You may like sunshine superman as well. It's not as good as meru (which was the best I've seen in years I think), but it's pretty good about the pioneers of base jumping.

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief. (2015)
Interesting documentary on the founded on black magic cult Scientology with many former members (including a surprisingly hilarious Jason Beghe) giving the low down on what a creepy insidious bunch of weirdos run the cult. Recommended.

Thought Crimes: The Case of the Cannibal Cop.
Another absorbing doco on Gilberto Valle who was convicted of conspiring to kidnap and eat women before having his conviction overturned on appeal, which the prosecution claims they'll further appeal.
While the doc is fair and Valle himself comes across as surprisingly personable, I get the impression he has the capacity to be extraordinarily dangerous.
Also recommended.

In short, the documentary is about an NYPD officer who had extensive discussions on a fetish website about his plans to kidnap and eat various women. He was prosecuted for conspiracy to commit kidnapping and the central question of the documentary concerns the gray area between thoughts and actions. In legal terms, the question is what constitutes an overt act in furtherance of a conspiracy.

Guilty or innocent, there is no question that this guy's behavior was super creepy.
.
Just recently watched it and seconded.

Meru sounds great. I'm really interested in those high altitude climbs, and plan on going to Nepal sometime in the near future (not to climb).

I've also only just read Into Thin Air by Krakauer, which was brilliant.

I watched it last year. It's ok but nothing close to Meru. It also feels uncomfortable since I know a lot more about it than climbing and it clearly falls into my "obviously not worth it " category wrt risk since it's 2 orders of magnitude more dangerous than skydiving and it's a shame so many participants are terrible at realizing what the true fatality rates imply. I mean it might be the same with extreme climbing but it didn't bother me as I don't know the death rates.

Obviously that's not the point, carpe diem etc.

Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau was great. What a cool life he led. Got a tad dusty in my house.

Watched it last night - incredible. I could watch climbing and mountaineering videos all day. I am a climber at heart. Unfortunately I'm 47 and on the complete wrong end of strength/weight ratio. So I'll have to be content to enjoy them vicariously.

Well be glad you don't gotta climb Meru huh? ;-)

Those shots of them hacking their way up a 70-80 degree slope of fluted ice and snow is the stuff of my nightmares.

Watched Meru over the weekend. The free climbing shots of Renan and the back country skiing were just as terrifying as the climb, imo. Those guys are just wired a completely different way than I am. The movie lived up to the hype and then some.

Just watched Dawg Fight, about backyard fighting in Miami. It was really well done (done by the same director as Cocaine Cowboys) , but I don't really care about fighting much.

The 'star' is Dada 5000, who recently almost got killed in a fight with Kimbo, and he comes across as a pretty good guy.

So real it almost seems fake.

Sorry I'm not sure how to embed Vimeos. It's only a short one and well worth the click.

Did anyone see only the dead (documentary about Iraq war) on HBO last night? been waiting to watch it for a while, and just wanted to know if any good.

Just watched it. Pretty intense footage. Some quite graphic/disturbing scenes including watching people slowly die from mortal gun shot wounds. Not a ton in the form of background. Felt like they could have made it a bit longer to include some information for those not entirely familiar with the historical aspect.

I also watched Baghdad ER, also on HBO. The footage was also extremely graphic, most of which was from the military trauma hospital. Ton of insight from the surgeons and nurses confronted with IED and gunshot trauma on a daily basis.

Yeah, I managed to watch it myself yesterday, and agree with you. I was hoping for more info on Al-Zarqawi.

Iraq seemed like a totally insane place around that time, 2004-2006 with Zarqawi running about trying to behead everyone, not that it seems great today obviously.

Think I'll check that Baghdad ER out.

Good youtube documentary channels anyone?
The more mindblowness the better

I've exhausted the Vice channel and there hasn't really been anything that good on there in a while.
