These are going to be my next purchase: Bowers+Wilkins (B+W) P5

Originally had Sennheiser HD555, then moved up to Shure SRH840, and now I can't wait to get the first B+W headphones

Well, so far I have managed to wash and dry my Monster Copper in ear buds and they still work fine.

you shure?

it says they are worth $125 and iirc 5800 FPPs are worth much less

i had some £40 shure earbuds which were fantastic, but the cords broke, so i bought some jvc one that had wild good ratings on amazon.co.uk for £15-20 or so, and they are flat out HORRIBLE!

i am so mad, for some reason. just that anyone could think the sound these are producing is good. they seem worse than the ones that come with an iphone.

anyway, any suggstions? it's for work so i can't really get a 'big pair', has to be in ear i guess so i can take one bud out at times.

What are the consensus best earbuds? Both for comfort and sound quality? I like those Shure buds, anything else I should consider. And I'm probably going to get flamed for this but they are significantly better than the normal Apple earbuds? I don't mind those so much.

Why do you want to move from The Shure SRH840? Do you not like them? What you're doing is like going out an buying new speakers every year. Buy what you're most happy with, and stick with them for years.

After reading about them, I have to admit I am curious about what you will think of them.

"These are the best earbuds we've found for use directly iPads, iPods and MP3 players,
thanks to their top-of-the-category sound quality and low-impedance efficiency. "

If I calculate based on what people are offering for FPPs on 2+2, that turns out to ~70$; which doesn't seem too far off for the earbuds. Maybe PS got a good deal on them by buying bulk.

Also, Shure doesn't appear to have anything cheaper on offer than these.

Hey,

I had the Sennheiser for 4 years, and through normal wear and tear, they had to be replaced. Then I had the Shure 840s, but after about 18 months, I adjusted the ear piece, and the arm holding the earpiece snapped. The store I bought them at refused to give me a return, and I'm trying to get them replaced by Shure.

When I broke the Shure's I started researching for new headphones and to see if there was anything newly released / anticipated. That's when I found the B+W P5.

Outside of them breaking, do you like the Shures? I use them to fine tweak professional mixes, and I enjoy listening to music, in general, on them.

Don't forget to post a review of those other ones, when you buy them (comparing them to the Shures would be beneficial to me).

Just picked up some Shure 840s. This is my first pair of high quality headphones and I am far from a audiophile. That said, these are absolutely fantastic. Where I am currently living the options for buying/trying headphones is pretty much limited to Bose and Beats. I was not impressed by either of these, so after research on the internet, and searching around town I found a store with some Shure products. Ive been listening to a wide variety of music for the past 5 hours or so and have been amazed at the different layers on some of my favorite tracks that I havn't heard before. The balance in these is perfect. The bass is perfect in hiphop and electronic music genres. I put on m83's "Intro" on there latest album, "Hurry Up, Were Dreaming" and was completely blown away(Side note, this is my pick for 2011 Song of the Year). Listened to some classical tracks and it feels like I am sitting in front of an orchestra. I cant get over how I can pick out the different layers in songs instead of them just being a muddled mass. Super comfortable, wore em for 5 hours without any fatigue. Recommended to anyone. I think they are running $130 free shipping on amazon right now. I paid about $175 where I am at, and I wouldnt have been disappointed if I had paid a lot more.

I have been pimping the Shure SRH840s heavily in this thread. I'm also an audio professional, and love them. I still can't EQ properly in the headphones (unless I play it safe), but I can balance and image really well using them, once I have rough EQ'd everything on my main monitors. My favorite types of music are hip hop & r&b (neo soul mostly), and I love how all that type of music sounds on them. They also sound great out of the box (just a bit bright, that goes away after the break in period). I think they are relatively accurate overall, as well, which is important to me (meaning I can hear the problems).

I listened to about 6 different highly recommended headphones (some from professional users from the internet) at Guitar Center, and when I put the SRH840s on, it was completely obvious what my choice was. It was the only set that sounded like what I had mixed. They're not hyped, and that's a big deal to people like me.

Hey, can anyone recommend a good pair of headphones in the 50-250$ Price range.

