beautiful trout oT!

i am living in houston for the summer and haven't had a chance to hit up the redfish yet. however, the guy at the orvis store was super friendly and told me about a place where i could try and catch carp. went yesterday and got skunked, but was a little smarter today.

one of the most bizarre places i have eve fished. a concrete culvert, technically i think it's part of the buffalo bayou. there's tons of mullet swimming around, which i thought was really odd. and yet there are also these carp - from some googling i think they are 'black carp'. must be some salinity in the water i suppose.

despite being such a strange setting, it was actually quite a bit of fun because you are sight fishing them. tails out of the water, wish pretty decent water flow and throwing 6-8ft ahead and drifting it by their face. this is the 1st one i caught but very cool. fight hard. used 8lb tippet, fish put me on the reel and ran some good drag out. will definitely do again (and is only a 10 minute drive to go). i am guessing it was prob 7-8 pounds

That's pretty cool that they'll go after a fly like that. I've only ever caught carp by accident while panfishing with worms when I was a kid. They're definitely brutes on light tackle, though, so that must be fun!

There are some lakes above Truckee California. One was Fordyce lake. Road wasn't good to get in but fishing was good. There are a bunch of them that are beautiful and worth finding.

I'm considering doing a day hike into Cottonwood Lakes outside of Lone Pine, if not this year, then next. The main challenge is I'm not really a camper, so would have to take off at dark-o-clock to have a chance to get some fishing in in the morning before walking back out. Seems like that location is my best chance to catch a Golden, though.

There used to be some in a few eastern Nevada lakes.
I've caught a couple but they were small.
There are big trout around Monmouth lakes.

Yea it was definitely a blast to catch. Went back once more last week but water levels were low (no rain and it's hot as hell here) and I didn't see any. Also got skunked trying to wade down in Galveston for redfish. Wrong time of the year and I don't know where I am going.

Really looking forward to getting back up to Ithaca in a few weeks. Plan on fishing a lot more than last year.

Didn't even know this existed in EDF and I'm a huge fly fisher. Just got done doing a 6 month stay in Florida. Off to Whistler for another year now.

Its called a triple tail. We saw it cruising the flats while tarpon fishing and landed one on his head. Immediately snapped it up. Last fish is a big black drum.

LOL thing seriously looks like a cross between a crappie and a coelacanth.

Yea we actually did put him in the cooler lol...I'm no guide just doing a bit of fishing while living down there temporarily before moving back to Canada for online. Got a few nice hybrid stripers today. Was a real blast pounding them on the surface with a wiggle minnow. Big one was 23.5", ~6lbs or so.

Doing a few days in the Cascades next week...mostly sightseeing/hiking around Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood. Hoping to wet a line a couple of times in some of the smaller water. Fingers crossed!

Possible to land one on a 5-wt?

sure most steelhead are around eight pounds or less and that makes a good fight on a 5 weight rod. its a little light but ive caught many on very light tackle. use what you got.

Weather has sucked. Stopped off at The Fly Shop in Welches, was told that there's nothing doing for steelhead right now, but might have a chance at some trout in the salmon river. Caught one tiny trout but did see some beat-up looking salmon in a couple of pools. Might try again in a couple of days

yakima river which probably isnt real close to you has tremendous trout fishing.

the methow river near twisp also has good trout but known for its searun fish.

there should be lots of pinks inland in some of those rivers that feed the ocean

wait a minute you are in oregon then. there are lots of salmon in the columbia right now even steelhead. also in the tributatries. your not for from the clackamus, Willamette, and the hood river might have a small run going on right now.

on the res in the washington side the klickitat should be good. the action changes so you need to google and ask at the shops. and some wont tell out of towners much.

a short trip to the deschutes will get great fishing around maupin or even in bend.
thats one of the world renown rivers.

for trout you can hit the fall river or the metolious which is tough fishing but one of the most beautiful spots in the world to fish. thats near sisters and by camp sherman.

It's a little jarring when you're drifting a s16 copper John through a pool and a 15-18 lb salmon goes cruising by right in front of you

no its not stick on something big and red or orange and get in near the fish.

Hit the Deschutes yesterday evening. There was a big crowd at the mouth so I moved upstream and didn't luck into a salmon/steelhead. I did see something working downstream from me, so I put on a small dry and caught a little rainbow to avoid the skunk. Going to do a short falls hike today and check out the Deschutes below Sherars Falls
