
1. Over the ear, as stated already
2. Noise canceling (or noise isolating? I don't know the difference, if there is one)
3. I don't want to have to use an amp
4. Preferably not too big and bulky
5. I have no idea if this exists...I prefer but don't require a switch that could turn off noise canceling mode while continuing to play music so I can hear others talking
6. Price range: preferably but not limited to < $300

After some research and reading this thread here are my candidates:
1. Sennheiser HD-280 Pro http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-...0347004&sr=1-1
2. Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO - 250 Ohms http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-P...0351558&sr=1-1 Or some other Beyerdynamic model such as 880, 880 Pro, 990. Honestly I don't know the difference between them and can't figure out which have noise canceling.
3. Sennheiser PXC 450 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...cm_cr_asin_lnk
4. Sennheiser PXC 350 http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-PXC...0349857&sr=1-4
5. Bose QuietComfort 15 http://www.amazon.com/Bose®-QuietCom...pr_product_top I KNOW Bose is disliked by audiophiles for being overpriced and "mediocre" quality. However, I've read multiple reviews saying their noise canceling and comfortable fit are both exceptional which are my two biggest priorities and I'm willing to spend a little extra to meet my needs so it's hard for me to rule them out.

Which one do you audio savvy guys recommend? I'd like to know if there are any major differences and which one is the most bang for the buck. Please point out if I've made any incorrect assumptions i.e. one on my list doesn't have noise canceling, requires an amp, etc. Thanks in advance.
bump for feedback plz

Cliff notes: Got Sennheiser 350's. not very impressed.

I asked the guy in the store for the best noise cancelling headphones he had and he said everyone was recommending these so I snapped them up and got on my 14hr flight. I have never used any headphones worth over $50 and I don't really notice anything too special about the sound quality. Also, it was not blocking the jet engine noise very well. It was doing some, but for a repetitive sound like that I expect better. It drops refridgerator/aquarium noise in my house down to nothing, so maybe it is just that particular jet I was on had some frequencies its not very good at cancelling.
On the positive side, they are comfortable enough to wear the whole 14hr flight without any problems, and Ive never been able to wear any headphones for more than a couple hours without discomfort. They are also very well constructed and sturdy. The cable is very thick.
I have not tried anything comparable yet. I guess I'll go down to a shop where they have the sony's and the QC15 and see whats up. Also maybe the electronics are better in the PXC 450's to mash that jet noise. Cost doesnt matter much, the main thing is I want that plane noise dropped.

Can someone please clarify whether the 350, 450s or any of the QC's actually require batteries when I'm just using them plugged into my computer? And that they only last 16-20 hours? It seems kind of ridiculous that on a poker site nobody would mention the fact that you need to replace the batteries after a few sessions ...

If this is the case I'll be going with some Shure earphones ... any recommendations for decent sound quality + cancellation + comfort for 4-5 hour sessions?

Any of the active noise cancelation headphones, Bose, etc., require batteries.

I'm looking for something simple, over-the-ear; I just want to wear them while working at my desk, listening to relatively low-fi stuff (intarweb radio, eg). I won't be doing any "critical listening". Comfort, price, sound isolation are my big three priorities.

Sennheiser HD 202?

Thought I would add an opinion on the Shure SRH-240s ~$60.00 in store from Best Buy.

I wanted a cheaper pair of headphones and kinda needed them same day. After listening to them for a couple weeks and my roommate recently purchasing the Beats by Dre over the ear noice cancelling ones, I am still somewhat impressed given the price difference for the Shure's.

The bass is clearly better, the highs seem a little higher/sharper and the sound seems more aggressive in the Beats by Dre pair but for $~240 difference I am happy with the Shure's. Also, the Shure over the ear piece is larger and easily encompasses my entire ear whereas the ear piece on the Beats by Dre do not, as comfortably. Obviously the BbD are far superior as they are metal, fold up and come with a cool protective case but again for only $60 I am happy with the Shure's.

The BbD are all I have to compare the Shure's too but I figured that is probably a good headphone to gauge between low and high end.

If you guys really want good advice on phones and equipment go to www.head-fi.org imo. Careful of your wallet though, since I've been there the first time i've spent close to 3k on my setup. I'm trying to not be tempted by the HD800s... Currently I have 650s with custom cable/ICs along with a Little Dot MK3 and an MHDT Havana dac (w/a Bendix tube). It's funny because as good it sounds right now I always want something better. Damn you, Head-Fi.

Im anticipating a lot of hate but....

Can someone comment on the Monster beats by Dr Dre?
12-23-2009 , 01:46 PM
You deserve a lot of hate, considering the post two before yours comments on them.

There is also a "search this thread" function in the "thread tools" at the top, there are other comments in this thread about them.

Are there any headphones with sound cancellation that DON'T require batteries?

Or ... do any of you use headphones that require batteries for poker? Seems ridiculous to have to change out the batteries every other day after a few sessions.

I must be missing something. I don't see a headphone jack.
