Affliction: CANCELLED!

I wonder how good Dana White is feeling right now.

Affliction may have just saved themselves millions of dollars.

Hopefully the fighters under contract to fight only up to this event (such as Fedor) aren't stuck under contract until Affliction puts on another card (if they ever do).

This kind of sucks. Despite the fact that the Barnett/Fedor was off I was still kind of looking forward to this card, at least for some live MMA. Barnett isn't that big a name that him being forced off the card could cancel the whole thing, is he? Just replace him with Monson (who is probably just as a big a name, if not bigger) and keep the rest of the card the same. Pretty stupid imo...guess Affliction just felt like this would hurt PPV buys at a great enough degree that it was time to just cut their losses and move on to strictly selling t-shirts.

That was the smart move imo

The can now position themselves as refusing to put on anything but a superlative card. Assuming they can put on another promotion. If they can, they may come out smelling like a rose.

Dana better be careful. Lesnar may wake up and see himself in a better bargaining position.

The big question right now is: is there anyway for Strikeforce to pick up Vitor/Santiago or Babalu/Mousasi for their event? Either would make up for Diaz/Riggs getting axed.

Who's going to trust the guys that couldn't even put on 3 consecutive PPVs? Fighters and fans aren't just going to ignore this.

I believe the UFC has Lesnar or any other champ basically contractually locked down while they are champ. They learned from the past when champs have left or wanted to leave. Anyway, how is one less company putting on PPVs really good bargaining position for Brock? Yeah, he could go do a PPV for someone else for millions, but that company will probably just fail like the rest that are throwing millions at fighters. UFC is doing an excellent job in keeping costs under control and bringing up the share that the fighters make. I don't think they are afraid to pay millions if they can afford to pay millions.

Strikeforce also lost Werdum/Overeem so that card is now looking like complete garbage.

Affliction has a pretty liberal agreement with the fighters. It may not be impossible for the other fights to be on Strikeforce.

They may not have. Either they have to put on another card, lend these fighters out, or pay them.

Bloody Elbow says UFC 100 did 1.5 million PPV buys

I am not sure they are saving money by not putting on the show, I don't think anyone can know how many buys they would have gotten anyway.

This MUST be a level. How is Affliction responsible for the #2 fighter in the division being a doper??? All they can be expected to do is put on fights with the best fighters available. I could not be more thrilled with the way that Affliction has done business. I am frankly shocked and amazed that the buys have not been FAR larger than they have been. It sure shows how unsophisticated the USA market is about MMA.

When Lesnar did his antics after the Mir fight and Dan took him out behind the woodshed it should have been clear there. What is Dana going to do...void the contract if he doesn't act right? Dana needs Lesnar more than Lesnar needs Dana actually. Lesnar can get several smaller paydays at the UFC, or a HUGE one with Fedor, and if he wins or even does really well, then Dana MUST take him back and pay him more than he was getting at that point anyway. So, he could get a few smaller paydays. Everyone knows Fedor is the class of the Division, it might even endear Lesnar to the fans more for taking the fight.
The UFC is doing a great job of artificially keeping fighter wages low. They even want all the likeness rights and all that kind of stuff. There is no way that the UFC has been helping anything but the UFC. They want the sport to go more public, mainstream, that is true. But the more marketshare they have the less they must pay fighters.

Just saw this picture on Sherdog....not sure if it's been posted in here before but I think it's pretty funny:

Way to kick Atencio while he's down!

A week ago August looked like potentially the most epic, loaded month in MMA history. Now the steam is really out of the sails but it's still an extremely good month. One of the best ever for sure.

Major events:
WVR: Sengoku 9
UFC 101
WEC 42
Strikeforce
UFC 102

Title fights:
Satoru Kitaoka vs. Mizuto Hirota
BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian
Miguel Torres vs. Brian Bowles
Cyborg vs. Carano
Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson
Nick Diaz vs. ?? (maybe)

So 5 majors + 5-6 title fights is still ridiculous despite everything we've lost so far. Oh yeah and Forrest/Silva, Randy/Nog, Maia/Marq, etc. What a crazy month.

Sorry I did not perceive the meme -aments meant that you didn't mean it. I can be a little literal at times. Picardfacepalm. jpeg

yeah guys **** this ****, lets just get pumped for the rest of the month imo

- Randy Couture (16-9) -200 vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-5-1) +160

can anyone enlighten me how often fighters lie about having a "staph infection" as an excuse that they lost a fight? if the answer is "not often", id jump all over nig nog here

You know Dana White is doing an extra line of blow off a hooker's ass in celebration today.
07-24-2009 , 02:11 PM
eh it's not all that bad because, even though August is a little bit less loaded, the fights that we're missing out on will just get pushed up a bit.

Randy has always been prone to submissions imo. I think we can expect this to look similar to most of Nog's fights where he takes a beating and then eventually pulls off an armbar. Although is Randy is smart (and he is) he will just keep it standing.

Really wanted to see Santiago/Belfort. I'm new to the MMA scene and heard that this fight, moreso than the Fedor fight, would be the real highlight of the show.
07-24-2009 , 02:52 PM
Err no, definitely Fedor vs Barnett was the highlight. Although Belfort/Santiago was the second best fight on the card.
07-24-2009 , 03:52 PM
Wow. Hell of a thing to wake up to and read. I was thinking it would go down like this. Smart move by Affliction from a cost perspective.
