I like the washes on boot-cut jeans better, because I feel like almost all of the dark jeans I like are boot-cut. Is there a ballpark leg opening width I should stay below if I just want to wear normal shoes?

Choosing a boot-cut because you like the wash is like choosing an entree because you like the garnish. Maybe you just need to look around more so you have a better selection. Jeans come in all kinds of washes and different cuts. The width on the opening is relative to your size, but you should be able to eyeball it. Just get what looks good to you.

KLJ - Ideal hem width is proportionate to the size of the waist. With jeans, I stick to 7.75"-8.25" hems as a size 32. I could probably go to 8.5" in a straight leg or bootcut jean.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't generally change what shoe I'm wearing if I'm wearing a boot-cut jean. It doesn't seem to be a problem. It's not like they're bell-bottoms.

Bootcut jeans and slim shoes like Converse sneakers look bad imo.

With today being the first day of spring I am looking to get some new shorts, I have been updating my wardrobe a lot over the past few months (mostly stuff from Express) and was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to get quality shorts for less than $50 a pair that Express charges.

Yeah, that's probably true. I may not be a good example, since I have huge feet. Size 14 and super wide, so I can't wear narrow shoes anyway.

I'm looking for a nice pair of shoes/loafers that can be worn with jeans. Here are a few pairs I like. Do you think these are too casual for jeans, and what are your overall impressions? $500 is my limit and would appreciate any other suggestions.

#1 & 2 I hate the sole. #3 looks too much like a slipper. #4 is too dressy for jeans IMO, and I would stay away from Cole Haan. Gilt (see my above posts) had a Cole Haan sale last week where I think you could have gotten that loafer for $80 or something. I reluctantly got a pair of CH sneakers because they were only $50 and they look really great. But CH has a very poor reputation for construction. If you have a $300+ budget, you can get some really sweet shoes.

Hi, I don't know much about fashion(or anything else) but I'd like to look good.

So I put on some weight, slowly shedding the pounds but in the meantime my jeans don't really fit.

I used to be fine in a slim/straight 32 and now I'm more of a relaxed 33 or straight 34 type of guy it seems. I went shopping today and man, Neiman Marcus makes me feel like George Costanza.(I'm 5'11 170lbs with zero muscle mass)

So I bought some stuff and I was wondering if it's going to look silly when/if I get back to my target weight of 15X.

I tried on a bunch of stuff and it's weird because stuff like a 34 the waist is clearly loose and a bit much but it fits perfectly on my thighs and ass. I'm half-Hispanic half-Russian so I guess huge thighs/ass is just inevitable. damn you lucky western euros!

Also is being a 32/30 or I guess a 34/30 standard? This is what made me feel like I'm really overweight. Everything was crazy long on me. I know that's sort of the look(or at least I got that feeling looking at Acne's website) but I don't really prefer it. I also wear my jeans super-low fwiw, dangerously close to hairlines.

Trying shorts was the same thing, I'm a 34" ass and a 33" waist, no big deal but I have a feeling losing weight is going to be all from that area so I hope these clothes don't look silly on me.

I grabbed these shirts because I thought they looked neat and they're paper thin which should be nice for the heat.

Are these socks too long for shorts? You guys don't really have to like shorts, that's the opinion I got in OOT, it's fine. I live in Arizona, it gets to 110 degrees in the summer, I'm wearing shorts.

Should I switch the shirts around when I wear these shorts? Would I be better off with plain white crewneck t-shirts? I grabbed some of those as well.

I get the feeling I'm going to be humiliated for this post. Oh wellllllllllll!

I'm going to defer on the jeans question because I don't own any loafers and I'm just not sure how they look with jeans in general. I would guess that it depends on the jeans and the shirt/jacket. But if you are dead set on loafers, go with the Quoddys and you are off to a great start.

As for that other pair, it's the same deal. The sole looks cheap to me. Maybe it's just me. Although, that sole does give the shoe a more casual look so that may actually work to your advantage if you're wearing them with jeans. I don't know, the Quoddys are 1/2 the price so it seems like a no-brainer.

Whatever you get, you should post pics when you get them. This thread could use some more pics.

Bootcut is just not "in" anymore to be honest. Maybe at places like the gap, abercombie, etc it is but if you look at lookbook.nu or http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/ it's pretty obvious that this isn't 2004. I prefer a skinny jean myself, I wear these everyday. By everyday I mean everyday. They start out dark and stiff but eventually break in and have natural fades. Obviously these are too tight for most people. Levis makes slim jeans in several fits, I just prefer the super skinnys.

There is also a "raw" denim thread in this forum that covers what you're trying to say about the whole "hipster" thing. I'm not going to name any names since I'll likely forget someone who is super knowledgeable and feel bad... But the thread has a wealth of information in it about raw denim with corresponding links to much more gheymo boards, full of wee men. (Nudie makes a line of jeans called Regular Alf, which is a remake of their old Regular Ralf line. This is a very popular style for any line of raw denim. They're boot cut. And not like a little namby pamby boot cut, but a full on man sized boot cut.)

I wouldn't wear loafers with jeans ever. Atleast not shiny penny/tassel loafers. Though I abhor those shoes in general. I wear monk straps or some chocolate laceups depending on how much I want to dress up/what else I'm wearing. I'm a big fan of the monk straps in a brown for a dress casual shoe. You can take them either way with great ease.

Keep in mind that the shinier the shoe, the dressier it is. (General rule caveat.)

Drivers are very stylish. They're just... not my thing. If I was an elderly Italian man, I'd have a full collection of ascots/scarves/driving shoes. But I'm not, so I don't.

I have a similar shoe though its a darker brown with a matte finish instead of that creepy gloss look. You might want to root around and see what else you can find in that look. In general I'd just stay away from anything that looks 1) dressy 2) what someone's dad would wear.
