The crappiness of Bose is discussed extensively in this thread. Try reading it.

I bought these for $108 from Amazon (supposedly refurbished, but with full warranty). They appeared to be brand new and unopened, so good start.

Lets start with the good:
They are very comfortable. I had tried a pair of on-ear headphones from Brookstone, and they pinched/crushed my ears in an uncomfortable way. These did require some adjusting to get them to sit comfortably and to make a decent noise-seal, but once they were on, they didn't bother me for over 2 hours on an airplane.

The noise canceling feature seems to work well. The passive isolation isn't too great. With the phones on, without music, and with the noise canceling circuit off, engine noise was probably only cut by about 40%. Obviously, larger over-ear headphones would do better here. Turning on the power makes a huge difference. The low-end noise is almost completely eliminated. Without music playing, there is an audible high-pitched noise, but when the music starts, that is effectively covered up.

Sound quality was good (I'm not an audiophile, so I won't comment too much here). Turning on the noise canceling brought out the bass nicely without making it too muddy. For the casual listener, these should be more than adequate.

Now, on to the bad:
The battery pack is surprisingly big considering that it only takes 2 AAA batteries. It is very long, which makes it awkward to clip onto a belt or to stick in a front pocket while sitting. The Brookstone model was shaped more like an oval, with the batteries next to each other. This is a much better layout.

I would prefer a single wire to one ear and connection through the headband, rather than a wire to each side (but that's not a big deal). However, some kind of wire taming device would be nice for storage. The provided case kind of encourages you to just stuff the wires in and hope they don't get pinched by the zipper when you close it.

A slightly larger case (which might also hold an ipod) would be a nice touch.

The biggest weakness is the lack of a mute button. While on the plane, I could hear the ding for announcements but couldn't make out what they were saying without taking the headphones off my ear. The Brookstone model had a button on the battery pack which muted the music and let ambient sound in. For air travel, that was a very nice feature.

So, overall, I definitely enjoyed the PXC 300. They were comfortable, sounded good and did a good job of cutting out airplane engine noise. If I flew more often, I would probably be looking around for a different model. A differently shaped battery pack and a mute button are on my wish list.

I got a pair of Maxell noise canceling headphones doing the stupid Pepsi points thing and they are very good on planes. Cancels out the jet noise but you can still hear people talking. I think they were 40 bucks on Amazon, or 125 Pepsis...

I'm buying a pair of these Beyerdynamic DT770 today. I can't wait till they get here!

Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7 QuietPoint Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Any thoughts on these headphones? Looks like they meet my needs. (ipod , Wear while playing online or at the table live) and are over 200$ cheaper than the bose qc2.

Got a bunch of great reviews on amazon?

Thoughts or other suggestions?

Here is an article on how to fix them: http://chrismetcalf.net/blog/archive...ty-headphones/

I did this same fix and now my headphones are working again perfectly. I use them mainly for commuting to work on my bike or while working out at the gym. I've found the best way to wear them when active is to go up the shirt from the back and come out the neck on the back of the neck, bringing the cords over the ear from behind and tightening the cord using the sliding plastic tube piece. I've had mine for over 3 years and used them a ton. They're pretty good sound and quality IMO is much better than most other brands you will find without spending > $100.

Shame PITTM is banned, but would be great if someone else could offer some advice.

I need a pair of over-the ear headphones for the following -
Listening to itunes and general grinding online.
Playing live and listening through my ipod.
The occasional plane/train journey

I will be playing in a poker office next year, with 1 or 2 other people there often, so don't want too much sound leakage so my tunes don't disturb the other guys, but don't have to be totally silent.

Budget is £150-200 or $300-400 i guess, but you guys get a lot more bang for your buck, so what you get for $400 would prob cost me £300 lol. Fwiw the Beyerdynamic DT 880 i can get for $320.

Considering -
Beyerdynamic DT 880 & 990
Sennheiser HD 595
Sennheiser PXC 350
??

Thanks

I picked up some Shure SE-210 and I absolutely love them but now I'm wondering if I messed up by not getting the e500 (I was kind of in a rush and didn't fully read this thread). Is the difference truly noticeable for someone mainly just using an Ipod and who might not be the most discerning listener?

Those are all open phones I think. I've never owned a pair but from what I've read in this thread they will be just like having regular speakers by your ears. Which would make them pretty poor choices for playing live or anywhere that you don't want your neighbors to clearly hear what you are listening to.

PITTM said that he has had his neighbor across the hall in his dorm come over and ask him to turn down his HD595's

I would recommend a pair of Sennheiser HD280's. I am getting a pair of Beyerdynamic 770 DT's today. They are both closed back phones that should not leak too much sound. I will give an update after I listen to the Beyer's tonight.

Hi all,

I currently have a pair of Grado SR-60's that are pretty much falling apart. They 'pop' with bass, are uncomfortable to wear, etc.

How much different would a pair of HD-555's sound?

I'm considering upgrading, but also thinking I should maybe just jump to a better headphone. That said, I'm not really sure if I want to bother with an amplifier or not.
06-20-2008 , 11:00 AM
HD595 can be bought for under 200 on ebay and I think they are a step up from the 555's.

what is a decent set of headphones for <$60? I want something that is comfortable and low sound leakage
06-20-2008 , 07:31 PM
I got my Beyerdynamic 770 DT's this evening. WOW! They feel really light on my head and are very comfortable. I would say almost to the point that I might forget I have them on. The bass is very nice and not boomy. They are just silky sounding.

They are 80 Ohm so not as easy to drive as my 280HD's, they don't reach quite the same volume. I don't think they block out as much outside noise and probably leak a fair amount more, but the sound is honestly better to my untrained ear.

The sennheiser's have a coiled cord that I like a little better.
