Fished the deschutes and metolius today. Caught a little redband and my first ever whitefish in the deschutes and hooked and lost presumably a trout on the metolius before giving up after losing too many flies.

This is the whitefish

metolius has big bull trout in it from lake billy chinook.

ive fished and camped there at camp sherman as it about the prettiest spot on earth.

7x and tiny flies is what works best on that gin clear water.

where are you living off topic? still around truckee

its been many years but close to you is putah creek and i used to catch giant rainbows there. takes a little time to find good spots but really great fishing.

napa feather and yuba rivers when the water flow is right are great as well but not for as big of fish.

you can catch surf perch off the s.f. beach on flies or gulf camo sandworms.

you are in a good spot for fishing. and even off that pier near the golden gate bridge can be good.

Found myself in the middle of a rainstorm and associated mayfly hatch on the Crooked River below Bowman Dam. Only managed two rainbows and they were both foul-hooked on dries Fly fishing

bowmen, fordyce, and jackson meadows used to be the best fishing up there and wonderful to camp.

at times little truckee had runs of fish as well as milton creek i believe. you have to get to there from sierra city on haystacks road or something like that. its been eons so i dont remember too much.

surprised you can get in this early snow and ice was until june some years.

do go to milton creek reservoir as that used to have giant browns and its close to jackson meadows. its a pretty one as well and small. you could almost hit a golf ball over it.

Yeah this was Bowman Dam impounding Prineville Lake in OR. Likely the high country lakes in the sierras are still mostly inaccessible

Bought a vacation house up in Truckee last year. Have been having fun mountain biking, kayaking on the lake, and of course skiing. Was planning on doing some casual dock (or maybe kayak) fishing this summer. I've never tried fly fishing - any ideas for how I might get started or give it a try up in the north lake area?

off topic. if going to oregon head over to the steens. and fish the donner and biltzen river and the ana river and around ana lake. its really great. your camping though its not populated in that area..
of course the crooked is good when its not too low.

the owynee is good below the dam in nevada and in oregon. good browns in oregon and good until it s too low.

start by going to cabelas and buy a 100 fly outfit and some flies and leaders. they will set you up and you can refine that from a regular fly shop later. practice casting in the park. u tube will help.

then hit the tuckee river. cast short casts 30 feet or less while learning or you will have no fun. believe me.

Always good to listen to Ray Zee in these matters If you read the first 50 or so posts in this thread, I was a total beginner (and probably not much better now, just more experienced) but got tons of good advice from this thread. My first rig was a package from Bass Pro Shops, but Cabelas will be the same. You can get a 9' 5-wt rod, reel, backing, and fly line for about 100 bucks. Get a couple leaders and some flies and watch youtube videos for the basics.

Personally, I find the Truckee to be very challenging, which makes it more satisfying to actually get in to a fish or two. If you go to the south Tahoe side and fish both forks of the Carson River, it's not necessarily easy, but more well-stocked

and boca and stampede res. are a short drive and with a kayak can be fly fished easily. i used to catch large trout near the bottom on nymphs.

i dont know anymore but decades ago martis creek res. had giant trout and was fly fishing only. and they followed the hatch.

next head to donner lake. in the spring its stocked with tons of rainbow trout which can easily be fly caught. they dump them in near the marinas or boat ramps so easy to get to. there are very large brown trout that cruise the shorelines at dawn and dusk.

ive caught many trout right in downtown truckee itself. then i would go eat at the squeezin omelet place . if it is still there was one of the best breakfast places ever.

Typically not a big gear guy, but I recently bought an Echo Shadow II 10' 3-wt to (hopefully) better apply this Euro nymphing method. Probably never catch another fish like this lol.

its fun to experiment with different gear. lately i just use short like 6.5 or 7 foot rods with a 3 or 4 weight on them unless fishing big water. this way no hassle in the brush and having to deal with a long rod walking around.
and once you get used to a short rod. 40 foot of fly line out casts are easy and you can of course force them longer if needed. but after 40 feet its get hard to control your line.

those long rods do make mending and keeping line above the water much easier.

Eleven years later Fly fishing we are returning and hopefully the weather is cooperative and I can see what all the experience gained has gotten me.

I’m looking at shipping a bunch of equipment to the first place we’re staying so I don’t have to check some awkwardly sized stuff as luggage.

I guess Grebe Lake has been poisoned to reintroduce native species so my quest for grayling will be put off again

Not about fly fishing per se, but I've always associated that with small streams.

So my question: how do the fish survive the winter?

Going up the mountains outside of Denver last weekend, I see people fly fishing. For some reason, this occurred to me.

It doesn't seem as if the creeks and rivers are deep enough that they wouldn't freeze solid, so that's probably pretty bad for the fish.

I don't hear of a run (like salmon) where the fish come back up the mountain in the springtime either.

they are cold blooded and do fine in the winter. moving water doesnt freeze solid.

some of the best fishing is on a warmer winter afternoon.

hey guys, anyone here do any saltwater flyfishing? if i use heavier Orvis freshwater gear (forgot exact rod info) to try my luck with striped bass will that be alright or not?

pretty sure that rod is still under the 25 year no questions asked warranty or so, more asking about whether it's a dumb idea rather than if my rod will snap

eight weight will handle most stripped bass just fine. no rod should break from a fish. it is the fisherman that makes it happen.

Many years ago I was watching a guy throw probably 60-70’ of line at New Brighton Beach by Capitola. I’d be worried more about snagging someone on the backcast Fly fishing

he should be carrying about 30 to 40 feet or so and shooting out the rest.