The main use for these headphones is for listening to music while grinding online poker. I would really like the outside sound-supressing function as I often have to deal with outside noise and want to be able to fully concentrate on grinding.

I don't care much for the quality of the sound, most important factor is comfort and the sound-supressing function.

Thanks

Go to your local Guitar Center (if you have one), try on a bunch of different ones, listening to sound quality, and pick the one you like.

I found this yesterday:

How To Make Custom Silicone Ear Molds for Your In-Ear Monitors
http://www.howtogeek.com/57481/how-t...-ear-monitors/

Quote:
"Just did this with my V-Moda Vibes. Turned out quite well. They stay in way better when I exercise with them and offer a much better seal for noise blocking when I use them under a helmet on a motorcycle. I may have to do this to my ER4s as well.

The only suggestion I’d give is to make sure the driver cover is protected with tape or something. The Vibes have a grill on the front that picked up some of the molding material and was quite difficult to remove."
Has anyone tried this?

PSA:

No one ever talks about this, but I'd be willing to bet that ear buds have a very good chance at causing severe hearing damage. I'm pretty careful, for the most part, with how I listen, but I used to wear one Bose ear bud when playing poker occasionally (probably too loud, just to be able to hear the music with one ear bud over all the noise in a poker room), and I know that I at least slightly damaged my hearing in that ear with it (it doesn't affect my work, but it is really annoying to me the difference I notice in that ear).

If you are wearing ear buds, do NOT crank the volume really loudly, if you value the health of your hearing for many years to come. If you hear any ringing in your ears, after listening to music, you're already in trouble. I think custom ones could be even worse, because of people's desires to jam them further into their ear canal. In case anyone is unaware, it is pretty easy to touch your eardrum with your finger. You don't want to put loud sound pressure next to your eardrum, and imagine how close a custom made ear bud would be.

Nielsio, the guy who wrote that is likely mostly deaf, listening to music on ear buds, under a motorcycle helmet, while driving a motorcycle? Wow...

Be careful kids. Pete Townsend really regretted his reckless behavior regarding his hearing when he was really famous and doing stupid stuff with his guitars. You do not want to live your life with a terrible case of Tinnitus.

In-ears isolate very well, which means they don't need that high of a volume. Trying to overpower the background noise with non-in-ears is what causes a lot of problems. It's of course still important to not listen too loudly, but in-ears aren't more prone to that.

I doubt your claim about touching your ear-drum. Can you stick your finger 3cm in your ear (over an inch)?
12-21-2011 , 01:19 AM
Except some people like to "feel" their music. That happens by turning it up. If I'm wearing headphones, I'm not turning it up to block out outside sound, I'm turning it up to hear the music, and to "feel" it. I can't speak for anyone else. That said, I personally hate the sound quality of ear buds, so I rarely wear them, even though I own some. As a Mixer, I am often forced to listen at louder levels than the average public to highly critically listen to the sound, to be able to hear details and errors. Fortunately loud levels don't have to happen in headphones very often, maybe only one or two listens for impact judgment.

When I was at the doctor's office last year dealing with an ear problem after getting sick, they had a huge drawing in the office. The only place where you meet resistance in that drawing is the eardrum (the wall, so to speak). Unless you have very large fingers, it is very easy to touch that "wall" with your pinkie. It's why you hear a loud brush against it when you touch it. I have not seen any depictions of that area of the ear with any other barrier, so it stands to reason that is the eardrum, and, to me, it is horrifyingly easy to touch. It is why they don't want you using Q-Tips. By nature, the Q-Tip touches the eardrum, and it can cause bruising, and possible rupture if you're not careful.

Where I grew up, there was a folksy doctor on TV, named Bob Lanier. He used to say to never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear, presumably because of how easy he felt it was to damage your eardrum.

So after getting sick of cheap earbuds breaking on me I bought these:

http://www.amazon.com/NC200B-Fidelit...4446157&sr=8-4

They offer good sound quality and portability. However, one of the plastic pieces just cracked a bit and will probably eventually break. Does anyone have any suggestions for portable headphones that will last? Maybe I just don't treat earbuds well, or maybe I just buy ****ty ones, but I just want good sounding headphones that will last me a while.

Do you have an opinion on the Shure SRH940's?
