Kirby,

1) relax. Don't think "kill", think "touch". Rookies throw their bodies into the punch thinking it means power. Nah, speed is power. Accuracy is power. Reaching back for that little extra is going to rob you of both.

2) keep your hands up!! You're showing your punches too early and leaving yourself wide open. Focus on throwing them off your chin, and go slow enough (at first) that you can focus on holding your right hand by your cheek and your left hand just in front of your chin.

3) The bag should NOT be weighted down. Use the movement of the bag to adjust the force of your punches (too hard and the bag will get away) and work on your footwork. Move with the bag, when it goes away, close the distance, when it comes at you either throw a stiff jab or straight right to stop it in its tracks or pivot out of the way.

Cool stuff, good luck in training.

cool thanks for the tips.

I need to tuck my chin and keep my hands higher/bring them back faster and all that good stuff is on my to-do list.

Also probably lower stance in general, and I hear exhaling on every frickin punch is supposed to be the norm. That is hard to actually remember and do

I feel like this could all be pointed back to him stupidly fighting Masvidal 1 month after a brutal war with Brown where he got rocked silly and took a huge amount of damage.

It's possible he could go back down to LW and do well, but if his chin is done he's toast as he's always been very hittable even with his new improvements. He just had a granite chin to rely on.
10-22-2017 , 05:22 PM
Chin might still be okay against most LW's power.

had an earlier 3rd bag day than expected, with new normal longass handwraps. Went pretty well.

I was wondering if maybe I should buy gloves that are bigger than 12oz for practice? Most places seem to advise 12 to 16 (and as big as possible for heavy bag), especially for beginners. I dont really mind shelling more $ on different gloves

Keep faith Kirby, even though you're only starting you're only marginally worse than Chael!

Kirby,

1. Slow down. Your jab in a 1-2 is supposed to setup the 2, not immediately follow behind it with no regard for anything else. You might land one of those quick 1-2 body shot combos on me once before I just throw a hard straight 2 at you immediately after your job and KNOCK YOUR BLOODY BLOCK OFF! But for real, break up your rhythm like you're actually sparring. Throw staggered 1, 1-2 combos as well.

2. You're throwing way too low, almost near your hip sometimes. Your lead hand is curled into your chest as you throw overhands.

3. You drop your lead as you throw your power shot way too often. The way I like to describe the sequence of a combo to newer people is like your hands are on kind of on pulley system together. When your jab reaches full extension, the pulley is activated, and when it's returning to guard, your 2 extends simultaneously (along with your hips shifting for power).

4. Keep your chin down. It's preference, but I like to protect my chin with my lead shoulder. Like if someone throws an overhand or a head kick, I can block like I"m answering a telephone and also flex my left shoulder to protect the chin.

5. Focus on your weight control and balance when throwing punches. None of your punches would have any power (which is secondary to good technique so don't try and throw harder, I'm just pointing it out) with you standing straight up. Learning to sit down on your punches is important.

6. Work in some basic head movement as well. Not prancing around shaking your head like a lunatic, but visualize an opponent throwing jabs and you slipping to the outside slightly. Also for slipping, you're not leaning over at all. As Chubbs would say, "It's all in the hips. Yeah, it's alll innn the hiipps!" You'll lower yourself slightly while shifting your hips slightly and turning your head. It's fine if you're grazed a bit by a boxing glove.

7. Relax your damn shoulders. They must kill you after a round.

All in all, not horrible at all for a beginner. Very good actually.

Shortly following the formation of White Rex in 2008, Hoelzer Reich, another highly controversial clothing company known for propagating extremist symbols like the White Cross began to sponsor UFC fighters. In 2009, BloodyElbow’s Brent Brookhouse reported that UFC fighter Joe Brammer would be sponsored by the far-right brand. The brand has also sponsored Westwall, a neo-Nazi metal band helmed by the former leader of the skinhead group Northern Hammerskins, and fighters with neo-Nazi tattoos such as Niko Puhakka. However, fighters like Donald Cerrone and Lyle Beerbohm have also received sponsorship from Hoelzer Reich.

care to re-think that statement, or nah?

Phresh, thanks

It's so much to think about while actually punching its kinda mindboggling before I can just passively do something correctly, theres lierally nothing that comes natural to me yet, lol.

To-do list to improve on bag: better stance, add head movement, more foot movement, target punches on the glove correctly (pinkies still hurt **** me -.-), target higher on the bag overall, start exhaling on every punch, better hips/heel turning, better balance during "combos", retract hands faster, tuck in the chin a lot more, keep hands high and not drop during combos, shoulders more "loose"?
