I agree. I have no issue with max winning, it was clear. In fact I would have been fine with the stoppage earlier when he was standing over Aldo dropping bombs on his jaw. My thought on it is more the way the intelligently protecting yourself rule gets exploited.
Max had a few clear opportunities to go for the choke and I would have bet he sunk it, but he wanted the tko. That's fine, and again he arguably had that already depending on the ref. The point of a tko and ref stoppage, though, is not that the fighter simply isn't fighting back, it is that he is going to get hurt for no reason if the ref doesn't stop. The whole big brother on top of little brother boxing the ears without answer is not that different than a lay and pray imo. The argument my friend made is fighters will never tap to blows like that, but I feel that is bs because they tap to subs all the time.
I just think when it comes to earning a finish by tko it should be because the ref had to stop it or the fighter was going to be hurt. Otherwise it incentivizes what we saw which was not risking going in for the choke because you'd rather pitter patter while you look at the ref. If it isn't a clear danger of hurting him, and the argument is he isn't improving his positions, it should be up to Aldo (and his corner) to weather that or not and max to try to end it with a tap or damage.
If those blows are more damaging than I understand I would consider that but I don't know.

Gif of end of the 2nd round. Knew this was a really bad sign but kinda hoped Aldo would be able to recover in between rounds.
I watched it again, and while I did see Aldo getting tired I don't think he was fully gassed. Right after the gif posted here he landed a few and threw a spinning kick. I still think it was more a case of max speeding up the pace than Aldo slowing down too much, even though both happened. Aldo got noticibly tired at about 4 minutes in the 2nd, but it wasn't like Conor vs Diaz where he was tanked at the end. Max hit him with a beautiful one two-one two. If he had been throwing freely from the first round like that I think he could have finished him the same way in one or two.
